Osteochondrosis associated with copper deficiency in young farmed red deer and wapiti x red deer hybrids.

Osteochondrosis is reported in association with copper deficiency in young red deer and wapiti X red deer hybrids on eight deer farms throughout New Zealand. On two farms, more than 30% of fawns were affected. Affected animals were lame, often had one or more swollen joints, and in some cases had an abnormal "bunny-hopping" gait or "cow-hocked" stance. Lesions were most common in the carpal, tarsal, stifle and hip joints, and were usually bilateral. Defects in articular cartilage ranged from loose flaps to complete separation with exposure of subchondral bone and the presence of cartilage frag…

Concurrent Partial Avulsion of Popliteal and Long Digital Extensor Tendons in a Juvenile Dog.

A 5-month-old, 17.8 kg intact female Chesapeake Bay Retriever presented for the evaluation of left pelvic limb lameness following trauma. The dog had been persistently weight-bearing lame for 11 days after an abnormal landing. Radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasonography revealed a partial avulsion of the left long digital extensor and popliteal tendons, with associated bone marrow edema, mild synovial effusion, and a low-grade lateral collateral ligament sprain. This case represents the first documented instance of concurrent partial avulsion of both tendons confirmed by

The Role of Tibial Plateau Angle in Canine Cruciate Ligament Rupture-A Review of the Literature.

Cranial cruciate ligament disease is a common pathological condition in dogs that is often presented in daily clinical practice. Different risk factors for the development of this condition include breed, sex, age, bodyweight and neuter status, as well as different biological and biomechanical mechanisms. In the literature, special attention has been paid to the role of the tibial plateau angle in damage to the cranial cruciate ligament. Although the disease was first described at the beginning of last century, and since then different surgical methods have been developed to treat it, its aeti

Variation in the Quantity of Elastic Fibres with Degeneration in Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligaments from Labrador Retrievers.

Objectives This study aims to quantify numbers of elastic fibres in cranial cruciate ligaments from a dog breed at high risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease. Methods Macroscopically normal cranial cruciate ligaments were harvested from six Labrador retrievers. Sequential histological sections were assessed for extracellular matrix degeneration (haematoxylin and eosin stain) and elastic fibre staining (Miller's stain). Elastic fibres were semi-quantified using previously published scoring systems. Each section was scored twice by two observers. Results Increased numbers of elastic fibres w

Comparison of Collagen Graft Fixation Methods in the Porcine Knee: Implications for Matrix-Assisted Chondrocyte Implantation and Second-Generation Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the fixation integrity at time zero of a type I/III collagen patch secured to a chondral defect in the porcine knee using methods typically employed in autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) and matrix-assisted chondrocyte implantation. METHODS: Twenty-four porcine knee specimens underwent a medial parapatellar arthrotomy. A prefabricated template was used to create cartilage defects of 2 cm(2) in the medial femoral condyle. A size-matched collagen patch was fashioned. Four methods of fixation to the chondral defect were analyzed: group 1-saline, group 2-fibrin glue ar

Inhibiting Escherichia coli Growth by Optimized Low-Power Microwave Irradiation-Delivery of Ag and Au Nanoparticles.

In a ground-breaking recent study, we unveiled the remarkable cellular uptake of 60 nm ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles by NIH/3T3 mouse skin fibroblasts under microwave irradiation. Even more stimulating is our current demonstration of the potent ability of Ag nanoparticles (147 nm) and Au nanoparticles (120 nm) to stifle the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli-a prokaryote whose cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles), vastly smaller than the NIH/3T3 cells, when exposed to significantly optimized low-power microwave irradiation conditions. Our rigorous assessment o…

Comparison of perioperative serum osteocrin concentrations between surgical techniques in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common orthopedic disease in dogs that is usually managed with tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) or extracapsular lateral suture (ECLS). Osteotomy is generally associated with some complications, including nonunion. The periosteum plays an important role in bone growth and remodeling. Osteocrin (OSTN), which was recently identified and is involved in bone formation and differentiation, is produced in the periosteum and osteoblasts. The aimed to investigate whether the concentrations of serum OSTN change before and after stifle surgery in …

Inclusion, Sustainability, and Equity at the Heart of a 5.0 Society.

Our everyday reality is perceived as more complex, unpredictable, and filled with barriers created by not-so-evident factors that can stifle thought, reflection, and the desire and energy to act. All of this intertwines with the reduction of physical and psychological well-being for many people, encouraging the presence and escalation of situations of vulnerability which are rapidly increasing nowadays. In addition to the more traditional and known ones, such as vulnerabilities connected to the presence of disabilities or diseases, today other forms of vulnerabilities are strongly emerging, su…

Spinal spondylosis and acute intervertebral disc prolapse in a European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos).

A 22-year-old male European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) was presented to the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital after an acute onset of hind limb paralysis 4 days earlier. Previous radiographs revealed marked degenerative joint disease of the stifles, tarsi and digits. The clinical findings were consistent with acute disc prolapse. Lateral radiographs of the entire vertebral column were made as well as ventrodorsal pelvic radiographs. The latter were within normal limits. The vertebral column revealed multiple lesions consistent with chronic and acute disc herniations. Lateral com…

Evaluation of vertical forces in the pads of Pitbulls with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) is one of the most important stifle injuries and a common cause of lameness in dogs. Our objective was to measure the vertical forces in the pads of Pitbulls with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) using a pressure sensitive walkway. A pressure sensitive walkway was used to collect vertical force data from the pads of 10 Pitbulls affected with unilateral CCLR. Ten healthy Pitbulls were included in the study as controls. Velocity varied between 1.3 and 1.6 m/s and acceleration was kept below ± 0.1 m/s2. Differences between groups and be…

The role of muscle activation in cruciate disease.

Traditional investigations into the etiopathogenesis of canine cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease have focused primarily on the biological and mechanical insults to the CCL as a passive stabilizing structure of the stifle. However, with recent collaboration between veterinarians and physical therapists, an increased focus on the role of muscle activity and aberrant motor control mechanisms associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and rehabilitation in people has been transferred and applied to dogs with CCL disease. Motor control mechanisms in both intact and cruciate-def…
