Machine Learning-Based Assessment of Parkinson's Disease Symptoms Using Wearable and Smartphone Sensors.

This study explores the use of machine learning models to assess the severity of Parkinson's disease symptoms based on data from wearable and smartphone sensors. It presents models to predict the severities of individual symptoms-tremor, bradykinesia, stiffness, and dyskinesia-as well as the overall state of patients, using both clinician and patient self-assessments as labels. The dataset, although limited and imbalanced, enabled the identification of key trends. The best performance was achieved when combining data from both the MYO armband and smartphone, and when using patient self-assessm

Proxy measures for the assessment of psychotic and affective symptoms in studies using electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of standardised psychometric data in electronic health record (EHR)-based research. Proxy measures of symptom severity based on patients' clinical records may be useful surrogates in mental health EHR research. AIMS: This study aimed to validate proxy tools for the short versions of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS-6), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS-6) and Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS-6). METHOD: A cross-sectional, multicentre study was conducted in a sample of 116 patients with first-episode psychosis from 12 public hospitals in

Are symptoms assessed differently for schizophrenia and other psychoses in legal insanity evaluations of violent crimes?

BACKGROUND: Forensic evaluations of legal insanity include the experts' assessment of symptoms present at the mental state examination (MSE) and the mental state at the time of offense (MSO). Delusions and hallucinations are most important. We explored how often symptoms were recorded in written forensic reports. DESIGN: This exploratory, cross-sectional study included 500 reports of legal insanity written in 2009-2018 from cases of violent crimes in Norway. The first author read all reports and coded symptoms recorded from the experts' assessments of the offenders. Two co-authors repeated th

Translation of the Pasieka's Parathyroid Assessment of Symptoms Questionnaire (PAS-Q) for Use in the Greek Population.

INTRODUCTION: In Europe, primary hyperparathyroidism is mainly considered an asymptomatic disorder, although there is evidence that patients' health-related quality of life is impaired. This aspect is mostly evaluated using Pasieka's Questionnaire: a disease-specific diagnostic tool. The purpose of this study was to translate the Pasieka's Questionnaire into the Greek language and adapt it to the Greek population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pasieka's Questionnaire consists of 13 questions. Two bilingual, native Greek experts were selected for step one, each of whom offered a blinded Greek version

The feasibility of a Bayesian network model to assess the probability of simultaneous symptoms in patients with advanced cancer.

Although patients with advanced cancer often experience multiple symptoms simultaneously, clinicians usually focus on symptoms that are volunteered by patients during regular history-taking. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a Bayesian network (BN) model to predict the presence of simultaneous symptoms, based on the presence of other symptoms. Our goal is to help clinicians prioritize which symptoms to assess. Patient-reported severity of 11 symptoms (scale 0-10) was measured using an adapted Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) in a national cross-sectional survey among advanced can…

Predicting the Severity of Parkinson's Disease Dementia by Assessing the Neuropsychiatric Symptoms with an SVM Regression Model.

In this study, we measured the convergence rate using the mean-squared error (MSE) of the standardized neuropsychological test to determine the severity of Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), which is based on support vector machine (SVM) regression (SVR) and present baseline data in order to develop a model to predict the severity of PDD. We analyzed 328 individuals with PDD who were 60 years or older. To identify the SVR with the best prediction power, we compared the classification performance (convergence rate) of eight SVR models (Eps-SVR and Nu-SVR with four kernel functions (a radial ba

Quantitative and semi-quantitative assessment of synovitis on MRI and the relationship with symptoms in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Synovitis in symptomatic knee OA (KOA) is common and is associated with joint symptoms. Optimal synovial measurement on MRI is, however, unclear. Our aims were to examine the relationship between MRI measures of synovitis and knee symptoms in symptomatic KOA. METHODS: Data from a randomized, multicentre, placebo-controlled trial (UK-VIDEO) of vitamin-D therapy in symptomatic KOA were utilized. Participants reported knee symptoms using WOMAC at baseline and annually. On contrast-enhanced (CE) MRI, synovial thickness was measured using established, semi-quantitative methods whilst s

Development of a Thai tool for assessing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: A confirmatory factor analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The early recognition and management of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are important to inform treatment decisions. Current BPSD screening tools are time-consuming and require advanced skills, limiting their application in routine clinical practice. An easier and quicker tool for use by nonphysician healthcare personnel is needed. METHODS: A 14-item, Thai-language, BPSD scoring system for dementia (BPSD-T) was developed, based on clinical surveys and modifications after a pilot study. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), BPSD-T, Thai Mental State E

Testing the specificity of interpretation biases in women with eating disorder symptoms: An online experimental assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive biases, such as memory, attention, and interpretation bias, are thought to play a central role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the interpretation bias is ED-specific or can be generalized to comorbid disorder-related threats in women with high levels of ED symptoms. METHOD: In an online study, we measured interpretation bias using the modified Sentence Word Association Paradigm (SWAP), comparing women with (n = 39) and without (sub)threshold eating disorders (n = 56). We assessed endorse

Bleeding assessment tools to predict von Willebrand disease: Utility of individual bleeding symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding assessment is part of the diagnostic workup of von Willebrand disease (VWD). Bleeding assessment tools (BATs) have standardized obtaining this information but have been criticized because they are time consuming. OBJECTIVE: To use our legacy data to determine which questions from BATs are the strongest predictors of a VWD diagnosis. PATIENTS/METHODS: Bleeding score data from 3 different BATs were used. Patients aged <12 years were excluded. Questions on BATs relate to different bleeding symptoms, and each symptom is scored by severity. Scores for each symptom were sorted

Prospective Assessment of Rhinovirus Symptoms and Species Recurrence in Children With and Without an Acute Wheezing Exacerbation.

To assess if the difference in species-specific immune response to RV-C correlates with a higher frequency of reinfection, shorter time to reinfection, or different symptom severity than infections with RV-A or RV-B. Forty-three patients were enrolled of which 34 were successfully tracked longitudinally over 3 months, with nasal swabs and symptom questionnaires provided every 2 weeks to identify rhinovirus (RV) strains and the concurrent symptomatology. No difference was found in the time to reinfection with an RV species between RV-C and RV-A or RV-B (p = 0.866). There was a trend toward more
