Nickel release from stainless steels.

In 1994, a study of nickel release and allergic contact dermatitis from nickel-plated metals and stainless steels was published in this journal. It was shown that low-sulfur stainless steel grades like AISI 304, 316L or 430 (S < or = 0.007%) release less than 0.03 microgram/cm2/week of nickel in acid artificial sweat and elicit no reactions in patients already sensitized to nickel. In contrast, nickel-plated samples release around 100 micrograms/cm2/week of Ni and high-sulfur stainless steel (AISI 303-S approximately 0.3%) releases about 1.5 micrograms/cm2/week in this acid artificial sweat. Oxidative Neutralisation of Sulfur-Based Chemical Warfare Agents Mediated by a Lipase: From Batch to Flow Reactor.

The sulfur-containing chemical warfare agents sulfur mustard HD and nerve agent VX are highly toxic and persistent in the environment. Therefore, their neutralisation requires harsh oxidation conditions, but also precise selectivity. Here we report the safe and effective detoxification of surrogates CEES and PhX by selective oxidation of the sulfur atom by generating peracetic acid from AcOEt and aq. H2O2 assisted by the supported lipase CALB. Morever, it is possible to perform these neutralisations with safe 'on demand' generation of AcOOH in a flow system by using a packed bed reactor contai

Characterization of forced degradation products of torasemide through MS tools and explanation of unusual losses observed during mass fragmentation of drug and degradation products through density functional theory.

Mass spectrometry tools (HRMS/LC-HRMS, MSn, and/or on-line H/D exchange) were employed to establish mass fragmentation pattern of torasemide and to characterize its degradation products. During collision-induced dissociation, multiple rearrangement processes and unusual losses of sulfur (S), sulfanyl (HS), sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulphinic acid radical (HSO2), sulfur monoxide (SO), carbon monoxide (CO), formyl radical (CHO) and C5H3NOS were observed. The same were successfully explained by study of energy profiles, established by application of density functional theory (DFT).

Particle nucleation in the tropical boundary layer and its coupling to marine sulfur sources.

New particle formation in a tropical marine boundary layer setting was characterized during NASA's Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A program. It represents the clearest demonstration to date of aerosol nucleation and growth being linked to the natural marine sulfur cycle. This conclusion was based on real-time observations of dimethylsulfide, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid (gas), hydroxide, ozone, temperature, relative humidity, aerosol size and number distribution, and total aerosol surface area. Classic binary nucleation theory predicts no nucleation under the observed marine boundary lay

Multi-omics insights into sulfur metabolism and methylthio alcohols formation during industrial radish paocai fermentation.

Sichuan paocai is a traditional Chinese fermented vegetable whose characteristic aroma is strongly influenced by volatile sulfur-containing compounds (VSCs). Among them, 3-(methylthio)-1-propanol and 2-(methylthio)ethanol are key odor-active components, yet their biosynthetic mechanisms and microbial drivers in paocai remain poorly understood. In this study, an integrated metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and metabolomic approach was employed to systematically elucidate the formation pathways of these two methylthio alcohols during industrial radish paocai fermentation. Dynamic changes in mic

Distinct Roles of Dilute Acid and Ammonia in Steam Explosion of Corn Stover: Linking Biomass Structure to Bioconversion.

Dilute acid- and ammonia-assisted steam explosion (SE) are promising pretreatments for lignocellulosic biorefineries and induce distinct structural changes in biomass. Here, sulfuric acid-, phosphoric acid-, and ammonia-assisted SE were comparatively investigated within a wash-free framework to elucidate additive-dependent mechanisms linking biomass structural reconstruction to downstream bioconversion. Mechanistic analyses revealed that sulfuric acid-assisted SE intensified lignin-related inhibition, resulting in the highest surface lignin coverage (SLC) and the strongest non-productive cellu

Sulfur incorporation into biomolecules: recent advances.

