Benign symmetric lipomatosis is a rare condition predominantly seen in male patients. The etiology is unknown, and therapy is difficult, although liposuction has had effect. We describe a 38-year-old male patient who had suffered from severe adipositas since the age of 7. Due to an ulceration in the groin, he later needed intensive care, and in order to normalize his condition, extensive surgical treatment became necessary.

BACKGROUND: Resection of the soft palate in tumor surgery can lead to significant swallowing disorders. Therefore rehabilitation needs a functional reconstruction of the remaining defects.

Advances during the last 15 years in microsurgical technique and in our understanding of vascular anatomy have led to the development of two new branches of plastic and reconstructive surgery. The first is the transfer of free composite flaps with microvascular anastomoses. The second is transposition of island flaps solely on a proximal or distal vascular bundle. Both types of operations require an adequate vascular pedicle to provide sufficient blood circulation for flap viability and survival in the recipient site.

After conservative treatment for breast cancer, 75% of patients have good cosmetic results, but 20 to 25% of patients have a fair or a bad result. Plastic surgeons from Los Angeles and New York (N = 182) were surveyed on their opinions of facial plastic surgery for individuals with Down syndrome. Of the 100 respondents, 88 were familiar with the procedures, and 24 had performed the surgery. The surgeons indicated the circumstances for recommending the surgery, who would be required to give consent, the degree to which they thought individuals with Down syndrome could understand the nature of the surgery, and their opinion of the degree of discomfort associated with the surgery.

In most patients with long-standing injuries of ligaments of the knee joint there develops a deforming arthrosis. So, the operative techniques of recovering their stability must be at most sparing. The author thinks the use of "closed" methods of plasty of the ligaments to be expedient. He has elaborated two new methods of operations which were recognized as inventions. Operations were made on 47 patients with good results observed up to 3.5 years.
