BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease, which rapidly leads to chronic respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Currently, forced vital capacity (FVC) < 50% is considered as physiologic marker for admitting patients to Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV) intervention, although it has been recently shown the median survival of patients with baseline FVC < 75% much shorter than median survival of patients with baseline FVC > 75%, independently by any treatment.

A case of Gollop-Wolfgang syndrome is reported in which an alternative treatment to amputation was chosen. The patient had the classical Y-shaped femur and total tibial agenesis. The recommended treatment in absence of extensor apparatus is knee disarticulation but the parents refused amputation. An alternative treatment was proposed to allow the child to walk. Tibialisation of the fibula and foot positioning under the fibula was performed with good functional result.

In 48 years old men with microspherocytosis constantly refusing splenectomy an experimental embolisation of the spleen artery with Spongostan was performed. 5 years of follow-up confirm the efficiency of this method of management. INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer with increasing prevalence in the last years. The most important risk factor for development of BCC is exposure to UV radiation. Surgical excision remains the first line treatment, but there are some non-surgical methods of treatment. Pemphigus vegetans was diagnosed in a 12-year-old boy based on clinical, histopathological and immunohistological findings. To our knowledge, this is the first case of juvenile pemphigus vegetans to be published in the literature. Suggested treatment with prednisone and azathioprine was refused, and the patient was treated with a decoction of herbs prescribed by a practitioner of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. This treatment gave excellent results. Possible active components of the treatment are discussed.
