Transrectal fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was performed in 100 cases of prostatomegaly detected by digital rectal examination (DRE). The cytologic findings were compared with histolgic findings of material obtained by transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) in 84 of the cases. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the range of normal fetal nasal width by ultrasonography, which may be beneficial for detection of trisomy 21 and other chromosomal abnormalities. We hypothesize that a wide, saddle-shaped nose, which is one of the clinical neonatal anatomic features of trisomy 21, can be diagnosed prenatally.
STUDY DESIGN: Fetal nasal width diameter was measured on 782 normal white fetuses by ultrasonography. Gestational ages ranged from 13.8 to 40.4 weeks. Mean and SD of fetal width diameter was calculated weekly by gestational age to establish normal values.

The usefulness of pelvic ultrasound in the diagnosis of Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome was evaluated retrospectively in 44 patients. Ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis in 32%, however was wrong in 68% as a uterus was found, though generally described as hypoplasic. The reasons for the low sensitivity of ultrasonography are discussed.

Intraoperative ultrasonography was used in six horses to aid localization and removal of bone fragments (3 horses) and foreign bodies (3 horses). The ultrasound transducer was enclosed in a sterile sleeve containing sterile aqueous gel and the examination was performed after aseptic preparation of the surgical site. Using ultrasound guidance a needle was placed in contact with the bone fragment or foreign body and an incision was made along the path of the needle to expose and remove the object. This technique resulted in decreased operative time and minimal tissue dissection.

OBJECTIVE: To assess prospectively the role of transvaginal ultrasonography in screening for cystic teratoma and in differentiating cystic teratoma from other ovarian masses.
METHODS: Three hundred seventy-six premenopausal non-pregnant women underwent transvaginal ultrasonography 1 week before undergoing laparotomy or laparoscopy. The visualization of localized or diffuse echogenicity was chosen as the characteristic ultrasonographic finding of cystic teratoma. The authors report their experience with 101 patients examined with laparoscopic ultrasound (LU) using a dedicated 7.5-MHz linear probe which can be introduced through the 10-mm surgical trocars. After observing a benign tumour of the small bowel which led to ileo-ileal invagination in an adult we recalled the main data on the epidemiology, aetiology and diagnosis. In infants, the diagnosis is usually made but in adults, the situation is much rarer and the clinical and radiographic signs are not specific. Echotomography of the abdomen is the most reliable examination. In the adult, surgery is always indicated because invagination is caused by an organic cause in 9 out of 10 cases.
