The foodborne intestinal trematode Fasciolopsis buski causes the neglected zoonotic disease fasciolopsiasis. We detected F. buski infection in 14 pediatric patients in Sitamarhi, Bihar, and in pigs in Sivasagar, Assam, India. Proper diagnostic methods and surveillance are urgently needed to accurately estimate the true burden of this disease in India.

Bilharzia or schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease due to infestation by a hematophagous trematode of the genus Schistosoma. It is the second most frequent parasitic endemic in the world after malaria. The most frequent tissue infections are intestinal and genitourinary. Testicular localizations of schistosoma are very rare. When lesions become chronic, they present as non-specific masses, bilharziomas, posing enormous problems of differential diagnosis with other benign and malignant pathologies, which impacts management. We report a case of epididymal schistosomiasis in a 37 years old patie

Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic parasitic disease caused by blood flukes (trematode worms) of the genus Schistosoma. Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum) infection has decreased significantly in prevalence and intensity of infection in China. However, this disease still remains a serious public health problem in some endemic areas of the Philippines and Indonesia. Thus, more accurate and sensitive methods are much needed for further control of this disease. Here, we review the research progress in techniques for the diagnosis of S. japonicum infection.

Endemic to over 70 countries and resulting in 200 million infected individuals and 500,000 deaths each year, the Schistosoma trematode worm can result in multisystem morbidity. Bowel obstruction secondary to this parasite has previously been described, but we report the first case of schistosomiasis affecting the sigmoid colon and resulting in perforation in a male positive for human immunodeficiency virus.

Fascioliasis is a foodborne trematode endemic worldwide. Children under 15 years have the highest prevalence of infection. We hypothesized that acute fascioliasis would be associated with more pronounced cytokine changes than in chronic disease or no helminth infections. To test this hypothesis, 33 children who lived in the Peruvian highlands were classified into 3 groups: acute fascioliasis, chronic fascioliasis, and no helminth infection. Type Th1, Th2, and Th17 cytokines were measured in plasma by cytometric bead array. Children with acute infection had higher levels of IL-5 and IL-17 compa

For parasites that require multiple hosts to complete their development, genetic interplay with one host may impact parasite transmission and establishment in subsequent hosts. In this study, we used microsatellite loci to address whether the genetic background of snail intermediate hosts influences life-history traits and transmission patterns of dioecious trematode parasites in their definitive hosts. We performed experimental Schistosoma mansoni infections utilizing two allopatric populations of Biomphalaria glabrata snails and assessed intensities and sex ratios of adult parasites in mouse

Opisthorchis viverrini is an important food-borne trematode in Southeast Asia. The infection causes significant morbidity in terms of hepatobiliary diseases and cholangiocarcinoma. The aim of this study was to improve the sensitivity of the PCR-based diagnosis of O. viverrini infection. A new fecal DNA extraction protocol for the detection of O. viverrini DNA using cetyltrimethyl-ammoniumbromide to remove PCR inhibitor was used and compared with the commercial stool kit method. The sensitivity of the new test was 79.3%, compared with the 44.8% of the previous method (P < 0.01). PCR-positive te

Adult specimens of Echinochasmus caninus n. comb. (Verma, 1935) (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) (syn. Episthmium caninum Yamaguti, 1958) were recovered from 11 riparian people who resided along the Mekong River in Khammouane Province, Lao PDR. In fecal examinations done by the Kato-Katz technique, the cases revealed eggs of Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes, hookworms, and in 2 cases echinostome eggs. To recover the adult helminths, praziquantel 30-40 mg/kg and pyrantel pamoate 10-15 mg/kg in a single dose were given and purged with magnesium salts. Various species of trematodes (i

A survey of intestinal helminths was undertaken in riparian people in Xieng Khouang Province, Lao PDR. Fecal specimens were collected from 643 people (289 males and 354 females) residing in 4 districts (Nonghet, Kham, Phoukout, and Pek) and were examined by the Kato-Katz technique. The overall helminth egg positive rate was 41.2%, and hookworms revealed the highest prevalence (32.7%) followed by Trichuris trichiura (7.3%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (5.6%). The positive rate for small trematode eggs (STE), which may include Opisthorchis viverrini, heterophyids, and lecithodendriids, was 4.4%. For

