BACKGROUND/AIM: Healthcare-associated meningitis (HCAM) is a relatively rare entity with significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to systematically review the Turkish medical literature for acute nosocomial meningitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One national (ULAKBİM) and two international (www.scopus.com and www.pubmed.com) databases were searched. In addition, abstracts of four national congresses held between 2004 and 2013 were searched for reports for HCAM meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a genetically based multisystemic disorder. We aimed to make a comprehensive evaluation of multisystem involvement in AT by describing clinical features and outcome of 91 patients.
METHODS: Medical records of the patients who were diagnosed and followed by a multidisciplinary approach during a 27-year period (1988-2015) were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Forty six female and 45 male patients with a mean follow-up period of 39.13±4.28 months were evaluated. The mean age at the time of symptom onset and diagnosis were 15.4±1.09 months and 73.61±4.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa, results from infestation of the conjunctiva by the larval form of Oestrus ovis. It is usually seen in rural areas. We report a case with ophthalmomyiasis externa in a young man living in an urban area (Istanbul, Turkey) who had no known history of traveling to the rural area. Even in patients living in urban areas ophthalmomyiasis externa should be taken into consideration in differential diagnosis of red eye.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous in hot and cold water distribution systems. With molecular typing methods it was shown that water can be the source of colonization and infection with NTM. We conducted a case-control study to evaluate risk factors for cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum outbreaks in villages in the Cukurova region, South Anatolia, Turkey. 282 respondents from eight villages were interviewed using structured questionnaires. We identified Dobrava-Belgrade virus infection in Turkey (from a strain related to hantavirus strains from nearby countries) in a patient who had severe symptoms leading to panhypopituitarism, but no known risk for hantavirus. Our findings emphasize the need for increased awareness of hantaviruses in the region and assessment of symptomatic persons without known risk factors for infection.

We undertook a cross-sectional survey of 116 patients at Dicle Hospital, Turkey, who had with bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis (TB). The infection rate of Enterobius vermicularis was investigated in 1,070 preschool children aged 5-7 years in Kayseri, Turkey by cellotape anal swab from May-September 2005. The children's parents were asked to complete questionnaires inquiring into the potential risk factors involved. The overall egg positive rate for E. vermicularis was 5.1%. The infection rate among boys and girls was similar. The association between family size, household income/month, education level of the parents, employment status of the mother and enterobiasis were found to be significant.
