BACKGROUND: This study aims to provide a general overview of cancer risk perceptions and reported sunburns to prevent sunburn and reduce the long-term risk of developing skin cancer.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey 6 and analysis was carried out with SPSS. Descriptive statistics were conducted to explore sociodemographic characteristics, cancer risk perceptions, and behaviors surrounding sunburns in our sample. A preliminary inquiry, conducted on Martinique Island, sought to determine kite-surfers' sun-protection knowledge and behaviours. Results revealed good levels of knowledge and behaviours, but very frequent sunburns (74% had at least one sunburn during the last 6 months), with particularly severe sunburns exclusively among vacationers. These results argue for the double need to focus sunburn-prevention programs on vacationers and technically adapt sun-protection means to a tropical maritime environment.

A sun protection factor (SPF)-15 and an SPF-30 sunscreen were compared with regard to their ability to prevent sunburn cell formation after the exposure of human skin to a standardized dose of solar-simulated radiation. The SPF-30 sunscreen provided a significantly superior degree of photoprotection and almost prevented sunburn cell induction. Because sunburn cells may be markers of ultraviolet radiation-induced damage to DNA, the new superpotent sunscreens should offer an advantage in the prevention of skin cancer and long-term actinic damage to skin.
