Traumatic rupture of splenic tissue 13 years after splenectomy. A case report.

After splenectomy, two types of splenic tissue can remain in the human body: one type is the congenital accessory spleen, with its own vasculature and capsule. The other type is the acquired splenosis, caused by the spread of splenic tissue following splenic injury. The aim of this paper is to briefly review the literature dealing with spontaneous bleeding of splenic tissue, apart from the primary spleen, and to report a case showing the clinical and surgical importance of remaining splenic tissue after splenectomy.

Metastatic choriocarcinoma with spontaneous splenic rupture following term pregnancy: a case report.

Choriocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm which often spreads extensively. The metastases sometimes appear in the abdominal cavity where they can cause dramatic symptoms. We here describe a patient who had received a cesarean section twelve days before and intraperitoneal hemorrhage was diagnosed when she visited Chang Gung Memorial Hospital's emergency department. At laparotomy, ruptured spleen with active bleeding was found and splenectomy was performed. The histopathologic study revealed a metastatic choriocarcinoma. Multiagent chemotherapy was administrated and the patient responded well. To our

[Spontaneous splenic rupture in infectious mononucleosis--organ-sparing operation using fibrin glue].

We present the case of a 16-year-old female patient with infectious mononucleosis complicated by spontaneous splenic rupture on the eighth day of the disease. This event is seldom; only 38 cases of true spontaneous rupture of the spleen in infectious mononucleosis could be found when the literature was reviewed. The diagnosis of splenic rupture in our case was made by ultrasound, just as the further postoperative follow-up. For the first time the splenic lesion was successfully managed by application of fibrin tissue adhesive.

Splenic Vein Pseudoaneurysm and Rupture Presenting as Maternal Collapse Postpartum: Case Report.

A multiparous woman at 27 weeks gestation presented with hemodynamic instability and nonreassuring fetal heart tones, prompting emergency cesarean delivery. Intraoperatively, hemoperitoneum was noted without pelvic source. Postoperatively, she deteriorated, necessitating exploratory laparotomy. A ruptured splenic vein pseudoaneurysm was identified and splenectomy was performed. Both mother and infant recovered and were discharged in stable condition. This case report illustrates a rare, life-threatening cause of intra-abdominal hemorrhage in pregnancy treated with surgical exploration, emphasi

Delayed splenic rupture 10 days following blunt abdominal trauma in a child.

Delayed splenic rupture is a rare but potentially fatal complication of traumatic splenic injury. Here, we report a fatal pediatric case of delayed splenic rupture 10 days following blunt abdominal trauma. Conservative management resulted in the resolution of symptoms and intra-abdominal hemorrhage. On day 8 of hospitalization, the patient was allowed to sit up in bed. Despite the favorable clinical progress, the patient died within an hour of being left unattended. Autopsy revealed a nearly healed splenic laceration with strict adhesion to adjacent organs; nonetheless, a rupture with a mixed …

Laparoscopic partial splenectomy for traumatic splenic rupture patients is safe and feasible.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic splenic rupture is a life-threatening acute abdominal condition. While traditional total splenectomy effectively controls bleeding, it results in the loss of splenic function, increasing the risk of infectious complications and long-term health issues. Laparoscopic partial splenectomy, as a minimally invasive spleen-preserving approach, offers a new treatment option for such patients. However, its technical complexity limits its clinical adoption, requiring further experience accumulation and technical optimization. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinic…

Atypical presentation of spontaneous splenic rupture secondary to Epstein-Barr virus infection.

We present a case of atraumatic splenic rupture secondary to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in a woman in her early 50s. The patient initially presented with sepsis secondary to pneumonia but then developed abdominal pain and distension. CT revealed splenic rupture with a significant perisplenic hematoma. Laboratory tests confirmed an EBV infection. Owing to frailty, she underwent fluoroscopy-guided splenic artery embolisation. This case highlights the rare risk of splenic rupture following EBV infection, even in the absence of typical symptoms of infectious mononucleosis.

Spontaneous Splenic Rupture Unveiled: A Non-traumatic Case Associated With Infective Endocarditis.

Spontaneous splenic rupture (SSR) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition often associated with trauma. However, SSR can occur without evident trauma, presenting unique diagnostic challenges. We present a case report of a 32-year-old postpartum female who experienced sudden-onset abdominal pain and was diagnosed with SSR. Despite the absence of trauma, she exhibited hypovolemic shock, requiring rapid intervention. Diagnostic imaging, including CT scans, revealed a substantial splenic laceration, which led to an emergent splenectomy. The patient's postoperative course was complicat…

Complement-Mediated Thrombotic Microangiopathy and Spontaneous Splenic Rupture Associated With Cytomegalovirus Infection.

This is a case report of a previously healthy female patient with complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) caused by a systemic cytomegalovirus infection that was successfully treated with plasmapheresis, steroids, and parenteral valganciclovir. Complement-mediated TMA is the result of various genetic mutations leading to complement abnormalities with overactivation of alternate complement pathway in response to a triggering infection. She also had splenic rupture without splenomegaly and was managed successfully without splenectomy.

Primary splenic angiosarcoma: a rare entity often associated with rupture and hemoperitoneum.

Primary splenic angiosarcoma (PSA) is a rare neoplasm of vascular origin associated with aggressive behavior and poor prognosis. The clinical presentation is usually non-specific and is mostly characterized by a wasting disease with anemia and splenomegaly, mimicking a wide range of entities. The authors present the case of an 80-year-old woman with cardiovascular comorbidities with a 6-month history of weight loss, fatigue, weakness, pallor, and abdominal pain. The physical examination showed massive splenomegaly and pallor. After a thorough evaluation that ruled out lymphoproliferative disea

Splenic rupture following colon polypectomy: a case report and review of literature.

Colonoscopy is a safe procedure performed routinely worldwide. Splenic rupture is a rare complication of colonoscopy with several reported cases since 1974. We report the first case of a complication in the Republic of Korea. The literature on this rare complication is also reviewed here, with focus on the analysis of risk, diagnosis, and treatment. A 77-year-old patient receiving oral aspirin underwent colonoscopy with polypectomy. After 24 hours, the patient experienced dizziness and hypotension. Colonoscopy was performed to exclude intestinal bleeding, which could be diagnosed with hemoperi…

Splenic rupture in infectious mononucleosis: A systematic review of published case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a common viral illness that predominantly causes sore throat, fever and cervical lymphadenopathy in adolescents and young adults. Although usually a benign, self-limiting disease, it is associated with a small risk of splenic rupture, which can be life-threatening. It is common practice therefore to advise avoiding vigorous physical activity for at least 4-6 weeks, however this is not based on controlled trials or national guidelines. We reviewed published case reports of splenic rupture occurring in the context of IM in an attempt to ascertain co…
