Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A review about its efficacy in the treatment of alcohol, tobacco and cocaine addiction.

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic and relapsing disease characterized by craving, loss of control, tolerance and physical dependence. At present, the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial intervention is the most effective management strategy in preventing relapse to reduce dropout rates and promote abstinence in SUD patients. However, only few effective medications are available. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that modulates the cellular activity of the cerebral cortex through a magnetic pulse applied on selected brain a

A "krokodil" emerges from the murky waters of addiction. Abuse trends of an old drug.

"Krokodil" is the street name for the semi-synthetic opioid derivative desomorphine. Although an old drug, it re-staged on "drug arena" during the last decade causing detrimental effects to its users. Despite the fact that Russia and other former Soviet Republics were the initial plagued countries, "krokodil" arrived in Europe and United States lately, as a substitute of the relative expensive, and in many cases unavailable, heroin. It can be easily manufactured in home-environment from codeine and causes significant health problems, even deaths worldwide. The aim of this review is to summariz

Addiction and dependence in DSM-V.

As preparations for the fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) are under way, this paper focuses upon changes proposed for the substance use disorders section. It briefly outlines the history behind the current nomenclature, and the selection of the term 'dependence' over 'addiction' in earlier versions of the DSM. The term 'dependence', while used in past decades to refer to uncontrolled drug-seeking behavior, has an alternative meaning--the physiological adaptation that occurs when medications acting on the central nervous system are ingested with r

Are natural disasters in early childhood associated with mental health and substance use disorders as an adult?

Understanding factors that influence risk for mental health and substance use disorders is critical to improve population health and reduce social costs imposed by these disorders. We examine the impact of experiencing a natural disaster-a serious fire, tornado, flood, earthquake, or hurricane-by age five on adult mental health and substance use disorders. The analysis uses data from the 2004 to 2005 National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. The analysis sample includes 27,129 individuals ages 21-64 years. We also exploit information on parenting strategies to study how

Substance misuse trends in South Africa.

This paper, the first in a series related to the Joint European South African Research Network in Anxiety Disorders programme, examines substance use trends in South Africa. Alcohol remains the substance with the greatest burden of harm. Yet, trends vary by region, with for example methamphetamine being a major driver of psychiatric and substance abuse treatment demand in the Western Cape province. Heroin use is increasing in several provinces, where rapid intervention is required to avoid an epidemic. In particular, the state (the main funder of drug services) urgently needs to provide opioid

Interpersonal trauma, shame, and substance use: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal trauma is a risk factor for a wide array of adverse mental health outcomes, including substance use. Research has begun investigating the role of shame in the intersection between substance use and interpersonal trauma. The current systematic review summarizes the existing literature documenting the relation among shame, substance use, and interpersonal trauma. METHOD: Articles were collected using a Boolean search strategy of terms related to interpersonal trauma, substance use, and shame across six databases. Independent search and screening by three researchers le

Substance-use Disorders, Opportunistic Infections, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Patients.

The excessive use of a drug that is harmful to the person as well as society at large is referred to as substance addiction or abuse. Some substances and risky and unsafe sexual behavior have been linked to an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. These frequently used substances include tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, crack cocaine, and opiates. More than 50% of HIV patients were found to use alcohol, compared to 5-15% for cocaine.1 Marijuana, too, is prevalent in HIV patients. People with HIV smoke twice as much tobacco as the general population.1.

Cluster analysis of HIV intervention outcomes among substance-abusing women.

The study described here presents an innovative approach to analyzing intervention outcomes among women substance abusers participating in a national HIV prevention research study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. We used cluster analysis to divide the women in our sample (N=557) into four distinct subgroups predominantly characterized by differences in drug use, injecting risk, sexual behaviors, and drug and sexual risk combined. The four subgroups resulting from this process were primary crack-using women, primary needle-using women, high-frequency needle-using women, and women

Sleep quality in returning veterans: The influence of mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbance is a key behavioral health concern among Iraq and Afghanistan era veterans and is a frequent complaint among veterans with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Currently, it is unclear whether sleep disturbance is a core sequelae of mTBI or if it may be related to other behavioral health conditions that are commonly present in postdeployment veterans. The purpose of this study was to determine if history of mTBI is associated with poor sleep quality beyond combat exposure and behavioral health concerns, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mo

Prevalence of benzodiazepine use disorder during hospitalization for alcohol detoxification.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are the first-line treatment of alcohol withdrawal. Comorbidity between benzodiazepine use disorder (BUD) and alcohol use disorders (AUD) is common. However, the risk factors are poorly characterized due to the paucity of available BUD screening tools. The present study aimed to rectify this by conducting an observational screening investigation for BUD in patients hospitalized for alcohol detoxification in a specialized unit. During a face-to-face interview, a short BUD screening tool, Echelle Cognitive d'Attachement aux benzodiazépines (ECAB), was administered to recor
