Infection of chimpanzees with the Uganda I/CDC strain of Plasmodium malariae.

Nine splenectomized chimpanzees were infected with the Uganda I/CDC strain of Plasmodium malariae. Two had no history of previous malarial infection, whereas 6 had been infected with P. vivax and 1 with P. vivax and P. ovale. The animals with no previous infection had maximum parasitemias of 8,740 and 10,800/mm3. The other animals had maximum parasite counts of 930-75,700/mm3. Anopheles freeborni, An. stephensi, An. dirus, An. maculatus, An. quadrimaculatus, An. culicifacies, An. arabiensis, and An. gambiae were readily infected by feeding through membranes on heparinized blood from these anim…

Predicting neurodevelopmental delay among two-year-old infants in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Data on neurodevelopmental disabilities in sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. Identifying children at the highest risk of neurodevelopmental delay could enable health workers to target these groups more effectively, improve resource allocation and programmatic focus. OBJECTIVE: To develop and assess a model for predicting neurodevelopmental delay among two-year-old infants in Northern Uganda using easily obtainable predictors. METHODS: We studied children born to women enrolled in a cluster randomized controlled trial (January 2018-March 2019) evaluating the effect of peer counseling…

Estimated Transmissibility and Case Fatality Rate of Bundibugyo Virus, Uganda, 2007.

Because the epidemiology of Bundibugyo virus remains unclear, we reanalyzed the first recognized outbreak (Uganda, 2007). Adjusting for case under-ascertainment and the effect of control measures, we estimated the effective reproduction number (1.55, falling to <1 after intervention) and case-fatality rate (31%, declining to 25%). The underascertainment rate was 15%.

Global Perspectives in Plastic Surgery: View of Plastic Surgeons From Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda, an East African country with a population of approximately 46 million, has 72.62% of its people living in rural areas. Plastic and reconstructive surgery was historically delivered by visiting surgical teams, which, although impactful, faced limitations in follow-up and patient reach. Uganda has only 22 trained local plastic surgeons, mostly in urban private practice. Few work in public hospitals, limiting access to reconstructive care for the country's largely rural population. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 35 participants (plastic surgeons and trainees) was conduc…

Coronary artery disease and neurocognitive performance among older adults in Uganda.

Background Coronary artery disease (CAD) has been linked with poorer cognitive function, potentially through shared risk factors and vascular pathways linking atherosclerotic disease to cerebral vascular injury. However, the association between CAD and neurocognitive performance remains poorly characterized in African populations. Methods We analyzed data from the Uganda Aging and Dementia Cohort Study among participants with coronary computed tomography imaging and neurocognitive testing data. The primary exposure was imaging-defined CAD, and cognitive performance was evaluated at the global-…

Diabetes mellitus, TB, and HIV multi-morbidities among adults in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Antiretroviral therapy has extended HIV patient survival, increasing non-communicable disease prevalence like diabetes mellitus. Strong links exist between HIV, TB, and diabetes. This study examined diabetes prevalence among adults with TB and HIV, or co-infection in Uganda. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study conducted between August 2021 and January 2022 at three urban hospitals in Kampala, Uganda. Participants aged ≥18 years receiving HIV and/or TB treatment for at least 6 months were enrolled. Diabetes screening was performed using random blood glucose and haemoglobin A1C measurement…

Advancing complex hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery in Uganda: Challenges and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Uganda has until recently mostly referred patients for complex hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery abroad due to lack of local expertize. We report indications and a spectrum of surgeries performed in the first 4 years following the establishment of a routine HPB service at Lubaga Hospital (LH), Kampala, Uganda. We also detailed the challenges encountered in setting up this service. METHODS: Demographic, clinical parameters, surgery indications, procedures performed, and outcomes of consecutive patients that underwent HPB surgeries at LH from December 2018 to October 2022 wer…

Reported Suicide Attempts among Adolescents in Uganda: Differences by HIV Status.

Suicide remains a global public health concern and is a leading cause of death among adolescents. Adolescents with perinatally-acquired HIV (PHIV) are particularly vulnerable to suicide and other challenges, including discrimination, stigma, educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviors, and medical complications. In Uganda, adolescents with PHIV experience a high burden of mental health problems, but there is scant information regarding suicide attempts. This study examined lifetime suicide attempts, depressive symptoms, and adverse experiences among adolescents with PHIV and demographicall…

Evidence of Orientia spp. Endemicity among Severe Infectious Disease Cohorts, Uganda.

At 3 severe infection cohort sites in Uganda, Orientia seropositivity was common. We identified 4 seroconversion cases and 1 PCR-positive case. These results provide serologic and molecular support for Orientia spp. circulating in sub-Saharan Africa, possibly expanding its endemic range. Orientia infections could cause severe illness and hospitalizations in this region.

Characterizing persistent urinary incontinence after successful fistula closure: the Uganda experience.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury. Despite successful closure of the fistula, 16% to 55% of women suffer from persistent urinary incontinence after surgery. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the type and severity of persistent incontinence after successful fistula closure and its impact on the quality of life of Ugandan women post-fistula treatment. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study enrolled women with a history of obstetric fistula repair who continued to have persistent urinary incontinence (cases, N=36) and women without incontinence (controls, N=52) aft…

Cytoreductive surgery for giant locally advanced intra-abdominal tumors in Uganda.

Cytoreductive surgery is removal of tumor as much as possible when complete resection is impossible because of advanced disease. It is a management option for giant intra-abdominal tumors with pressure symptoms. We present three patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery for giant intra-abdominal tumors between May 2019 and November 2021. Patient 1 had a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) involving stomach, spleen and transverse colon. En bloc resection of the GIST with the involved viscera was done. Patient 2 had a liposarcoma measuring 25.8 × 19.6 × 15.3 cm infiltrating the stomach, spl

The potential distribution of Bacillus anthracis suitability across Uganda using INLA.

To reduce the veterinary, public health, environmental, and economic burden associated with anthrax outbreaks, it is vital to identify the s … n adjust for spatially structured random effects, to predict the suitability of B. anthracis across Uganda. We apply a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) within the INLA Bayesian framework to quantify the relationships between B. anthracis occurrence and the environment. We consolidate a national database of wildlife, livestock, and human anthrax case reco …
