Successful root coverage: a human histologic evaluation of a case.

Connective tissue grafts combined with pedicle grafts (subepithelial grafts) have been shown to be effective in obtaining root coverage. Unfortunately, little is known about the histology of the results in humans. This is a case report of a tooth with a recession defect that was treated with a subepithelial graft. Complete root coverage was obtained. However, at 5 months postoperative the tooth had to be extracted because of a vertical root fracture. With the patient's permission, a small collar of tissue was removed with the tooth. The sample was processed and evaluated histologically. The re

Esthetic and endodontic management of a deep crown-root fracture of a maxillary central incisor.

Treatment of trauma to anterior teeth should aim at preserving the affected teeth so as to restore function and esthetic appearance. Recently, patients have come to expect adequate esthetics immediately after trauma. In the present case, a deep crown-root fracture compromised the pulp and extended subgingivally on the palatal aspect. After using the fractured fragment as a provisional crown, the patient received conventional root canal treatment, which provided immediately satisfactory esthetic results and reliable short-term restoration of the crown-root fractured tooth. Rehabilitation of the

Treatment of Mandible Fractures Using a Miniplate System: A Retrospective Analysis.

Three-dimensional (3D) mini plate systems are used in the treatment of mandibular fractures. The system is advantageous in comparison to conventional plates due to the stabilization of tension and compression areas, improved initial stability, and biomechanical behavior. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the use of a 3D miniplate system for the treatment of patients with mandibular fractures. Patients with mandibular fractures treated with a 3D plate system at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Münster, during a period of 5 years, were inclu

Optical Coherence Tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive diagnostic technique providing cross-sectional images of biologic structures based on the differences in tissue optical properties. OCT has been widely used in numerous clinical applications and is becoming popular as a promising technology in dentistry. Today, dental hard (tooth) and soft (hard palate mucosa and gingiva mucosa) tissues are visualized with OCT. With new developments in technology, the applications of OCT are being investigated in various fields in dentistry, such as to detect microleakage around restoration, tooth cracks/frac

Traumatic intrusion of primary tooth: follow up until eruption of permanent successor tooth.

This paper presents a clinical case of a 2(1/2)-year-old boy who suffered dental trauma because of a fall from a bike. His father thought that the boy's central upper left incisor had been fractured. The clinical exam showed laceration of the upper maxillary frenum and a possible intrusion of the tooth, as the area was swollen. An upper maxillary occlusal X-ray confirmed the intrusion of the incisor. The procedure adopted was to wait for the re-eruption of the tooth. It was recommended that the boy stop using a pacifier and feeding bottle. The necessity of keeping the affected area clean was a

Tooth replantation as an alternative to dental implantology in adolescent patients.

A 16-years old female patient was referred to our observation in July 2006, 14 days after an accident, with traumatic intrusive luxation of the right upper central incisor that caused the nasal floor and buccal cortical bone fracture. While the extraoral examination showed the traumatic lesions of the upper lip, the intraoral examination revealed intrusive luxation, pain and high mobility of the tooth, and bleeding of the adjacent oral tissue. The treatment protocol consisted in surgical buccal bone removal, tooth extraction, retrograde root-canal filling, and tooth repositioning in occlusion

Effect of posterior implant restorations on adjacent teeth and tissues: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental implants are an artificial substitute for extracted or missing teeth in the oral cavity and are valuable for improving dental health and quality of life. While many studies on implants can be found, few studies examine their effects on adjacent teeth and tissues. The study aimed to examine complications of teeth adjacent to dental implants in the posterior region. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, clinical data of patients treated with implants in the posterior segment were extracted from the medical records in a single community dental clinic between Jan

Fabrication of a customized tray for preventing fracture of isolated abutment teeth in definitive casts.

Isolated abutment teeth with advanced bone resorption on definitive casts for a partial removable dental prosthesis can fracture when the definitive cast is removed from the impression or during subsequent laboratory procedures. This report describes a technique that avoids fracture of the definitive cast during its fabrication. A separating line is formed on the custom tray, which enables removal of the definitive cast without fracturing the isolated tooth. In addition, if the cervical line is sharp and appears compromised, then the impression can be trimmed at the clinical cervical line to e

Surgical extrusion of a crown-root fractured immature permanent incisor: 36 month follow-up.

Crown-root fracture is defined as a fracture involving enamel, dentin and pulp and can be classified as either complicated or uncomplicated. The tooth with crown-root fracture presents a lot of problems during coronal restorations and extraction was formerly used in many cases. But loss of a permanent incisor in a young patient may create severe emotional problems and alternative treatment approaches must be considered. This report presents the successful results of a surgical extrusion of a complicated crown-root fractured, immature permanent incisor in a 9-year-old boy. Examination 36 months

Correction of esthetic and biomechanical outcomes after maxillary anterior single dental implant fracture: a case report.

Rehabilitation of the single anterior tooth in the esthetic region after a dental implant fracture requires management of contributing biomechanical and/or biological etiologic factors. The multidisciplinary treatment of a fractured maxillary anterior single dental implant with a staged, combined surgical and prosthetic approach is discussed. Alleviation of several, but not all, risk factors eliminated the need for replacement of gingiva with pink porcelain and maintained a stable post implant host complex.

Adhesive fragment reattachment after orthodontic extrusion: a case report.

In the treatment of crown fractures, adhesive fragment reattachment provides a good alternative to other restorative techniques, offering several advantages. The present paper reports a case in which the treatment of a cervical crown fracture was accomplished by reattaching the tooth fragment with a flowable resin composite. Orthodontic root extrusion was performed with a modified Hawley appliance prior to fragment reattachment. The clinical and radiographic results after 2.5 years were successful.

Forced eruption: review and case reports.

When developing a diagnosis and prognosis for a compromised anterior tooth, dentists often deem these teeth to be nonrestorable or hopeless without exploring some of the less common options for saving the tooth. This article reviews literature concerning forced eruption as a treatment alternative, discusses treatment planning considerations, and presents two cases in which forced eruption was used. The first case involves a deeply fractured central incisor; the second case deals with a periodontally involved central incisor that was used to prepare its own extraction site for implant placement

Tooth bleaching: its effect on oral tissues.

After investigating the literature, we suggest these guidelines for tooth bleaching: If bleaching solutions of high concentration are used, prevent accidental exposure of gingival tissues to the solutions by use of a rubber dam. If using lower concentrations of bleaching solutions, avoid long-term exposures to gingival tissues. To maintain pulp vitality, keep bleaching time and temperatures to a minimum. Check teeth for exposed dentin and enamel fractures. Advise patients that thermal sensitivity may occur after the bleaching procedure and may persist for several days. Prescribe premedication

Dental sepsis.

Dental sepsis or periapical abscess formation constitutes a large percentage of dental conditions that afflict horses. Dental sepsis occurs when the pulp chamber of the tooth is exposed to the oral cavity or external environment, allowing bacterial localization with resulting infection. Although acute, primary, septic pulpitis in horses is rare, dental sepsis often results from colonization of the pulp chamber with pathogenic bacteria secondary to maleruption or impaction of teeth with secondary alveolar bone lysis, primary fractures of the tooth, mandible, or maxilla, periodontal disease, or
