Prolonged swimming exercise training induce hypophosphatemic osteopenia in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).

Stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) induce spontaneous osteoporosis. To elucidate the specific characteristics of bone metabolism, the SHRSP was compared with age matched Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. We investigated the effects of prolonged swimming exercise training on bone mineral density (BMD) and metabolism in the SHRSP. Seven-week-old male SHRSP and WKY were divided into three groups; the sedentary control WKY group (n = 6, WKY), the sedentary control SHRSP group (n = 6, SP) and the swimming exercise training SHRSP group (n = 6, SWIM) (in pool with 60 min./day, 5 days/week fo…

A kinematic comparison of L-DOPA-induced air-stepping and swimming in developing rats.

In Experiment 1, rats of 5, 10, 15, and 20 days of age were injected with L-DOPA to elicit stepping and videotaped while suspended in air and in warm water. Inter- and intralimb coordination were similar for L-DOPA-induced air-stepping and swimming at all ages. Other parameters of locomotion, such as step length and step rate, varied by substrate. In Experiment 2, pups of 5 to 20 days of age received an injection of L-DOPA or the vehicle and were videotaped while freely swimming. L-DOPA-induced free swimming was more stereotyped and "automatonlike" than that of vehicle-injected animals. Throug…

Compensatory eye movements produced during fictive swimming of a deafferented, reduced preparation in vitro.

Movement of the head during locomotion must be offset by movement of the eyes in the opposite direction in order to maintain a stable gaze. These compensatory eye movements are classically attributed to ocular reflexes elicited by vestibular stimulation and by slip of the retinal image. In the present study, compensatory eye movements accompanied episodes of fictive swimming expressed in vitro by a reduced, deafferented preparation of the bullfrog larva (tadpole). Thus, there are mechanisms for generation of eye movements, and their coordination with locomotion, that are endogenous to the cent…

Decellularized fish swim bladder as a dermal graft: Histological, biomechanical, and in vivo characterization.

Effective skin substitutes must create a supportive microenvironment that promotes cell attachment, migration, and integration within the scaffold matrix. Decellularized fish swim bladder (DFSB) scaffolds offer a collagen-rich matrix substitute with promising regenerative potential, although species-specific differences in their performance are not yet fully understood. This study aimed to identify the DFSB scaffold that best promotes cellular infiltration and wound healing, with an emphasis on modulating inflammation. In this study, a novel in vivo approach was developed to directly assess ce

Swim Bladder Inflation in Fish: A Sensitive Endpoint for Risk Assessment and Mechanistic Research.

The swim bladder is a vital organ in many bony fish, playing an essential role in buoyancy regulation, position control in water and consequently survival. Ultimately, its potential malfunctioning may affect foraging efficiency, predator avoidance, and therefore population fitness. Nevertheless, proper swim bladder inflation is rarely systematically recorded as an endpoint in fish toxicity studies, regardless of the chemical class or mode of action under investigation. This represents a missed opportunity to detect sensitive sublethal effects and accumulate mechanistic evidence across studies.

Effects of Intrinsic and Orbital Angular Momentum on the Swimming Individual and Relay Starts Performance.

There is currently a lack of knowledge about the rotational component of competitive starting techniques using starting blocks equipped with an adjustable back plate and its effect on water entry. The aim of the present study was to examine the angular momentum components of the current competitive swimming starts and to compare the contribution of the body segments to the rotational component of the individual kick start and the relay step start techniques. The block and aerial starting movements of eleven competitive swimmers during an individual and relay start from an Omega OSB11 were film…

EC-FST: A novel pipeline for automatically analyzing mouse forced swim test.

BACKGROUND: The mouse forced swim test (FST) is widely used to evaluate the efficacy of potential anti-depressant drugs. Traditional methods for analyzing forced swim test results rely on manually setting the threshold for immobility, which is time-consuming and barely reproducible. NEW METHOD: In the present study, we introduced a novel pipeline (EC-FST) by extracting the feature of mouse status instead of calculating immobility time. First, we utilized event camera, a powerful AI tool for dynamic object-tracking framework, to capture the mobile events from mouse forced swim test. By quantif

Morphology and Histological Observation of the Male Reproductive System in the Swimming Crab (Portunus trituberculatus).

The swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) is an economically important marine crab species in China. Understanding the structure and function of the male reproductive system in the swimming crab is crucial for increasing reproductive efficiency. Although studies on its reproductive biology have increased in recent years, the ultrastructure of the male copulatory system remains insufficiently explored. In this study, gonadal tissues [testes (T), anterior vas deferens (AVD), middle vas deferens (MVD), posterior vas deferens (PVD)] and copulatory organs [first gonopod (G1), second gonopod (G2)…

Effects of disinfection by-products in swimming pool environments on the immunological mechanisms of respiratory diseases.

Swimming in pools is a popular and healthy recreational activity. However, potential adverse health effects from disinfection byproduct (DBP) exposure in pool water are concerning. This study evaluated how such DBP exposure affects the respiratory system. DBP exposure was simulated with an animal-specific pool environment model. Experimental animals were exposed to DBPs for a specified duration and frequency over 4 weeks. The wet and dry weights of murine lungs were measured, with no significant differences observed. There were no significant differences in interkeukin (IL)-2/4/10, and interfe…

SWIM domain protein ZSWIM4 is required for JAK2 inhibition resistance in breast cancer.

AIMS: Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling plays a critical role in the progression of breast cancer. However, a small part of tumor cells survived from the killing effect of JAK2 inhibitor. We aimed to find out the mechanism of drug resistance in breast cancer cells and develop new therapeutic strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-tumor effect of TG101209 in breast cancer cells was confirmed by cell counting kit 8 and flow cytometry. Western blotting was used to determine the up-regulation of zinc finger SWIM-type containing 4 (ZSWIM4)

Comparative Behavioral Correlation of High and Low-Performing Mice in the Forced Swim Test.

Behavioral analysis in mice provided important contributions in helping understand and treat numerous neurobehavioral and neuropsychiatric disorders. The behavioral performance of animals and humans is widely different among individuals but the neurobehavioral mechanism of the innate difference is seldom investigated. Many neurologic conditions share comorbid symptoms that may have common pathophysiology and therapeutic strategy. The forced swim test (FST) has been commonly used to evaluate the "antidepressant" properties of drugs yet the individual difference analysis of this test was left sc

Stress-sensitive antidepressant-like effects of ketamine in the mouse forced swim test.

Major depression is a stress-linked disease with significant morbidity and the anesthetic drug ketamine is of growing interest in the treatm … s (UCS). We find that ketamine (24 hours post-injection) decreases immobility and increases mobile (swimming) behavior (antidepressant-like effects) in UCS animals but does the opposite in unstressed mice, similar to recent human findings. In summary, these data suggest that chronic psychological stress interacts with ketamine treatment to modulate its eff …

Role of filtration in managing the risk from Cryptosporidium in commercial swimming pools - a review.

Most commercial swimming pools use pressurised filters, typically containing sand media, to remove suspended solids as part of the water treatment process designed to keep water attractive, clean and safe. The accidental release of faecal material by bathers presents a poorly quantified risk to the safety of swimmers using the pool. The water treatment process usually includes a combination of maintaining a residual concentration of an appropriate biocide in the pool together with filtration to physically remove particles, including microbial pathogens, from the water. However, there is uncert…

Consequences of electroshock-induced narcosis in fish muscle: from mitochondria to swim performance.

Adult zebrafish Danio rerio were exposed to an electric shock of 3 V and 1A for 5 s delivered by field backpack electrofishing gear, to induce a taxis followed by a narcosis. The effect of such electric shock was investigated on both the individual performances (swimming capacities and costs of transport) and at cellular and mitochondrial levels (oxygen consumption and oxidative balance). The observed survival rate was very high (96·8%) independent of swimming speed (up to 10 body length s-1 ). The results showed no effect of the treatment on the metabolism and cost of transport of the fish. N…

Prediction of human efficacious antidepressant doses using the mouse forced swim test.

The forced swim test (FST) is a commonly used preclinical animal behavioural model for prediction of antidepressant activity in humans. While the FST may qualitatively predict efficacy, less is known about the quantitative translation of FST data to human efficacious doses. Assessing quantitative translation allows better predictions of human efficacious doses and a higher chance of success in the drug development process. Dose-response and time-course FST experiments were carried out on mice using four marketed antidepressants (citalopram, desipramine, bupropion, desvenlafaxine) in addition t
