Thoracic Nerve Root Schwannoma Filling the Spinal Canal Almost Entirely Without any Neurological Deficits.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tumours may be classified in three groups: 1) extradural, 2) intradural extramedullary and 3) intramedullary spinal cord tumours. Intradural extramedullary tumours arise from the leptomeninges or nerve roots and include schwannomas. A schwannoma is usually a firm grey-whitish tumour growing near a nerve trunk or ramus. It can be separated from the nerve without damaging neural tissue. Schwannomas are usually solitary tumours. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 37-year-old male who underwent surgery for a tumour in the upper thoracic segment of the spinal canal. A…

Lumbar vertebral hemangioma mimicking lateral spinal canal stenosis: case report and review of literature.

Context Hemangiomas are the commonest benign tumors of the spine. Most occur in the thoracolumbar spine and the majority are asymptomatic. Rarely, hemangiomas cause symptoms through epidural expansion of the involved vertebra, resulting in spinal canal stenosis, spontaneous epidural hemorrhage, and pathological burst fracture. Findings We report a rare case of a 73-year-old woman, who had been treated for two months for degenerative neurogenic claudication. On admission, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomographic scans revealed a hemangioma of the third lumbar vertebra protruding to t…

Visual and quantitative assessment of lateral lumbar spinal canal stenosis with magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Lateral lumbar spinal canal stenosis is a common etiology of lumbar radicular symptoms. Quantitative measurements have commonly demonstrated better repeatability than visual assessments. We are not aware of any studies examining the repeatability of quantitative assessment of the lateral canal. PURPOSE: To evaluate the repeatability of visual assessments and newly developed quantitative measurements of lateral lumbar spinal canal stenosis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with lateral lumbar spinal canal stenosis or prior spinal s…

Thoracolumbar burst fractures: correlation between post-traumatic spinal canal stenosis and initial neurological deficit.

Forty five patients (27 males and 18 females) aged 18 to 62 years, with thoracolumbar burst fracture treated between 1980 to 1994 were studied retrospectively. The purpose of the study was the identification of the existing correlation between the posttraumatic spinal canal stenosis and the initial neurological deficit. The presence of Dall and Stauffer type II fracture statistically constitutes an important factor, with negative involvement, in the diagnosis of the initial neurological status. In thoracolumbar spine, there is an inversely proportional relation with statistical importance betw…

Posterolateral approach and anterior spinal canal recalibration in severe spinal injury affecting T-12, L-1: a study of seven cases.

The authors present seven cases of spinal trauma at the T-12--L-1 level with severe spinal canal stenosis secondary to compressive, anterior discocorporeal lesions. Associated neurological disorders were of varying severity. Six cases were investigated by computed tomography, which enabled the degree of thoracolumbar spinal canal stenosis to be determined. In all cases, the surgical procedure involved rectification of spinal deformity, with an initial unilateral posterolateral approach permitting anterior spinal canal recalibration, either by impaction of protrusive fragments or ablation of ej…

Lateral congenital dermal sinuses extending into the spinal canal: case report and review of the literature.

Lateral congenital dermal sinus (CDS) typically blind-ends in the bone or soft tissue; meanwhile, medial CDS extends into the spinal canal through the spina bifida embryologically. We report the first case of lateral CDS extending into the spinal canal laterally without passing through the spina bifida. A 9-month-old infant presented with infected CDS refractory to partial sinus removal with a combination of surgical drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Eventually, a complete residual sinus removal was performed. Intraoperative findings revealed that the sinus extended into the spinal canal t…
