Computed tomography (CT) and conventional radiography of the sacroiliac joint were compared in 43 patients. CT appeared to be far more sensitive and equally specific in the recognition of sacroiliitis. In a number of patients with sacroiliitis diagnosed by both techniques, CT demonstrated abnormalities that were not demonstrated by conventional radiographs. Of those patients with clinical evidence of sacroiliitis and HLA-B27 positivity, 50% had negative or equivocal radiographs compared to 19% who had negative computed tomographic images for sacroiliitis.

An evaluation was made of 1343 CT scans performed at The Princell Margaret Hospital using a 20-second body scanner. Six patient groups were defined according to the clinician's objective in ordering the scan, and to the relevance of symptoms to the region scanned. Computer-assisted analysis revealed that only by dividing patients into categories using three parameters (scan region, primary diagnosis and clinician's objective) did significant differences in the ratio of normal to abnormal CT scan results become apparent. Very specific groups of patients for whom CT is a low-yield procedure coul

Computer-assisted tomography of the chest is the most accurate technique in diagnostic imaging of tumoral disease of the mediastinum. It is also a reliable method of detecting lymphadenopathies and lung metastases, as well as any pathological process involving the pleura and the thoracic wall.

Many articles have discussed the anatomy and pathology of the orbits. Although this area is exquisitely visualized via computed tomography, the bulk of the visual apparatus lies behind the optic canal. A variety of pathologic conditions will manifest themselves by changes in the visual fields. This article demonstrates the normal anatomy of the visual pathways within the brain by CT scanning and correlates various changes that cause visual field defects.

Computed tomography (CT) easily and accurately demonstrates both the normal and abnormal adrenal gland. The normal adrenal gland can be seen in almost 95% of patients. With this technique, 29 of 29 proved adrenal masses were demonstrated; one case of bilateral adrenal hyperplasia could not be recognized, another showed equivocal enlargement. CT is an excellent screening and often definitive radiologic test of evaluating the adrenal gland.

Computed body tomography is an easily accomplished method that precisely displays the normal and pathologic anatomy of the retroperitoneal space. Suspected retroperitoneal disorders, which are often clinically confusing or obscure, can now be detected or excluded with remarkable accuracy. Few innovations in radiology have more effectively fulfilled such a conspicuous need.

Linear tomography was used in the investigation of recent wrist injuries. By providing greater bony detail than conventional radiographs it proved a useful aid in the study of the suspected wrist fracture, and in the differentiation of the old from the recent fracture of the scaphoid. Such additional information may affect the clinical management of the injury, for instance when an injury is shown to be longstanding.

Computed axial tomography represents a major advance in otolaryngology in the area of neuro-otology. Now that third and fourth generation scanners with their coned-down imagery are available with much better resolution, the scanner has become extremely useful in the entire field of otolaryngology. Major advantages of this technique are its noninvasive character and the absence of morbidity. This encourages its application to large numbers of patients with disorders at an early stage in the disease processes than was previously deemed prudent with other invasive diagnostic techniques. Intensive…

Routine lateral tomography of the temporomandibular joint has resulted in a three-fold increase in the detection of positive findings. The technique is easily accomplished, eliminates the problem of superimposition of unwanted structures, permits a true lateral view of the condyle and condylar fossa, and allows small articular surface abnormalities to be identified. Although the entrance skin dose to the patient's face in the beam is about two times greater per exposure than that for our previous conventional open and closed lateral views, we believe that the increased dose is reasonable and t…

Transerse axial tomography is a technique by which the spine is viewed radiographically in cross section. The tomographic apparatus, technique of examination, and radiation exposure will be discussed. Examples of normal and pathologic anatomy of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine will be presented. In the lumbar spine cross-sectional views of stenotic canals due to facetal hypertrophy, congenital stenosis, spondylolithesis, and ventral overgrowth of spine fusions will be demonstrated. Measurements of the sagittal and interpedicular distances on conventional x-rays have correlated poorly …

Computer tomography, a new noninvasive, rapid and easily tolerated technique of brain examination, has been evaluated by analysis of 1000 examinations. It is much more sensitive than conventional radiographic techniques and can resolve soft-tissue structures that differ only slightly in density. It also provides direct visualization of the ventricular system. The range of clinical applications is wide; it is especially useful in differentiating intracerebral hemorrhage from infarction, and in demonstrating many brain tumours, particularly supratentorial, though enhancement with a water-soluble…
