Ericksonian hypnotherapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by persistent psychological distress and heightened neurophysiological reactivity. While trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an established treatment, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (EH) may offer comparable benefits via different therapeutic mechanisms. In this randomized clinical trial, 63 adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for PTSD were allocated (1:1:1) to EH, CBT, or a waitlist control; 54 participants completed post-treatment assessments. Both active interventions consisted of 12 weekly individual sessions. Outcomes included PT

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Propranolol in the Treatment of Patients with Anxiety and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Patients with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) require combined psychological and pharmacological treatment, but evidence on propranolol's efficacy in these conditions remains insufficient. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 211 eligible patients (after exclusion) with anxiety-related disorders or PTSD (per ICD-11 criteria) admitted to Ganzhou Third People's Hospital from January 2022 to December 2024. Patients were divided into the control group (conventional treatment, n = 105) and the experimental group (propranolol treatment, n = 106). Main outcomes included heart r

Electrophysiological Markers of Proactive and Reactive Cognitive Processing in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is associated with well-documented alterations in reactive brain processing of stimuli or events, whereas little is known about proactive/anticipatory neural dynamics preceding and preparing for task execution. This study aimed to investigate both proactive and reactive brain control of PTSD patients during a cognitive task, using the event-related potential (ERP) method. Methods: Twenty-one PTSD patients were matched to thirty healthy controls. Proactive ERP components, such as the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), prefrontal Negativity (pN), and v

Eye-tracking and cognitive patterns in post-traumatic stress disorder: a scoping review.

Background: PTSD is associated with alterations in attentional processing and executive control, particularly in response to threat-related or emotionally salient cues. Early research emphasised sustained hypervigilance, whereas recent evidence indicates that attentional biases in PTSD are dynamic, context-dependent, and may also involve avoidance. Eye-tracking, especially combined with neurophysiological measures, provides fine-grained indices of visual attention and oculomotor control. Objective: This scoping review synthesises empirical findings on attentional bias and cognitive control in P

Post-traumatic stress disorder: evolving conceptualization and evidence, and future research directions.

The understanding of responses to traumatic events has been greatly influenced by the introduction of the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this paper we review the initial versions of the diagnostic criteria for this condition and the associated epidemiological findings, including sociocultural differences. We consider evidence for post-traumatic reactions occurring in multiple contexts not previously defined as traumatic, and the implications that these observations have for the diagnosis. More recent developments such as the DSM-5 dissociative subtype and the ICD-11 dia

Excess costs of post-traumatic stress disorder related to child maltreatment in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) significantly increases the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for which the prevalence in Europe is higher than initially assumed. While the high economic burden of PTSD is well-documented, little is known about the health care cost differences between individuals with PTSD-CM and those without PTSD in Germany. This study aimed to determine the excess health care and absenteeism costs associated with PTSD-CM in Germany. METHODS: Baseline data from a multi-center randomized controlled trial on individuals with PTSD-CM (n = 361) wer

A narrative review of exercise intervention mechanisms for post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severely disrupts the daily lives of veterans and active duty personnel and may influence their suicidal behaviour. This study provides insight into existing research on PTSD in veterans through a narrative review. Exercise was found to reduce PTSD symptoms in veterans at both psychological and physiological levels, which in turn inhibits their suicidal tendencies. At the psychological level, exercise improved veterans' Subjective Well-Being and Psychological Well-Being, and at the physiological level, it improved veterans' brain structure, neuroendocrine

Mouse model of post-traumatic stress disorder negatively impacts cardiac homeostasis.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychological disorder characterized by chronic symptoms of intrusiveness, avoidance, and hyperarousal after a traumatic event. Retrospective studies have indicated PTSD increases the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) including arrhythmia, hypertension, and myocardial infarction. The goal of this study was to: 1) use a murine model of cued fear conditioning (inescapable foot shock, IFS) to develop a scoring method to distinguish a PTSD-like phenotype, and 2) use this model system to characterize the cardiac phenotype and function in mice

Implications of gene × environment interactions in post-traumatic stress disorder risk and treatment.

Exposure to traumatic stress is common in the general population. Variation in the brain's molecular encoding of stress potentially contributes to the heterogeneous clinical outcomes in response to traumatic experiences. For instance, only a minority of those exposed to trauma will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Risk for PTSD is at least partially heritable, with a growing number of genetic factors identified through GWAS. A major limitation of genetic studies is that they capture only the genetic component of risk, whereas PTSD by definition requires an environmental traumatic

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Transcendental Meditation for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background and Objectives. Our recent systematic review and meta-analysis of all studies on meditation as treatment for PTSD (61 studies) found a moderate effect size of Hedges's g = -0.67 for post-minus-pre change in symptom scores. Separate tests of the four meditation categories found a large effect size of g = -1.13 for the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique that is significantly greater than for each other category. The present follow-up used a different method, calculating effects relative to internal controls, to better characterize the effects of this meditation technique. Materi

Association between childhood polyvictimization, telomere length, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is related to adverse psychosocial outcomes and may be associated with telomere erosion. Longitudinal research on mental health problems and telomere length (TL) in victimized children in Asian societies is scarce. In this study, we evaluated the associations of childhood polyvictimization with TL and longitudinal psychological problems. METHODS: Subcohorts were obtained from a national, proportionately stratified sample of fourth-grade Taiwanese students recruited in 2014; the sample comprised 70 high-risk group participants (experience of polyvictimization) an

Proposing Bromo-Epi-Androsterone (BEA) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has traditionally been viewed as a psychiatric disorder of fear, memory, and emotional regulation. However, growing evidence implicates systemic and neuroinflammation as key contributors. Individuals with PTSD often exhibit elevated blood levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and C-reactive protein, indicating immune dysregulation. Dysfunctions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis marked by reduced cortisol levels impair the body's ability to regulate inflammation, allowing persistent immune activation. Circulating cy

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in Peruvian military: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has led us to stay at home in order to mitigate the increase in contagion, which has modified military personnel's work as they had to be on the front-line of the global fight. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that has become a challenge for public health. Little research has been undertaken in military population, even less in the Latin American context. The objective is determining the prevalence and factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder in military personnel in Lambayeque, Peru. METHODS: This is an analyti

Psychological Interventions for Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is characterized by the presence of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms combined with disturbances in self-organization. However, treatment strategies for this newly defined condition remain lacking. METHODS: In this systematic review of international studies exploring psychological interventions for CPTSD in children, adolescents, and adults, we screened PubMed and Google Scholar for relevant literature while adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Trauma-Triggered Psychotic Episodes in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a clinically complex condition, and its intrinsically intense emotional burden may, in some cases, be associated with trauma reactivation that precipitates transient psychotic symptoms, particularly in individuals exposed to chronic interpersonal trauma. Although psychosis is not part of PTSD diagnostic criteria, trauma-related psychotic experiences have been documented and may emerge in the context of hyperarousal, intrusive recollections, and perceived threat amplification. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman with PTSD following prolonged intim

Neurobiology of Chronic Pain, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVES: This article describes the neurobiology of psychological injuries-chronic pain, concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and fear/posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-toward elucidating common mechanisms in central and peripheral sensitization that contribute to their onset, exacerbation, and maintenance. Central sensitization refers to central nervous system (CNS) and related processes, while peripheral sensitization is typically referred to as receptor field expansion. The three psychological injury diagnoses/conditions are accompanied by impairments in function after negli