Sulfur is an essential element for a variety of cellular constituents in all living organisms and adds considerable functionality to a wide range of biomolecules. The pathways for incorporating sulfur into central metabolites of the cell such as cysteine, methionine, cystathionine, and homocysteine have long been established. Furthermore, the importance of persulfide intermediates during the biosynthesis of thionucleotide-containing tRNAs, iron-sulfur clusters, thiamin diphosphate, and the molybdenum cofactor are well known. This review briefly surveys these topics while emphasizing more recen

Trichothiodystrophy: quantification of cysteine in human hair and nails by application of sodium azide-dependent oxidation to cysteic acid.

The term "trichothiodystrophy" (TTD) covers several autosomal recessive diseases whose diagnostic hallmark is short, brittle hair low in sulfur and cystine because of impaired synthesis of high-sulfur matrix protein. Clinical symptoms associated with TTD represent a variable range of abnormalities in organs derived from ectoderm and neuroectoderm. Important laboratory tests of the hair for the diagnosis of TTD comprise polarizing microscopy ("tiger-tail" pattern), electron microscopy, and amino acids analysis of hydrolyzed hair with a special focus on cystine. However, only very few institutio

Hepatic glutathione, metallothionein and zinc in the rat on gestational day 19 during chronic ethanol administration.

Ethanol, under certain conditions, alters the metabolism of sulfur amino acids, metallothionein (MT) and zinc. If chronic ethanol administration during pregnancy decreases the availability of sulfur amino acids or Zn, this deficiency could contribute to growth retardation of the fetuses, one of the features of fetal alcohol syndrome. The purpose of this study was to discern whether chronic ethanol administration to pregnant rats alters glutathione (GSH), MT or Zn content of selected tissues of the dams and fetuses. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed from gestational days 5 to 19 either the control d

Determination and metabolism of dithiol chelating agents. VIII. Metal complexes of meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid.

Metal complexes of meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) with Pb2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+ were studied by potentiometric and infrared methods. This dimercapto metal-binding agent was found to form complexes whose structures are dependent on the metal ion to be complexed. In the cases of Pb2+ and Cd2+, one oxygen and one sulfur act as the donor atoms; in the case of Hg2+, two sulfur atoms act as the donors. The solubilities of all metal chelates were found to be pH dependent. Complexes of cadmium and lead are insoluble in the pH range 1.0 to 7.1, but are solubilized when the noncoordinated sulfhydryl an

From multiphase redistribution to emission control: deciphering iron-mediated interactions in sulfur dynamics during sludge anaerobic digestion.

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are malodorous and hazardous gases, which are generated during the anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS). Iron can mediate sulfur transformation during AD process. The evolution and distribution of sulfur across the gas-liquid-solid phases in the presence of ferric chloride (FeCl3) remain poorly understood. In this study, semicontinuous anaerobic digesters were employed to decipher iron-mediated interactions in sulfur dynamics during the AD of WAS. The results showed that FeCl3 significantly decreased the generation of all kinds of VSCs (a to

Inhibitory effects of sulfur dioxide within the nucleus tractus solitarii of rats: involvement of Calcium Ion channels, Adenine nucleoside triphosphate-sensitive potassium channels, and the nitric oxide/cyclic Guanine trinucleotide phosphate pathway.

This study was designed to investigate the cardiovascular effects of sulfur dioxide within the nucleus tractus solitarii. Sulfur dioxide or artificial cerebrospinal fluid was unilaterally applied into the nucleus tractus solitarii of rats, and the effects on blood pressure, heart rate, and arterial baroreflex sensitivity (ABR) were determined. To explore the mechanisms of the effects of intra-nucleus tractus solitarii sulfur dioxide, various inhibitors were applied prior to sulfur dioxide treatment. Unilateral microinjection of sulfur dioxide produced a dose-dependent decrease in blood pressur

The impact of SO2 on wine flavanols and indoles in relation to wine style and age.

