Perinatal Care for Persons with Dissociative Disorders.

Caring for persons with mental health diagnoses can be daunting, especially when the conditions are rare, and there is little evidence to guide nursing practice. There is minimal information about caring for persons with dissociative disorders beyond the behavioral health literature, much less as in obstetric context. Women are more likely to experience dissociative disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders than men. Severe maternal morbidity is significantly more common in women with a history of stress and trauma-related conditions, highlighting the importance of providing guidance for c

The experience of hospitalization and restraint of women who have a history of childhood sexual abuse.

Within psychiatric settings, many female clients report experiences of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). In this paper we explore the experience of 10 women who were hospitalized in psychiatric settings, restrained, and given forced medication (FM). All the women have histories that included CSA. Some authors have suggested that the experience of psychiatric hospitalization may represent an event that reenacts the experience of trauma. The results suggest that from the perspective of these women, the experience of restraint engendered traumatic emotional reactions such as fear, anxiety, and rage,

The cost of outpatient venous thromboembolism prophylaxis following lower limb injuries.

This paper reports the cost of outpatient venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis following 388 injuries of the lower limb requiring immobilisation in our institution, from a total of 7408 new patients presenting between May and November 2011. Prophylaxis was by either self-administered subcutaneous dalteparin (n = 128) or oral dabigatran (n = 260). The mean duration of prophylaxis per patient was 46 days (6 to 168). The total cost (pay and non-pay) for prophylaxis with dalteparin was £107.54 and with dabigatran was £143.99. However, five patients in the dalteparin group required nurse admini

Associations of Trauma Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms With Venous Thromboembolism Over 22 Years in Women.

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been linked to myocardial infarction and stroke in women, with biological and behavioral mechanisms implicated in underlying risk. The third most common cardiovascular illness, venous thromboembolism (VTE), is a specific health risk for women. Given previous associations with other cardiovascular diseases, we hypothesized that high levels of trauma and PTSD symptoms would be associated with higher risk of incident VTE in younger and middle-aged women. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used proportional hazards models to estimate

Evolution of global hip fracture nursing care (2000-2025): A dual-modal study integrating bibliometrics and biomarker-informed precision nursing frameworks.

BACKGROUND: As global hip fracture care transitions toward more integrated paradigms, clinical practice continues to face significant heterogeneity, particularly at the intersection of orthopedic trauma and psychiatric sequelae-the "brain-bone axis." METHODS: This study employs a dual-modal analytical approach: first, a bibliometric analysis of 1799 publications (2000-2025) was performed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-Bibliometrix to delineate the global knowledge structure; second, exploratory bioinformatic analysis was conducted by intersecting hip fracture and depression gene sets with

Posttraumatic growth in women who have experienced the loss of their spouse or partner.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a spouse or long-term partner has a significant impact on a woman's well-being; psychological, physical, social, spiritual, and economic. Women dealing with loss are faced with numerous stressors which place them at risk for a variety of health challenges. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of women who have lost their spouse or partner to death using the theoretical framework of posttraumatic growth (PTG) developed by Tedeschi and Calhoun. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with semi-structured interviews of 15 widows.

"The great escape": how an incident of elopement gave rise to trauma informed palliative care for a patient experiencing multiple disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: This case report from Scotland, UK illustrates how unresolved traumatic experiences across the life course can affect a patient's engagement with palliative care and offers insights into the flexibility and adaptations necessary for taking a trauma informed approach to care for an individual experiencing multiple disadvantage. Trauma informed care is a cornerstone in the pursuit of equitable palliative care, particularly for those facing multiple disadvantage, as it acknowledges the impact of past traumas on current healthcare experiences, and fosters an environment of understandin

Biology of memory and childhood trauma.

Examples have been presented of children's behaviors that demonstrate the trauma-learning pattern of re-enactment, repetition, and displacement. They become persistent parts of the symptom complex of PTSD. The encapsulation phase occurs when the trauma event occurs and symptoms present themselves, but the events as yet are undisclosed. The trauma-specific behavior patterns, the general hyper-arousal symptoms, and the avoidant, numbing symptoms persist; the emerging disruptive behaviors are not linked to the traumatic event and reactions to the trauma. The response of the child's social and int

Early referral of trauma patients to dedicated trauma psychology service: An observational study screening for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

BACKGROUND: The screening of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression after an injury is essential for improving the patient's quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of PTSD and depression screening and the early referral to the trauma psychology service at a level 1 trauma center. We hypothesized that as the screening process becomes more established as a standard of care, compliance with screening would improve. Furthermore, early referral of trauma patients to a dedicated psychologist within the trauma care system would be beneficial. METHODS: This ret

A Critical Review: Moral Injury in Nurses in the Aftermath of a Patient Safety Incident.

BACKGROUND: To date, there has been no published work towards understanding or classifying patient safety incidents (PSIs) or their aftermath as potential morally injurious experiences (pMIEs). A morally injurious experience is one that violates deeply held moral values and beliefs, and can put an individual at risk for burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other trauma-related problems. This can also set the stage for moral injury, which can occur when there has been a betrayal of what is right by someone in a position of legitimate authority, or by one's self, in a high-stakes situati

Beyond Necrosis: Early Recognition of Xylazine-Associated Wounds in Emergency Nursing Practice.

Xylazine has emerged as a common adulterant in the illicit drug supply and is increasingly associated with severe skin and soft tissue complications. Existing literature has largely focused on advanced wound presentations characterized by extensive tissue necrosis, hospitalization, and surgical intervention. Although these presentations are clinically significant, they may not reflect the full spectrum of xylazine-associated wounds encountered in emergency nursing practice. Early-stage lesions may present as subtle findings, including superficial ulcerations, papules, pustules, bumps, or multi

Factors preceding occupational distress in emergency nurses: An integrative review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This integrative review aimed to synthesise current evidence on the factors that precede and contribute to the occupational distress of emergency nurses. BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses practice within an environment challenged by demand exceeding capacity, an inability of staffing to meet this demand in addition to limited resources which contribute to form a unique risk to clinician and patient safety. The risk of occupational distress, while demonstrated across specialties, is noted to be highest in emergency nurses with subsequent impacts for clinicians, organisations an
