Acute to subacute vitamin D toxicosis is described in two different fattening pig herds. A few days after admixing a new batch of vitamin/mineral-premix most of the fattening hogs developed anorexia, polydipsia and polyuria. Emesis was seen in some of the animals. Chlamydia psittaci was believed responsible for an episode of high perinatal death loss in a swine herd in which 8.5 pigs per litter normally were weaned. In this episode, 18 sows produced 186 pigs, with 50 survivors. Chlamydia was found in tissue samples, and other bacterial or viral pathogens could not be identified. Chlamydia was diagnosed by isolation (ELISA), histologic examination using immunoperoxidase staining techniques, and electron microscopy. Previously, C psittaci has not been considered in the differential diagnosis of swine perinatal mortality.

This paper summarizes the literature on swine mange, incorporating relevant literature on human scabies and on acarine associations with other mammals. Discussed are how mite populations affect immune development, how immune hypersensitivity affects host behavior and performance, and how immune hypersensitivity determines whether or not crusted lesions develop. A histological classification of 36 cases of malignant lymphoma in slaughtered swine is reported. All the lymphomas observed were diagnosed as diffuse types and were further classified into four types by their histological characteristics based on the classification of the Japanese Lymphoma Study Group (Suchi et al., 1979). A tongue biopsy technique developed for the detection of Trichinella spiralis infection in swine involves taking a deep core biopsy of the tongue musculature, and examination of the sample by digestion. Using this procedure, 31 of 52 (60%) swine from an Indiana herd were found to be infected with T. spiralis. The average biopsy weighed 0.42 g, and the intensity of infection averaged 180 larvae per gram (range 2-1157). Tissue, fecal, and serum specimens and swabs of nasal turbinates and tracheas were collected from 100 wild swine (Sus scrofa) from 10 populations in Texas and, along with 24 additional serum specimens, were evaluated for selected swine diseases. Swine positive for pseudorabies were detected in 7 populations. Brucella suis biovar 1 was isolated from 4 swine from 2 populations, but positive serologic results may indicate a more widespread distribution of the organism. All populations contained swine that were positive for leptospirosis. Trichinella spiralis was not found in the swine evaluated.

Chronic erysipelas polyarthritis in pigs is considered to be an animal model closely resembling human rheumatoid arthritis. In an experimental study using SPF pigs infected with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae several immunopathological aspects were studied for up to 14 months after infection.
