Is an accurate self-perceived health risk beneficial for patients to minimize prehospital delay time at onset of a ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI)?

High risk perception (HRP) is fundamental for adequate health behavior. However, its impact on rapid access to cardiac care after the onset of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is not known. Conflicting evidence exists about sources that promote HRP. Data on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of 588 AMI patients who participated in the Munich Examination of Delay in Patients Experiencing Acute Myocardial Infarction (MEDEA) study were collected at the bedside. Adjusted multivariate logistic regression models identified factors associated with HRP. Only 13.4% (n = 79) of patients had

Cortical activity is more stable when sensory stimuli are consciously perceived.

According to recent evidence, stimulus-tuned neurons in the cerebral cortex exhibit reduced variability in firing rate across trials, after the onset of a stimulus. However, in order for a reduction in variability to be directly relevant to perception and behavior, it must be realized within trial--the pattern of activity must be relatively stable. Stability is characteristic of decision states in recurrent attractor networks, and its possible relevance to conscious perception has been suggested by theorists. However, it is difficult to measure on the within-trial time scales and broadly distr

Move more, scroll less? Physical activity, smartphone use, and subjective body shape perception in adolescents: within-person associations in gender-stratified analyses.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective body shape perception is an important adolescent health issue linked to psychological well-being and weight related behaviors. This study examined within-person associations among subjective body shape perception, physical activity, and smartphone use separately among Korean adolescent boys and girls. METHODS: Using five-wave data from the Korean Youth Health Behavior Panel Survey (2019-2023), we estimated two-way fixed-effects models controlling for time-invariant individual characteristics and wave-specific factors. The analytic sample included 4,518 adolescents (bo

Behavioral and neural markers of visual configural processing in social scene perception.

Research on face perception has revealed highly specialized visual mechanisms such as configural processing, and provided markers of interindividual differences -including disease risks and alterations- in visuo-perceptual abilities that traffic in social cognition. Is face perception unique in degree or kind of mechanisms, and in its relevance for social cognition? Combining functional MRI and behavioral methods, we address the processing of an uncharted class of socially relevant stimuli: minimal social scenes involving configurations of two bodies spatially close and face-to-face as if inte

Perception of fluoroscopy last-image hold.

Last-image hold (LIH) is used in x-ray fluoroscopy systems as a convenience and dose savings feature. In the case of an image sequence, temporal filtering in the human visual system (HVS) reduces perceived noise. In the case of a constant, single image frame, this phenomenon is not present: the image looks noisier, and low-contrast objects disappear. Using low-contrast, stationary cylinder and disk phantoms in noise, perception of single frames are compared with that of conventional 30 acq/s continuous fluoroscopy (continuous). The dose of continuous is fixed at Q/acq, and the dose of single-f

Profiles and trajectories of impaired social cognition in people with Prader-Willi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: People with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) have a distinctive behavioral phenotype that includes intellectual disability, compulsivity, inattention, inflexibility and insistence on sameness. Inflexibility and inattention are at odds with the cognitive flexibility and attention to social cues needed to accurately perceive the social world, and implicate problems in social cognition. This study assessed two social cognition domains in people with PWS; emotion recognition and social perception. We identified changes in social cognition over an approximate two-year time period (M = 2.23

Influence of attention and predictive visual cue on motion perception and sickness in immersive virtual environment.

Relieving motion sickness and enhancing self-motion perception are required for the public application of immersive visual display system. The effects of user attention and predictive visual cue have been experimentally evaluated in this study. A viewpoint moving visual stimulus was applied to eighteen healthy adults. The subjective evaluation presumably suggested that a predictive visual cue enhances self-motion perception and relieves motion sickness at a same time.

Cosmetic eye modified to retain vision.

A patient with bilateral ocular injuries with hypotony and light perception vision was fitted with scleral shells modified to allow light to pass through the central 4-mm area. This modification, allowing the patient to retain light perception with the prosthesis in place, aided in the rehabilitation of this patient by encouraging his independent ambulation, providing clues to time, place, and direction, and offering an enhanced cosmetic effect.

Beware bisection: the direction of time-numerosity interactions depends on objective reference.

In time perception studies, one of the most commonly employed tasks across humans and animals is temporal bisection. In this task, subjects must classify intervals presented into "short" and "long" duration categories. Crucially, this classification can be done either in reference to explicitly learned "anchors", or in a "reference-free" mode in which no anchors are provided and the subject must use an implicit standard - the so-called "partition variant". Previous work has demonstrated identical performance and modeling between the anchored and partition variants leading to the conclusion tha…

Time, Control, and the Nervous System.

