Immunohistochemical and electronmicroscopic studies of obstructive lesions in submandibular glands.

Obstructive sialoadenitis was examined by immunohistochemical techniques for keratin (MoAb KL1, PKK1 and K8.12) and actin. Electronmicroscopy (EMS) was used to identify ultrastructural changes in myoepithelial cells and ductal basal cells. With immunohistochemistry, actin staining was used as a marker of myoepithelium, MoAbs KL1 and PKK1 for ductal luminal cells, and MoAb K8.12 for ductal basal cells. Histologic features of the lesion usually showed degenerative changes of acinar and duct cells with cell infiltration and fibrous replacement. Immunohistochemical findings indicated that actin st

Structural and cytochemical observations in the submandibular gland of unweaned cats.

An investigation by electron microscope was performed on the submandibular gland of unweaned cats for studying its morphology and carbohydrate histochemistry. The cytoarchitecture was comparable with that of adult animals with the exception of the degree of membrane merging in both demilunar and acinar cell secretory granules. Conversely, the submandibular gland of unweaned cats showed a peculiar HID-TCH-SP reactivity at acinar cell level.

The effect of submandibular gland removal on testicular and epididymal parameters.

The effect of sialoadenectomy (submandibular gland removal) for four weeks duration was studied in five C3H mice and four sham-operated controls. This preliminary experiment using small numbers of animals indicated that sperm production parameters were lowered in sialoadenectomized animals although there were no significant differences between the sialodenectomized and sham-operated group. In a second experiment using larger numbers of animals, significant differences in testicular weights, epididymal weights, and testis weights were noted. These parameters were reduced only 10-14% from contro…

Mechanism of action of calcitonin on secretion in rat submandibular gland.

Calcitonin (CT) was found to reduce the initial flow of pilocarpine-stimulated saliva from the submandibular glands in the rat. Although there was a concomitant increase of the concentration of calcium and protein in the saliva, the calcium/protein ratio was not significantly affected. CT also caused a significant increase of the potassium concentration in submandibular saliva. Both in vivo and in vitro, CT inhibited the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP) both in the absence and in the presence of forskolin. This decrease in intracellular cAMP levels could result in an inhibition of mucus secreti…

Hypertrophic and hyperplastic effects of thyroxine on the submandibular gland of the mouse.

The nature of the trophic response of the mouse submandibular gland to thyroxine (T4) was examined. Adult female Swiss-Webster mice were given daily subcutaneous injections of T4 (1 microgram/gm body weight) for two or four days; two injections of tritiated thymidine (3H-TdR) were given 24 and 29 hours after the last injection of hormone, and the mice were killed one hour after the last injection of 3H-TdR. One gland was analyzed chemically for DNA content and for incorporation of 3H-TdR, while the other was used to prepare autoradiograms. The cellular composition of each gland was analyzed by…

Morphometric study of the effects of insulin on the rat submandibular gland.

After administration of an overdose of insulin, the following effects on the rat submandibular gland were observed: increased gland weight and acinar cell size, with increased cytoplasmic acidophilia and a larger number of secretory granules. The granular ducts showed higher cells and increased nuclear volume. The above data were confirmed by morphometric techniques. The total protein values for the submandibular gland were higher in rats 30 and 60 minutes after insulin overdose, when compared with those for control rats. Administration of an overdose of insulin caused a lowering of the glycem…

[Parotid and submandibular gland aplasia with atresia of the lacrimal canaliculi].

A genesis of the large salivary glands is rare. Aetiology and pathogenesis of the non-formation of these glands is uncertain. On account of marked xerostomia this non-formation is of special significance for preventive dental measures.

Volume changes in the contralateral submandibular gland following unilateral gland excision in oral cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: The effects of unilateral submandibular gland excision on the size of the contralateral gland are not well understood, with no human studies reported to date. This study aims to investigate the impact of unilateral submandibular gland excision on the contralateral gland's size, providing insights into compensatory mechanisms and their clinical implications. METHOD: This retrospective study involved patients with oral cancer who underwent unilateral submandibular gland excision and ipsilateral neck dissection at Gangneung-Wonju National University Dental Hospital between 2008 and 2…

Age-Related Changes in the Submandibular Gland: An Imaging Study of Gland Ptosis Versus Volume.

BACKGROUND: Debate surrounding the morphological evolution of the submandibular gland (SMG) with aging, and the uncertain influence of patient demographics, has led to hesitancy about incorporating targeted interventions of the SMG into clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether SMG ptosis, hypertrophy, or both is the primary etiology behind the increase in submandibular volume with age. METHODS: MRI segmentation was used to calculate the total and inframandibular (IM) volume and height of the SMG. Adult subjects with previous MRIs of the head and neck were…

Submandibular gland oncocytoma: Imaging features and histopathological correlation of a rare benign salivary gland tumor.

Submandibular gland oncocytoma is a rare benign epithelial tumor accounting for less than 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It is composed of oncocytes-large polygonal epithelial cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm resulting from mitochondrial accumulation-and typically affects adults between the fifth and seventh decades of life, without a clear gender predilection. Radiation exposure has been reported as a possible predisposing factor. Clinically, oncocytomas usually present as painless, slow-growing masses. Imaging modalities, particularly ultrasound and contrast-enhanced …

A gland of diverse pathology and unpredictable behaviour: our experience of primary submandibular gland malignancies.

Submandibular gland tumours are relatively uncommon tumours and demonstrate diverse histological types and a variable prognosis. The aim of this study was to analyze our experience with submandibular malignancies over a period of 6 years (January 2009 to December 2015). Patient data from the 6-year period were reviewed retrospectively and 51 patients with submandibular malignancies were identified. Demographic data, clinicopathological details, treatment received, complications, and follow-up were recorded. The mean age of the 51 patients at presentation was 49.1 years. They were followed up f…

Morphometric Study of Diabetes Related Alterations in Human Parotid Gland and Comparison with Submandibular Gland.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents one of the principal diseases that afflict the world population and is often associated with malfunction of salivary glands and consequent oral diseases. We recently described significant ultrastructural alterations in the human submandibular gland in diabetic patients without evident oral pathologies. Herein, an analogs morphometrical investigation was focused on the parotid gland in order to evaluate if one of the two glands is more affected by diabetes. Parotid fragments from diabetic and nondiabetic patients were fixed, dehydrated, and processed for ligh…

Impact of submandibular gland excision on salivary gland function in head and neck cancer patients.

Head and neck cancer surgery is often associated with neck dissection and usually includes the submandibular glands. Literature data related to remaining salivary gland function after surgery is scarce and controversial. A reduction in salivary output and increase in complaints of xerostomia have been suggested. However, a compensatory salivary mechanism has also been reported. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effect of neck dissection (with submandibular excision) on salivary gland function measured by salivary flow rate and salivary gland scintigraphy. A total of 80 pati…

Malignant epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the submandibular gland: A case report.

An epithelioid angiomyolipoma (a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with distinctive cellular morphology and nonspecific imaging appearances. Mostly reported perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are benign; however, rarely, PEComas can be malignant with pulmonary, hepatic, nodal, and osseous metastases. We present a case of a 40-year-old man with malignant right submandibular salivary gland PEComa, metastasized to the bones, lungs, and liver. We are going to discuss the diagnosis and management options of the rare disease of metastatic PEComa of the s
