Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is the clinical manifestation of an uncommon group of skin disorders. One postulated etiology is disseminated intravascular coagulation from release of thrombogenic maternal arising from placental injury or fetal demise. A Siberian kindred with spinocerebellar ataxia genetically linked to the SCA1 locus on chromosome 6p has been screened for the CAG triplet expansion within the coding region of the SCA1 gene. The kindred includes 1,484 individuals, 225 affected and 656 at risk, making this collection the largest spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) pedigree known. For the first time we report on an intact and ongoing triplet pregnancy after intracytoplasmatic sperm injection of cryopreserved testicular sperm. Indication was azoospermia due to hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. Neonates of 34 triplet pregnancies were admitted to our neonatal unit over a twelve-year period (1983 to 1995), with an incidence of 1 out of 812 deliveries. Thirty (88%) of the pregnancies were the result of ovulation induction and artificial fertilization: artificial insemination from husband (n = 3), in vitro fertilization (n = 9), and gamete intra-fallopian transfer (n = 6). In this paper, we describe the outcome of 33 triplet pregnancies referred to us between 1985 and 1990. They were managed as follows: management at home as soon as the diagnosis was made, then hospitalization at 28 weeks' gestation. Progesterone and beta-mimetics were administered daily, a cesarean section was always performed. One late abortion occurred at 21 weeks. Anencephaly in triplets and pergonal induced pregnancies is a very rare incident. Associated cleft lip and palate has never been reported in these case.
