A study of human jaw movements deduced from scratches on occlusal wear facets.

In a previous investigation, scratches on tooth wear facets provided information about functional movements of the mandible in the occlusal range. Depending on the type of facet observed, two or three main directions were found. The aim now was to answer two questions: (1) how long does it take for a newly formed scratch to disappear? and (2) do the observed orientations of the scratches change over a long period of time? Eleven wear facets from lower first molars were analysed in four subjects with good natural dentition. Scratches recorded on cellulose replicas were observed under an interfe…

Equine cheek teeth occlusal fissures: Prevalence, association with dental wear abnormalities and occlusal angles.

BACKGROUND: Fissures of the occlusal surface of equine cheek teeth are commonly encountered during oral examination but their aetiology is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence and characteristics of occlusal fissures in cadaver teeth. It is hypothesised that their prevalence is influenced by masticatory forces. Consequently, their possible association with wear disorders and occlusal angles were examined. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: The dental abnormalities and occlusal fissure findings in the cheek teeth of 143 cadaver heads were recorded. The cheek teeth occlu

Combined effects of ageing and type 2 diabetes mellitus on human dental mechanics.

Dental collagen, a protein subject to essentially zero turnover, is highly susceptible to the accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) due to elevated blood glucose in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Progressive loss of collagen's structural stability likely increases the risk of tooth decay and fracture complicating the proper fixation of dental restorations. Our study aimed at investigating the structural and mechanical alterations in T2DM-affected teeth by measuring the stiffness and detecting micro-traumas and fractures. By using computed tomography (CT) and static compressi

Oral rehabilitation of a child with primary failure of tooth eruption.

This article describes the prosthetic evaluation and treatment of a 10-year-old female patient with primary failure of tooth eruption. This case is unique in that the failure of eruption affected both the deciduous and permanent dentition in all quadrants, in the absence of any other systemic abnormalities. After diagnostic articulation and a thorough discussion of the treatment with the patient and her parents, complete maxillary and mandibular overdentures were fabricated. The process followed with this preadolescent patient to ensure maximum compliance, success, and encouragement toward a p

The role of collagen cross-linker in dentin mineralization: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Dentin remineralization is a complex process that involves the crystallization of exposed collagen to restore the mechanical properties of demineralized dentin. It plays an essential role in managing dental caries and erosive tooth wear. Collagen cross-linkers have emerged as a promising strategy to enhance the stability of exposed collagen while facilitating mineral deposition. This scoping review evaluated the role of collagen cross-linkers in dentin remineralization. DATA: This scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. SOURCES: The databases Medline, Sc…

Combined Surgical and Restorative Procedures to Treat Maxillary Canine with Gingival Recession and Cervical Wear.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession (GR) with cervical tooth wear is a major concern for patients on the prominent maxillary canines, from both esthetic and dentine hypersensitivity points of view. Hypersensitivity could be treated nonsurgically; however, esthetics remain the major patients' concern that mostly requires surgical intervention for covering the denuded root surface. Several surgical procedures are applied successfully for covering single and multiple gingival recession; however, these procedures are sensitive procedures and not always predictable. Semilunar coronally repositioned fl…

Rehabilitation of the facial aesthetics of a patient with an abnormal occlusal plane as a consequence of perennial bruxism.

This study aims to present a clinical case of rehabilitating facial aesthetics in a patient with a disturbed occlusal plane due to years of practicing occlusal parafunction. The patient, aged 41, came to see a dentist because of significant tooth wear and a desire to improve aesthetics. The patient's reduced occlusal height resulted in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and abnormal masticatory muscle tension. The patient's treatment was planned in two stages. The first stage was to create a Michigan relaxation splint with a recommendation to wear it for a period of 3 months. The next sta…

The Absence of Claudin-10 in the Enamel Organ Alters Its Integrity.

Rare disorders related to tight junction (TJ) proteins have been associated with amelogenesis imperfecta. Pathogenic variants of CLDN10, encoding claudin-10b, a cation transport pore, cause the autosomal recessive HELIX syndrome (Hypohidrosis, Electrolyte imbalance, hypoLacrymia, Ichthyosis, Xerostomia). Patients exhibit salivary dysfunction and rapid enamel wear after tooth eruption. Since Cldn10 is expressed in the dental epithelium, this study explores the role of claudin-10b in amelogenesis. We analyzed amelogenesis in constitutive and conditional Cldn10 knockout (KO) murine models, compar

[Only a denture sore? Causes of a possible denture sore from a maxillary complete denture].

This case presentation documents the treatment sequence of a 74 years old patient who complained about a sore spot of the palatal mucosa underneath the complete denture. The intraoral examination revealed a dark spot, redness and swelling of the mucosa around this spot and halitosis. The mucosa exhibited a perforation of 3 x 10 mm in diameter. A radiographic 3-D picture showed an impacted canine tooth, which was partly covered by the palatal bone. Firstly the denture base was relieved and the swelling gradually disappeared. Then a biopsy was taken for histological analysis to exclude any malig

[Age-Related Changes in Occlusion and the Clinical Management and Prevention Strategies].

Occlusion refers to the contact relationship between the upper and lower teeth. Its biomechanical properties influence motor function, most … ch between natural and artificial teeth, which may lead to increased risk of occlusal interference. Tooth wear is the most common manifestation of age-related changes in occlusion. In addition to malocclusion, missing teeth, and pre-existing prostheses, many older patients also present with periodontal disease. Prolonged failure to replace missing teeth may …
