Congenital spinal cord anomalies: a pictorial review.

Development of spinal canal and its contents occurs in a much regulated fashion. Aberration at any stage of development namely gastrulation, primary neurulation, secondary neurulation, and retrogressive differentiation can result in a specific abnormality. Spinal cord anomalies or spinal dysraphism is a heterogeneous group containing some entities that are obvious at birth and many that are discovered only after imaging for neurological symptoms or signs. Congenital spinal tumors are closely related and present either as an external mass or imaging abnormalities. Radiological imaging plays a c

[Clinical applications of somatosensory evoked potentials for cervical cord lesions].

Measurement of interpeak latencies and evaluation of peak forms with added measurement of Nll besides N9, N13 and N20 and with utilization of normal standard values of interpeak latencies in 20 healthy persons proved to be useful for diagnosing the level responsible for neurological manifestations in cases with multiple cervical cord compressions, in such cases as multiple sclerosis without mechanical compression and also for differential diagnosis of incipient motor neuron disease from cervical spondylosis with muscle atrophy. It also proved that elongation of the interpeak latencies between

Surgical Treatment of Metastatic Disease of the Vertebral Column.

Spinal metastatic disease is a rather common occurrence and definitely warrants attention and treatment due to the high likelihood of leaving cancer patients severely disabled in their final months of life. Recent developments in the understanding of the behavior of different tumor types, as well as advances in surgical treatment, are allowing for the evolution of treatment algorithms, especially when surgical treatment is to be considered. This paper gives an overview of the decision-making process and the array of surgical options currently available.

Lipomatous lumbar mass with an attached digit and associated split cord malformation.

BACKGROUND: A male infant was born with a digit attached to a skin-covered lumbar lipomatous mass and an underlying split cord malformation. METHODS: Surgical removal of the mass was performed at four months-of-age. By this time the digit had grown a nail and imaging and histology showed ongoing development of articulated phalanges. RESULTS: The lipomatous mass contained a long bone, a clavicle- and scapula-like structure and a variety of other mature germ layer derivatives. These features raised a number of diagnostic considerations, including: mature teratoma, hamartoma, rudimentary parasi

De novo development of a cavernous malformation of the spinal cord following spinal axis radiation. Case report.

Analysis of recent reports has suggested that cavernous malformations (CMs) of the brain may have an acquired pathogenesis and a dynamic pathophysiological composition, with documented appearance of new lesions in familial cases and following radiotherapy. The authors report the first case of demonstrated de novo formation of an intramedullary CM following spinal radiation therapy. A 17 year-old boy presented with diabetes insipidus and delayed puberty. Evaluation of endocrine levels revealed hypopituitarism, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated an infundibular mass. The patient un

Sacral lipoma of the filum terminale with dural arteriovenous fistula. Case report.

A patient presenting with progressive paraparesis was found to have a dural sacral arteriovenous (AV) fistula. His condition deteriorated abruptly after thoracolumbar angiography. Embolization of the fistula improved the patient's status so that he was able to walk with crutches. One year later his neurological condition worsened. He was treated via an enlarged laminectomy because of uncertainty concerning a lipoma noted on the initial computerized tomography scan. The lesion consisted of an intradural filum terminale lipoma associated with an AV fistula, both of which were excised. The patien

Rapid arteriovenous shunting in a spinal cord ependymoma. Case report.

A case of ependymoma of the conus medullaris and cauda equina is described in which spinal angiography demonstrated rapid arteriovenous shunting, an angiographic sign which is typical of arteriovenous malformations and which has not been previously reported to occur with ependymomas.
