High intakes of microfilariae of a Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus by Simulium metallicum proved lethal to a considerable proportion of the flies within 24 hours of taking an infecting blood-meal. The gross histopathological changes resulting from infection were compared in groups of moribund and of apparently healthy flies during this period. The marked morbidity of the flies could be related to certain events occurring in the alimentary tract and haemocoele of the fly soon after ingestion of the parasitized blood. Paraesophageal hernias are uncommon conditions which appear mainly in elderly people, frequently associated with sliding hernias or gastric volvulus. The migration and fate of microfilariae of a Guatemalan strain of Onchocerca volvulus in Simulium ochraceum and S. metallicum was studied. The anatomical distribution of microfilariae at various times after ingestion was recorded from a study of histological sections of the flies. PURPOSE: Neonatal gastric volvulus (GV) is a rare clinical entity with a challenging diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to identify clinical and radiological findings to aid in early diagnosis in neonatal GV.

In this study single-port percutaneous laparoscopic gastropexy in dogs using barbed suture material in combination with ovariectomy is described. A single port preventive gastropexy was performed in 6 female German shepherds in combination with ovariectomy using a laparoscope. Surgery time, intraoperative, postoperative and follow up complications were recorded. In this study median surgery time in clinical cases was 73 minutes (range 66-79). The authors present the case report of a 13-year-old boy in whom organoaxial gastric volvulus developed four months after a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and placement of gastrostomy. During a six-month period five patients presented to The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children between the ages of three weeks and three years with recurrent vomiting and failure to thrive. All were diagnosed as having organoaxial malrotation of the stomach by barium meal examination. Symptoms were refractory to conservative management but combined gastropexy and fundoplication was successful in all cases.

GV occurs when the stomach twists by more than 180º resulting in obstruction of the alimentary tract, visceral ischemia, necrosis, and perforation.