Wine has one of the broadest chemical profiles, and the common oenological practice of adding the antioxidant and antimicrobial sulfur dioxide has a major impact on its metabolomic fingerprint. In this study, we investigated novel discovered oenological reactions primarily occurring between wine metabolites and sulfur dioxide. The sulfonated derivatives of epicatechin, procyanidin B2, indole acetic acid, indole lactic acid and tryptophol were synthesized and for the first time quantified in wine. Analysis of 32 metabolites in 195 commercial wines (1986-2016 vintages) suggested that sulfonation

Fate of ammonia in the atmosphere--a review for applicability to hazardous releases.

The physical and chemical mechanisms responsible for the removal of ammonia from the atmosphere have been reviewed. Capture by atmospheric moisture (clouds, rain, fog), surface water (rivers, lakes, seas), and deposition on vegetation and soil constitute the main pathways for ammonia removal from the troposphere. Ammonia catalyzes the atmospheric oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide and reacts rapidly with acidic components of the atmosphere (sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids). The ammonium salts formed are the main components of smog aerosols and thus affect the opacity of th

Coulometric detector based on porous carbon felt working electrode for flow injection analysis.

A coulometric detector based on carbon felt as working electrode has been designed. Ascorbic acid, hydroquinone, gallic acid and sulfur dioxide were used as electroactive compounds to determine the electrochemical characteristics of this detector. The coulometric conversion efficiency, selectivity, linear response range, detection limit and mass transfer coefficient were investigated in order to use the detector as a cleanup device in a flow injection system with dual-detector. This system has been used for determination of sulfur dioxide in wine, and the results are compared to those from the

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in oil reservoir and biological control of SRB: a review.

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhabit oilfield production systems. Sulfur oxidation driven by SOB and dissimilatory sulfate reduction driven by SRB play important roles in sulfur cycle of oil reservoirs. More importantly, hydrogen sulfide produced by SRB is an acidic, flammable, and smelly toxic gas associated with reservoir souring, corrosion of oil-production facilities, and personnel safety. Effective control of SRB is urgently needed for the oil industry. This depends on an in-depth understanding of the microbial species that drive sulfur cycle and oth

Characterization and quantification of groundwater sulfate sources at a mining site in an arid climate: The Monument Valley site in Arizona, USA.

The Monument Valley site, a former uranium mining site located in the state of Arizona in the Southwest USA, has high concentrations of sulfate in groundwater. Stable isotope analysis of S and O for sulfate, in combination with geochemical and hydrogeological data, was used to characterize the sources and fate of sulfate. The results indicate the existence of two discrete sources of sulfate (in excess of baseline levels): sulfuric acid released during ore processing and sulfate generated via sulfide-mineral oxidation. The contributions of the sources are related to spatial distributions of sul

The effect of biofilm growth on the sulfur oxidation pathway and the synergy of microorganisms in desulfurization reactors under different pH conditions.

Biofilm growth affects the oxygen transfer in biofilm and thus the oxidation pathway of sulfur and the synergy of microorganisms. In this study, the effect of biofilm growth on the oxidation pathway of H2S and the synergy of microorganisms in desulfurization reactors under different pH conditions was first discussed to enhance the understanding of desulfurization process. A biotrickling filter (BTF) was operated for 168 days under acidic condition (pH<4.7) and 32 days under alkaline condition (7.0 <pH<10.2). In acidic period, the average growth mass (AGM) of biofilm was 0.04 g/L-BTF/d, and mos

Electrochemical thioester synthesis enabled by phosphine promotion from carboxylic acids and disulfides.

Thioesters serve as important pharmacophores and synthetic intermediates, yet their conventional synthesis typically requires high temperatures, transition metal catalysts, or toxic and malodorous thiols. Herein, we present a simple and green electrochemical approach for the thioesterification of carboxylic acids with aromatic disulfides as direct sulfur surrogates, promoted by triphenylphosphine. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions without requiring transition metals, external reducing agents, or inert atmosphere. A broad scope of aromatic, aliphatic, and heterocyclic carboxylic acids
