Responses of neurons in VPL and VPL-VL region of the cat to algesic stimulation of muscle and tendon.

1. The responses evoked by electrical stimulation of cutaneous and muscle nerves, by noxious and innocuous mechanical stimulation of muscle, tendon, and cutaneous tissues, and by intra-arterial (ia) injection of algesic substances (potassium, bradykinin) into arteries supplying the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle (GS) were studied in single neurons located in the ventroposterolateral nucleus (VPL) and in the transitional zone between VPL and the ventrolateral nucleus (VL) of cats lightly anesthetized with thiopenthal. Such chemical stimulation of the muscles has been shown to activate muscular gro

Lateral cervical nucleus in the cat: functional organization and characteristics.

1. The lateral cervical nucleus (LCN) was investigated with extracellular recordings in the anesthetized cat. A total of 556 LCN units were characterized; the locations of most of these were histologically verified. Half of these had receptive fields on the rostral third of the ipsilateral body surface including the face; 14% had fields on the thorax or abdomen, 33% had fields on the hindlimb or tail, and about 3% had receptive fields larger than one limb. 2. The LCN was observed to be somatotopically organized in experiments using angled microelectrode penetrations. Hindlimb units were dorsol

Direct accessory optic projections to the vestibulo-cerebellum: a possible channel for oculomotor control systems.

The nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) receives direct retinal projections in all classes of vertebrates. This nucleus is also known as the medial terminal nucleus of the accessory optic tract, or as the nucleus extomamillaris. Following a series of HRP injections into the uvula and flocculonodular lobe of pigeons, both large and small cells of the nBOR were labelled bilaterally with the marker. No significant transport of HRP to nBOR was observed following injections of more rostral folia of the posterior or anterior lobes of the cerebellum. In view of the prominence of the tract from ret

The thalamostriatal projection in the cat.

The organization of the projections from the intralaminar and other thalamic nuclei to the caudate nucleus (CD), putamen (PU), nucleus accumbens (Acc), and olfactory tubercle (TO) were examined in the cat by autoradiography after deposits of 3H-amino acids in individual thalamic nuclei and by retrograde cell labeling after intrastriatal deposits of wheat-germ-conjugated horseradish peroxidase. All of the rostral intralaminar nuclei, here considered to include the central lateral (CL), paracentral (PC), central medial (CeM), and rhomboid nuclei (Rh), project to the striatum. Projections closely…

Irregular jerky tremor, myoclonus, and thalamus: a study using low-frequency stimulation.

High-frequency thalamic stimulation alleviates tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET). The origin of thalamic myoclonus is unexplained and the effects of low-frequency thalamic stimulation on movement control are still unknown. We studied the effects of stimulation at a low frequency of 15 Hz in five drug-free patients (3 PD, 2 ET) 6 months after thalamic implantation of quadripolar electrodes (unilateral in four patients, bilateral in one patient). Clinical, electrophysiological, and videotaped assessment, using a monopolar 15 Hz frequency (3 V, 90 micros) stimulation cu

Thalamic, Hippocampal, and Amygdalar subregional volumetric alterations in neonates with isolated aEEG abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate volumetric changes in thalamic, hippocampal, and amygdala subregions in neonates with mild amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) abnormalities and no organic brain lesions. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled neonates delivered by forceps-assisted vaginal birth at our hospital between May 2020 and July 2024. As part of the institutional clinical protocol for this delivery cohort, aEEG monitoring, routine MRI, and an additional 3D T1-weighted sequence were performed after pediatrician recommendation and parental/legal guardian consent

Genoarchitecture and input-output organization of the mouse basal ganglia and thalamic parafascicular nucleus.

The basal ganglia comprise interconnected subcortical nuclei essential for motor control, learning, emotion and cognition, yet how cell types relate to their circuit organization remains elusive. Here we show that spatial patterns of transcriptomic cell types in the basal ganglia and thalamic parafascicular nucleus relate to module-organized cortical inputs in the mouse. By co-registering genoarchitectural and connectivity datasets to the common coordinate framework, we delineate distinct three-dimensional subdivisions of these nuclei. Analyses of anterograde and retrograde viral tracing data

Seizure outcomes after thalamic deep brain stimulation in drug-resistant epilepsy: How electrode location, device platform, and epilepsy subtype drive response-A systematic review with pooled analysis.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT), centromedian nucleus (CM), and medial pulvinar nucleus (PuM) has emerged as a neuromodulatory intervention for adults with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Despite growing clinical experience, no pooled analysis has integrated outcomes across all three thalamic targets. A PRISMA-compliant systematic search was conducted across PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases (January 2000-December 2025). Studies reporting seizure frequency reduction following thalamic DBS in ≥4 adults with DRE and ≥6 months of follow-up wer

Longitudinal brain functional connectivity changes induced by neurosurgical thalamotomy for tremor in Parkinson's disease: a preliminary study.

