The article presents modern ideas about the etiology, pathogenesis, and features of the clinical picture of chronic tonsillar pathology. Specific attention is paid to the classification of chronic tonsillitis, in particular the classification of B.S. Preobrazhensky - V.T. Palchun. Data on modern methods for assessing the morphofunctional state of palatine tonsils, including immunohistochemical studies, are presented. Modern approaches to therapy are considered.

Lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC) is the most commonly encountered congenital neck pathology in the lateral part of the neck. A 66-year-old woman presented to the ENT clinic due to difficulty in swallowing persisting for approximately 1 year. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass at right tonsil. A rare case of a tonsillar neurofibroma in a 28-year-old Caucasian male is presented. Benign tumours of the tonsils are rare and of those reported, only a few are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumours (BPNSTs). This is the first report of a solitary neurofibroma of the palatine tonsil in the English literature.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours are aetiologically enigmatic, nosologically confusing and biologically unpredictable lesions. The lungs are the organs of apparent predilection. These tumours have also been documented in a number of extrapulmonary sites including the head and neck. So far only two cases of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the tonsil have been reported in the English literature. We document another case, occurring in a 41-year-old man with history of cadaveric renal transplant nine years ago. A comprehensive review of the literature is also presented.

The exact architecture of the normal nasopharyngeal tonsil remains obscure because most histopathologic investigations have been based on surgically removed adenoids. We compared enlarged adenoids and normal nasopharyngeal tonsils under both light and electron microscopes.
