Three hundred and five patients with oropharyngeal carcinomas received linear accelerator radiation therapy at the Stanford University Medical Center between 1956 and 1973. All were staged by the TNM system, using the UICC Classification of 1962. Actuarial five year survival for patients with tonsil cancers ranged from 50% to 18% for those with T1 and T3 lesions, respectively. Several histological subtypes and grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are described in human literature and these subtypes have distinct morphological features and biological behaviour. OBJECTIVE: To raise the vigilance not to believe easily the diagnosis of a primary branchial cleft carcinoma.
METHODS: Four cases of cystic metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in the neck misdiagnosed as branchiogenic carcinoma from 1993 to 2002 in our hospital were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: The primary sites of these 4 cases were later discovered, 2 in the aryepiglottic fold, 1 in faucial tonsil and 1 in the skin of the head, respectively. The discovery of the primary sites ranged from the day of initial surgery to 41 months.
CONCLUSION: None of the cases reviewed in this study was

OBJECTIVES: To identify any prognostic factors that may be associated with the long-term survival of dogs diagnosed with tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC).
METHODS: The medical records of 15 dogs treated for TSCC were reviewed retrospectively. The signalment, presenting signs, clinical stage, treatments and outcome were documented.
RESULTS: The overall median survival time (MST) of the dogs in the study was 243 days. There was a 1-and 2-year survival of 40% and 20%, respectively. The results of initial staging had a significant effect on survival, as dogs with only one tonsil affected

When squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) involves the palatine tonsils, they are generally enlarged and demonstrate intermediate to high signal intensity on T2-weighted MR images and enhance after gadolinium administration. We have identified two patients with SCC of the tonsil where the affected tonsil has low signal intensity on T2-weighted MR images and is smaller than the contralateral normal tonsil. Follicular dendritic cell tumor (FDCT) usually arises in the dendritic reticulum cells of the lymph nodes. Extranodal cases are rare; only 24 cases have been reported in the head and neck region, and most are in the oropharynx. Three patients with dermatomyositis are reported, two of them had suffered from carcinoma of the nasopharynx and the last one suffered tonsillar carcinoma. The diagnosis the therapy, the prognosis and the relationship between dermatomyositis and malignancy were discussed in detail in this paper. The author emphasised that careful examination of the nose and pharynx would be very important for the patient with dermatomyositis.

A "branchial cyst" in a patient above 40 years old may turn out to be a malignant cystic nodal metastasis from a primary tumour in the tonsil. We present a case of a 45-year-old woman in whom an initial mistaken diagnosis of branchial cyst was made. The neck mass was discovered to be malignant and the left tonsil was subsequently implicated as the primary source. Older patients with cystic neck masses should be managed on the presumption that these may possibly be metastatic lesions from a primary oropharyngeal tumour.

Optimal management of patients with localized Waldeyer's ring (WR) lymphoma remains controversial due to the lack of randomized studies and heterogenous grouping of most reported series. In this retrospective study, we have evaluated the possible prognostic factors and treatment outcome of WR non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Between December 1993 and February 2000, 32 patients with WR lymphoma, stage I (11 patients) and stage II (21 patients) were treated. BACKGROUND: Metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) has never been reported. Its anatomic location may easily be mistaken for a retropharyngeal lymph node. We present the first case of SCC metastasis to the SCG.
METHODS: We report a case of a 69year-old never smoking male, who presented with right retropharyngeal PETCT-avid disease following chemoradiation for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. He was brought to the operating room for resection, intraoperative radiation and reconstruction.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide; the most common metastatic sites are lymph nodes, lung, liver, and brain. Tonsil metastases from breast cancer are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman with simultaneous occurrence of tonsillar and cervical lymph nodes metastases after a disease-free interval of 22 years.
