[Scoliosis: review of types, aetiology, diagnostics, and treatment 1].

A scoliosis is a flexible or rigid deformity of the spine in the frontal plane. There are several types of scoliosis, each with specific characteristics. The most prevalent types are idiopathic, congenital, and neuromuscular scoliosis and scoliosis in adults. The aetiology is varied and largely undetermined. Essential components of diagnostics are patient history, physical examination, and radiographs. Treatment options are a conservative approach involving observation and follow-up, a conservative approach involving non-surgical treatment, and surgical treatment. Usually, idiopathic scoliosis

Virtual autopsy to assess sacral anatomy: Conditions for a minimal invasive approach to the spinal canal through the hiatus sacralis.

BACKGROUND: Despite multiple advantages of minimally invasive techniques in spinal surgery, the currently used approaches may lead to postoperative pain and spinal instability. As a natural orifice, the hiatus sacralis offers a nontransmuscular alternative entry point for endoscopic approaches. In this study, we collected data about the complex anatomical conditions of the sacral canal as a basis for the development of a sacral endoscope. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 192 postmortem human cadaveric specimens with computed tomography (CT). The anatomical conditions of the sacrum and lu

A new skin-surface device for measuring the curvature and global and segmental ranges of motion of the spine: reliability of measurements and comparison with data reviewed from the literature.

There is an increasing awareness of the risks and dangers of exposure to radiation associated with repeated radiographic assessment of spinal curvature and spinal movements. As such, attempts are continuously being made to develop skin-surface devices for use in examining the progression and response to treatment of various spinal disorders. However, the reliability and validity of measurements recorded with such devices must be established before they can be recommended for use in the research or clinical environment. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability of measurements using

Congenital and acquired orthopedic abnormalities in patients with myelomeningocele.

This article presents a radiologic review of the spectrum of acquired and congenital orthopedic abnormalities found in patients with myelomeningocele. These abnormalities are caused predominantly by muscle imbalance, paralysis, and decreased sensation in the lower extremity. Iatrogenic injury, such as a postoperative tethered cord, may also cause bone abnormalities. Selected images were obtained from more than 800 children. Important entities presented include spinal curvatures such as kyphosis, scoliosis, and lordosis; subluxation and dislocation of the hip, coxa valga, contractures of the hi…

A new method for measuring penile curvature based on digital images.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate and objective assessment of penile curvature is considered a critical evaluation in patients with hypospadias, as it often determines if a 1 or 2-stage procedure should be done. Due to the ease of acquisition and reusability of digital images, more research is focused on digital images; however, the current method based on digital images is not an easily accurate and objective evaluation of penile curvature amongst surgeons. In scoliosis, the Cobb method is a standard method to quantify spinal curvature. Therefore, this study introduces a new accurate, and

Enlargement of the "cone of economy" as a biomarker of decompensation in unbalanced adult spinal deformity patients.

PURPOSE: Dubousset et al. proposed that the "cone of economy" (COE) in the inverted pendulum model of human standing increases in size significantly in patients with balance impairment. The clinical significance of COE size measured by motion capture as a postural sway index in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients remains unclear. METHODS: Twenty-three patients undergoing ASD surgery in a single institution as well as five healthy male participants were enrolled. The motion-capture of the surface reflection markers above the C7 and S1 spinous processes was performed using infrared cameras, a

Classification of arm swing as a clinical marker of advancing spinal deformity among community-dwelling female volunteers 60 years or older.

The clinical characteristics of adult spinal deformity (ASD) include worsening of deformity during gait, which leads to unstable posture and propensity to fall. The purpose of this study was to classify arm swing and to analyse its clinical implications. Clinical and radiographic evaluations were performed with 168 community-dwelling female volunteers recruited from a population register in Hokkaido, Japan, with a mean age of 67.3 ± 4.7 years, and arm swing was classified into four groups according to maximum forward and backward arm swing distance: (1) predominantly forward swing with forward

Principal Radiographic Characteristics for Cervical Spinal Deformity: A Health-related Quality-of-life Analysis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to propose radiographic characteristics of patients with cervical disability and to investigate the relevant parameters when assessing cervical alignment. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although cervical kyphosis is traditionally recognized as presentation of cervical deformity, an increasing number of studies demonstrated that cervical kyphosis may not equal cervical deformity. Therefore, several other differentiating criteria for cervical deformity should be investigated and supported with quality of life scores. METHODS

The adult scoliosis.

Adult scoliosis is defined as a spinal deformity in a skeletally mature patient with a Cobb angle of more than 10 degrees in the coronal plain. Adult scoliosis can be separated into four major groups: Type 1: Primary degenerative scoliosis, mostly on the basis of a disc and/or facet joint arthritis, affecting those structures asymmetrically with predominantly back pain symptoms, often accompanied either by signs of spinal stenosis (central as well as lateral stenosis) or without. These curves are often classified as "de novo" scoliosis. Type 2: Idiopathic adolescent scoliosis of the thoracic a

Efficacy of conservative treatment on exacerbation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Scoliosis is defined as a deviation from the normal vertical line of the spine and consists of a lateral curvature in which the spine rotates within the curvature. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of scoliosis and the cause is unknown. In this study, it was investigated whether conservative treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (CONTRAIS) reduced the patient's Cobb angle, and the effect of CONTRAIS according to the severity of idiopathic scoliosis and the efficacy of CONTRAIS by spinal region were also verified. Idiopathic scoliosis patients with a Cobb ang

Plating of thoracic, thoracolumbar, and lumbar injuries with pedicle screw plates.

This article describes a technique of plating thoracic, thoracolumbar, and lumbar injuries with pedicle screw plates. The shape of the plates is premolded to the spine curvature. The strength of the pedicles where the screws are implanted explains the good results of reduction and stabilization. This technique allows the surgeon either to reduce and fix a spinal fracture or to perform large approaches and extensive procedures when necessary.