The hypothesis that the effectiveness of neurosurgical procedures in Parkinson's disease (PD) would be related to connectivity dysfunctions between the site of the stimulation and other brain regions is growing. This study aimed to assess resting-state functional connectivity between thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) and the rest of the brain before and after thalamotomy in PD. A 76-year-old right-handed woman with refractory tremor-dominant PD was selected as a candidate for left Vim radiosurgery thalamotomy. Clinical and motion sensor evaluation and brain resting-state functional M

Deep brain stimulation of the centromedian thalamic nucleus for the treatment of FIRES.

Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is a rare, life-threatening complication of febrile illness in previously healthy individuals followed by super-refractory status epilepticus. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been demonstrated to be a promising therapy for the treatment of intractable epilepsy. Here, we present a pediatric patient with FIRES whose seizures were mitigated by acute DBS of the bilateral centromedian thalamic nucleus (CMTN). This is a previously healthy 11-year-old female who presented emergently with altered mental status, fever, and malaise after 1 week of let

A single case of MRI-guided focused ultrasound ventro-oral thalamotomy for musician's dystonia.

Musician's dystonia (MD) is a type of focal hand dystonia that develops only while playing musical instruments and interferes with skilled and fine movements. Lesioning of the ventro-oral (Vo) nucleus of the thalamus (Vo-thalamotomy) using radiofrequency can cause dramatic improvement in MD symptoms. Focused ultrasound (FUS) can make intracranial focal lesions without an incision. The authors used MRI-guided FUS (MRgFUS) to create a lesion on the Vo nucleus to treat a patient with MD. Tubiana's MD scale (TMDS) was used to evaluate the condition of musical play ranging from 1 to 5 (1: worst, 5:

Deep brain stimulation of the thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus for Benedikt's syndrome mainly present as tremor: a long-term case observation.

Benedikt's syndrome (BS) is caused by the lesion in the midbrain and specifically manifests a series of symptoms, including ipsilateral third nerve palsy, contralateral tremor, hemiataxia, and hyperactive tendon reflexes. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for BS emerges as a new approach and achieves successfully results. We report a successful case report of thalamic ventral intermediate (VIM) nucleus DBS for a patient with BS. During follow-up of 3 years, DBS successfully control the tremor and greatly improve his living and working quality. We consider that VIM DBS may have sustained benefit for

Treatment of Wilson's disease motor complications with deep brain stimulation.

A considerable proportion of patients with Wilson's disease (WD) experience neurologic symptoms that are functionally disabling. The most common neurologic problems in advanced WD include dystonia and tremor. Medically refractory idiopathic dystonia and essential tremor (ET) have been successfully treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS), functional surgical therapy targeting the globus pallidus pars interna (GPi), or the ventral intermediate (Vim) thalamic nucleus. Even though the pathophysiology of tremor is different in WD and ET, available experience supports DBS targeting the Vim for WD

Bassoon-disruption slows vesicle replenishment and induces homeostatic plasticity at a CNS synapse.

Endbulb of Held terminals of auditory nerve fibers (ANF) transmit auditory information at hundreds per second to bushy cells (BCs) in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN). Here, we studied the structure and function of endbulb synapses in mice that lack the presynaptic scaffold bassoon and exhibit reduced ANF input into the AVCN. Endbulb terminals and active zones were normal in number and vesicle complement. Postsynaptic densities, quantal size and vesicular release probability were increased while vesicle replenishment and the standing pool of readily releasable vesicles were reduced. T

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of a severe heat stroke patient complicated with severe cerebellar ataxia.

A 78-year-old woman was admitted for severe heat stroke with brain damage. She was unconscious on arrival at the emergency room. Her armpit temperature was 42.0 degrees C and blood pressure was 76/25 mmHg. She was rapidly cooled and given intensive treatment. On magnetic resonance imaging, T1- and T2-weighted images showed no significant signals, but diffusion-weighted images demonstrated localized symmetrical injuries of the cerebellum and thalami. She gradually became conscious, but severe cerebellar ataxia persisted.

Ventral intermediate thalamic stimulation in complex tremor syndromes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We report on deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the ventral intermediate part of the thalamus in 4 patients with complex tremor syndromes, 2 classified as Holmes tremor (HT) and 2 as thalamic tremor (TT). RESULTS: Three out of 4 patients showed intraoperative improvement and underwent DBS implantation. One patient with TT without intraoperative improvement was not provided with an implant. A sustained beneficial effect was present after a follow-up ranging from 20 months to 7 years, although there was partial persistence of the intentional tremor and of proximal myoclonic-dyston