Fishborne zoonotic trematodes (FZTs) pose a food safety risk for the aquaculture industry in Vietnam. The risk of being infected from eating raw fish applies not only to humans but also to domestic animals which can serve as reservoir hosts in fish farms. The role of rodents, commonly found in fish farms, as reservoir hosts has not been adequately evaluated. To study this question, commensal and rice field rats were collected from fish farms in Nghia Lac and Nghia Phu communes, Nam Dinh province, Vietnam and examined for FZT infection. A total of 250 rats (Rattus norvegicus, Rattus argentivent

In recent years, a collapse in Donax trunculus fishing yields has occurred in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Basin). There is little information available on the impact disease may have had on D. trunculus populations. For the first time, a pathological survey was performed on the natural beds of the bivalve on the Campania and Lazio coasts, western Italy. Detected pathogens and related diseases were analysed, and their prevalence and mean intensity values were calculated. Viral particles, Chlamydia-like organisms, ciliates, coccidians, microcells and trematodes were observed. An unknown ci

Amphimerus sp. is a fluke that dwells in the biliary tracts of vertebrate definitive hosts including humans, domestic, and wild mammals in Latin America. Opisthorchiid liver infections are rarely studied in the Americas confirming its status as a neglected tropical disease. In Ecuador, small trematode eggs were reported in human cases from the province of Manabí in 1949, and recently, Amphimerus sp. adults were recovered from human and reservoir hosts in the province of Esmeraldas. Due to the lack of research on the infectious sources of Amphimerus sp. in the continent, we have developed a ser

Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) is an intestinal trematode, broadly employed to study the host-dependent mechanisms that govern the evolution of intestinal helminth infections. Resistance against E. caproni homologous secondary infections has been reported in mice and appears to be related to the generation of a local Th2 response, whereas Th1 responses promote the development of chronic primary infections. Herein, the ability of E. caproni to modulate its secretome according to the host environment is investigated. A two-dimensional differential in gel electrophoresis (2D-DI

Various marine parasites exploit marine mammals as definitive hosts; however, comprehensive parasitological studies remain lacking because of the inherent challenges in host sampling. This study aimed to investigate the pathological effects of Campula oblonga on the hepatobiliary system of the narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis). We detected a digenean species, C. oblonga, in the hepatobiliary systems of 143 out of 196 (72.96 %) narrow-ridged finless porpoises stranded, bycaught or drifting along the Korean coastline between 2016 and 2024. The morphological analysis co

Global warming is widely recognized as a key driver of current and future changes in marine ecosystems. Parasitic trematodes are highly sensitive to temperature changes, which can lead to drastic impacts on surrounding communities. Copiatestes spp. (Family Syncoelidae) are relatively little-known trematodes with atypical life cycles that have been associated with a mass mortality event of seabirds in the Chatham Islands. As they forage at sea, seabirds get their legs tangled with the sticky, free-living infective stages of Copiatestes, which impairs their ability to take off and land. We teste

Parasitic infections adopt a rather low profile in the highly urbanized setting in Singapore. Very few food-borne parasitic infections are encountered. Apart from a few reports of infections with Clonorchis/Opisthorchis, Taenia spp. and hydatid disease, there are no other citations of such helminthic infections. Seroprevalence surveys have shown the presence of toxoplasmosis in local meat animals (sheep, pigs and cattle) and Toxoplasma strains have been isolated from the pig, tree shrew (Tupaia glis), slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) and guinea pigs. Human toxoplasmosis is prevalent in Singapor

Ascocotyle longa is parasitic trematode with wide distribution throughout America, Europe, Africa, and Middle East. Despite the fact that this fish-borne pathogen has been considered an agent of human heterophyiasis in Brazil, the molecules involved in the host-parasite interaction remain unknown. The present study reports the proteome profile of A. longa metacercariae collected from the fish Mugil liza from Brazil. This infective stage for humans, mammals and birds was analyzed using nLC-MS/MS approach. We identified a large repertoire of proteins, which are mainly involved in energy metaboli