Because organisms are able to sense its passage, it is perhaps tempting to treat time as a sensory modality, akin to vision or audition. Indeed, certain features of sensory estimation, such as Weber's law, apply to timing and sensation alike. However, from an organismal perspective, time is a derived feature of other signals, not a stimulus that can be readily transduced by sensory receptors. Its importance for biology lies in the fact that the physical world comprises a complex dynamical system. The multiscale spatiotemporal structure of sensory and internally generated signals within an orga

Neural mechanisms for integrating time and visual velocity cues in a prediction motion task: An fNIRS study.

Human beings use accurate estimates of the time-to-collision of moving objects effortlessly in everyday life. In the laboratory, researchers typically apply prediction motion (PM) tasks to investigate motion processing. In the PM tasks, time structure refers to the ratio of travel time between the visible segment (first segment) and occluded segment (second segment). The condition of T = 1.0, which indicates that the time spent moving is the same across the two segments, is called equal time structure. The present study investigated the neural mechanisms of time and visual velocity information

Characterizing the temporal discrimination threshold in musician's dystonia.

The temporal discrimination threshold (TDT) has been established as a biomarker of impaired temporal processing and endophenotype in various forms of focal dystonia patients, such as cervical dystonia, writer's cramp or blepharospasm. The role of TDT in musician's dystonia (MD) in contrast is less clear with preceding studies reporting inconclusive results. We therefore compared TDT between MD patients, healthy musicians and non-musician controls using a previously described visual, tactile, and visual-tactile paradigm. Additionally, we compared TDT of the dystonic and non-dystonic hand and fi

Abnormal electrical brain responses to time deviance in beat deafness.

Humans have the spontaneous capacity to track the beat of music. Yet some individuals show marked difficulties. To investigate the neural correlates of this condition known as beat deafness, the cortical electric activity of ten beat-deaf adults, the largest cohort studied so far, as well as of 14 matched controls (Experiment 2), and 16 university students (Experiment 1) were examined. All were actively engaged in detecting anisochronous time-deviants in otherwise isochronous, metronome-like, sequences. As expected, participants with beat-deafness performed more poorly than controls; this beha

Impaired movement timing in neurological disorders: rehabilitation and treatment strategies.

Timing abnormalities have been reported in many neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). In PD, motor-timing impairments are especially debilitating in gait. Despite impaired audiomotor synchronization, PD patients' gait improves when they walk with an auditory metronome or with music. Building on that research, we make recommendations for optimizing sensory cues to improve the efficacy of rhythmic cuing in gait rehabilitation. Adaptive rhythmic metronomes (that synchronize with the patient's walking) might be especially effective. In a recent study we showed that adaptive m

Investigating the role of temporal processing in developmental dyslexia: Evidence for a specific deficit in rapid visual segmentation.

The current study investigates the role of temporal processing in the visual domain in participants with developmental dyslexia (DD), the most common neurodevelopmental disorder, which is characterized by severe and specific difficulties in learning to read despite normal intelligence and adequate education. Specifically, our aim was to test whether DD is associated with a general impairment of temporal sensory processing or a specific deficit in temporal integration (which ensures stability of object identity and location) or segregation (which ensures sensitivity to changes in visual input).

Contrast coding in the primary visual cortex depends on temporal contexts.

Contrast response function in the primary visual cortex (V1) has long been described as following a sigmoid curve. However, this is mainly based on measuring neural responses to drifting contrast grating in a stable stimulation, a model that does not consider the effects of motion or length of stimulus presentation. During natural viewing, the visual system can obtain sufficient information for identifying the shapes defined by contrast from a single glance; acquiring greater knowledge of the neuronal response properties to contrast in such a short timescale is necessary to understand the unde

The involvement of centralized and distributed processes in sub-second time interval adaptation: an ERP investigation of apparent motion.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the timing of brief stationary sounds affects visual motion perception. Recent studies have shown that auditory time interval can alter apparent motion perception not only through concurrent stimulation but also through brief adaptation. The adaptation after-effects for auditory time intervals was found to be similar to those for visual time intervals, suggesting the involvement of a central timing mechanism. To understand the nature of cortical processes underlying such after-effects, we adapted observers to different time intervals using either brief sound

Efficacy of temporal processing training to improve phonological awareness among dyslexic and normal reading students.

One of the leading theories for dyslexia suggests that it is the result of a difficulty in auditory temporal processing (ATP). This theory, as well as others, is supported by studies showing group differences and correlation between phonological awareness and ATP. However, these studies do not provide causal relationship. In the current study the authors aimed to test causal relationship between ATP and phonological awareness by comparing the performance of dyslexic and normal reader students in phonological awareness tasks before and after a short-term (5-day) training in either temporal proc
