Rejection of ticks from guinea pigs by anti-hapten-antibody-mediated degranulation of basophils at cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity sites: role of mediators other than histamine.

Previous studies have established that recruitment of basophils to sites of tick feeding in guinea pigs is required to effect immune resistance. In the current study, actively sensitized guinea pigs treated three times daily with H-1 (mepyramine) and H-2 (cimetidine) histamine receptor antagonists, during the challenge tick infestation period, expressed normal resistance to Amblyomma americanum larvae. Similarly, naive guinea pigs treated with anti-histamines four times daily, beginning 7 days before transfer of immune serum and tick challenge and continuing through the tick infestation period

Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens Associated with Dromedary Camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Northern Kenya.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are major constraints to camel health and production, yet epidemiological data on their diversity and impact on dromedary camels remain limited. We surveyed the diversity of ticks and TBPs associated with camels and co-grazing sheep at 12 sites in Marsabit County, northern Kenya. We screened blood and ticks (858 pools) from 296 camels and 77 sheep for bacterial and protozoan TBPs by high-resolution melting analysis and sequencing of PCR products. Hyalomma (75.7%), Amblyomma (17.6%) and Rhipicephalus (6.7%) spp. ticks were morphologically identified and con

Transmission of Babesia ovis by different Rhipicephalus bursa developmental stages and infected blood injection.

In this report, the transmission efficacy of Babesia ovis, the principal causative agent of ovine babesiosis, was studied by infestation of lambs with different Rhipicephalus bursa stages or by injection of infected blood. Infected blood injection induced acute babesiosis in splenectomized lambs, while only mild clinical signs were observed in intact animals. Both splenectomized and intact lambs developed high antibody titer, detectable for at least 180 days post infection. Infestation of splenectomized and intact lambs with infected tick larvae did not induce clinical babesiosis or specific s

First molecular detection of Babesia caballi in camel associated ticks in Uzbekistan, with no evidence of Anaplasma or Rickettsia.

Dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) have an important role in food and textile production in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, yet data on their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) is scarce, especially in Central Asia. This study aimed to: (i) identify the ticks infesting camels from different regions of Uzbekistan, (ii) molecularly detect TBPs in the collected ticks for the first time. In 2024, 290 camels from three regions (Karakalpakstan, Jizzakh, and Navoi) were examined for tick infestation. Ticks were collected, morphologically identified, pooled, and screened using PCR and sequencing

Reservoir role of lizard Psammodromus algirus in transmission cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Spirochaetaceae) in Tunisia.

To investigate the reservoir role of the lizard Psammodromus algirus for the Lyme disease spirochete, 199 lizards were trapped from April to October 2003 in El Jouza, northwestern Tunisia. In this site, the infection rate of free-living Ixodes ricinus (L.) by Borrelia was evaluated by immunofluorescence as 34.6% for adult ticks and 12.5% for nymphs. Eighty percent of P. algirus (117/146) captured during this study were infested by I. ricinus, the predominant tick species collected from lizards. The intensity of tick infestation of this host by larvae and nymphs ranged from 0.14 to 7.07 and fro

Basophils in skin reactions of mast cell-deficient mice infested with Dermacentor variabilis.

Acquired resistance to ticks in guinea pigs has been found to be associated with basophil-rich skin reactions. Mice, which are generally believed to possess few, if any basophils, also acquire resistance following repeated tick infestations and this has been found to be associated with increased numbers of dermal mast cells. Mast cell-deficient W/Wv mice have, however, also been shown capable of acquiring resistance after two infestations with Dermacentor variabilis larvae. In the studies described here, we have examined, with the electron microscope, skin reactions in W/Wv and +/+ mice underg…

Contact between soft tick vectors of African swine fever virus and invasive wild pigs in the southeastern USA.

BACKGROUND: African swine fever virus is a transboundary pathogen of high economic impact to the global pork industry. Florida has multiple factors that contribute to the high risk of introduction of African swine fever virus (ASFV) including high levels of commerce and human migration between Florida and Caribbean nations with ASFV, established backyard swine production, abundant populations of invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa), and the presence of a soft tick species (Ornithodoros turicata americanus) that has been found to be a competent vector of ASFV in laboratory experiments. Cotton rats and other small mammals as hosts for immature Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) in central Oklahoma.

Eight species of small mammals were evaluated as potential hosts for American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), in an upland, tallgrass prairie study site in central Oklahoma. Only hispid cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, and deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were found to be important hosts for immature D. variabilis. Although D. varibilis larvae and nymphs frequently infested both cotton rats and deer mice, cotton rats were the most important host species for both immature stages in the study area. Cotton rats constituted 63.2% of the total 530 small mammals captured and were hosts to

A systematic review of the occurrence of Hyalomma ticks associated with birds migrating between Africa and the Northern Hemisphere.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease endemic to Africa, Southern Europe, and Western Asia. Its main vectors, Hyalomma ticks, can spread to and possibly establish populations in non-endemic regions via migratory birds. METHODS: We summarized the association between migratory birds and Hyalomma ticks by analysing spatial and temporal patterns in tick prevalence and infestation intensity on migratory birds through a systematic review of studies conducted in Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa between 1954 and 2022. RESULTS: We reviewed 37 studies and

Re-emergence of Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in Kedougou, south-eastern Senegal in 2023: Epidemiological and zoological investigations of the first symptomatic human case.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonosis transmitted mainly by ticks. In Senegal, the CCHF virus has been circulating since at least 2003. However, the first symptomatic human case was detected and confirmed only in 2023 in the southeastern part of the country. Following this detection, a survey of humans, animals and ticks was launched to better characterize the ecology of this virus in this area. Human samples were tested by ELISA and RT-PCR. Serum and tick samples collected from cattle, sheep and goats were tested by ELISA and by RT-PCR, respectively. Antibodies against CCHFV we

Moxidectin pour-on for control of natural populations of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Acarina: Ixodidae).

Fifty Bos taurus x Bos indicus heifers naturally infested with Boophilus microplus ticks were divided into two groups of 25 heifers each. Individuals of one group were treated with moxidectin 0.5% pour-on at a dosage of 500 microg of moxidectin/kg body weight and heifers from the other group remained as untreated controls. An efficacy higher than 95% was found on days 7-21 after treatment by using female ticks 4.5-8.0 mm long as the main infestation parameter. A lower, but significant efficacy (p < 0.05) was also found on days 1 (32.3% efficacy) and 27 (73.4% efficacy) post-treatment. Signific

Amblyomma maculatum Feeding Augments Rickettsia parkeri Infection in a Rhesus Macaque Model: A Pilot Study.

Rickettsia parkeri is an emerging eschar-causing human pathogen in the spotted fever group of Rickettsia and is transmitted by the Gulf coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum. Tick saliva has been shown to alter both the cellular and humoral components of the innate and adaptive immune systems. However, the effect of this immunomodulation on Rickettsia transmission and pathology in an immunocompetent vertebrate host has not been fully examined. We hypothesize that, by modifying the host immune response, tick feeding enhances infection and pathology of pathogenic spotted fever group Rickettsia sp. In
