Position of the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and Urogynecology in relation to the use of synthetic suburethral meshes for the surgical treatment of female stress incontinence.

AIMS: The aim of this paper is to stablish de position of the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and Urogynecology (SINUG) in relation to the use of suburethral meshes for the surgical treatment of female stress incontinence. METHODS: Tension-free mid-urethral slings (MUS) have become the most popular procedure for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In July 2018, the British government announced a pause in the use of meshes for both pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary incontinence (UI) treatment without differentiating whether the meshes were used for treating UI or P

Impact of mid-urethral sling surgery on sexual function in women with stress urinary incontinence: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Mid-urethral slings (MUS) are widely used to treat urinary incontinence. However, there is limited evidence of their long-term effects on female sexual function. OBJECTIVES: To address this gap, this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluates changes in Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire-12 scores at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months postoperatively. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Central, and Embase for studies evaluating the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire-12 scores 6, 12, 24, and 36 months

Bladder Erosion and stone formation: a rare complication of laparoscopic cervical cerclage.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cerclage represents a practical approach to addressing cervical insufficiency, but it also can bring serious complications. We present an extremely rare case of bladder erosion caused by the exposure of Mersilene tape after laparoscopic cervical cerclage for 3 years, which resulted in the formation of bladder calculi. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 35-year-old gravida 5 para 2 female with symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infections after 3 years of exposure to the Mersilene tape, including urinary frequency urinary urgency and painful micturition. The patient un

Evaluation and Management of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence.

Female stress urinary incontinence, the loss of urine with transient increases in abdominal pressure, is a common condition that can profoundly impact a patient's quality of life. The diagnosis is most commonly made via clinical history, including the subjective degree of bother, and physical examination evidence of urinary leakage with cough or Valsalva maneuver. A variety of treatment options exist for stress incontinence, ranging from observation, pelvic floor physical therapy, vaginal inserts, or continence pessaries to procedural interventions. Observation and conservative measures (eg, p

When things go wrong: experiences of vaginal mesh complications.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has suggested that complications stemming from vaginal mesh can lead to life-changing negative physical consequences including erosion and chronic pain. However, there has been little research on the experiences of women who have had complications. This study was aimed at exploring the individual experiences of women who have had vaginal mesh complications and how this has impacted them. METHODS: An explorative qualitative design was followed. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who had experienced complications with vaginal mesh due t

Comparison of retropubic tension-free vaginal tape inserted on two different height positions.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Surgical treatment using the mid-urethral tape has become a gold standard in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women. Many urogynecologists use ultrasound during the postoperative follow-up. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the position of the tape in the mid- or distal-urethra could influence the subjective assessment after surgery in 1-month control based on questionnaires of genitourinary symptoms, UDI6-SF and VAS scale. METHODS: A group of 76 patients using a synthetic tension-free retropubic vaginal tape after anti-incontinence s

Reoperation rates for stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women after undergoing Mid-Urethral sling with or without concomitant colporrhaphy in academic centers within the United States.

In this study, the rates of reoperation for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in women who underwent a mid-urethral sling (MUS) with or without concurrent colporrhaphy were evaluated. An academic faculty practice consortium database was used to identify a cohort of patients treated surgically for SUI with or without concurrent POP repair (apical, anterior, posterior, or a combination of the three) with or without hysterectomy between 2009 and 2011. A total of 20,484 patients matched the criteria. Of patients who underwent a MUS, 7.2% underwent secondary surgery,

The impact of surgeon operative volume on risk of reoperation within 5 years of mid-urethral sling: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Undesired outcomes after mid-urethral sling (MUS), such as mesh exposure or surgical failure, can necessitate further procedures. The objective of this review is to evaluate the association between surgeon operative volume and the risk of reoperation after MUS. METHODS: Eligible studies were selected through an electronic literature search from database and references of the studies included. Databases were searched for original studies reporting on the MUS procedure, reoperation, and operative volume. Random effects models were used to estimate the pooled OR of r

Biodegradable materials for surgical management of stress urinary incontinence: A narrative review.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) was managed with techniques such as colposuspension, autologous fascia sling and urethral bulking agents. The introduction of the mid-urethral polypropylene (PP) sling in the 1990s led to a significant and rapid global change in SUI surgery. The synthetic non-degradable PP sling had superior results to traditional SUI procedures but its use has now declined due to significant complications such as pain and mesh erosion. These complications are attributed to its poor biocompatibility and integration into vaginal tissues. The efficacy of PP was extrapolated from

Comparison of urethral sling surgery and non-ablative vaginal Erbium:YAG laser treatment in 327 patients with stress urinary incontinence: a case-matching analysis.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) occurs when abdominal pressure, such as from coughing or sneezing, causes urine leakage. We retrospectively compared tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) and non-ablative vaginal Erbium:YAG laser treatment (VEL) by propensity score (PS) analysis in women with SUI. No PS analysis studies have investigated urethral sling surgery using polypropylene TVT and VEL for SUI. Data from patients aged 35-50 years who were treated for SUI and registered at several institutions were selected. Patients with medical records covering 1 year for the 1-h pad test, who completed the
