BACKGROUND: With improvements in socioeconomic conditions and public health, kerion-type tinea capitis has become much less common in China. As a result, many pediatricians have limited exposure to this condition, leading to delays in diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. This article presents two cases of kerion-type tinea capitis treated at our hospital, summarizing their clinical manifestations, diagnostic journey, and therapeutic outcomes. We report the first case of a scalp pseudomycetoma due to Trichophyton schoenleinii in a 15-year-old girl from Senegal. The lesion was not associated with tinea capitis. Long-term antifungal therapy with itraconazole and terbinafine was unsuccessful but a favourable outcome was obtained after surgical removal of the lesion. Between 1973 and 1999, only 12 previous cases of dermatophyte pseudomycetoma of the scalp were reported in the literature. Clinical features and therapeutic outcomes of these cases are reviewed.

A case of dermatophytic pseudomycetoma, in a patient with a history of recurrent lesions in the scalp, for over two years, is reported. Histopathological examination of the affected tissues revealed the mycelial aggregates or pseudogranules characteristic of the disease. Cultures of fresh tissues samples detected a fungus identified as Trichophyton tonsurans. BACKGROUND: Microsporum gypseum is a geophilic dermatophyte that colonises keratinous substances in the soil. Fur-bearing animals carry this dermatophyte but are rarely infected. Human infection can be acquired from the soil, carrier or infected animals, and rarely other humans.
