OBJECTIVE: Female urinary incontinence (UI) can lead to social isolation (SI). To reduce UI's probable impact, women tend to self-manage their symptoms and employ coping strategies which can sometimes be dysfunctional and exacerbate SI. UI dysfunctional coping strategies are primarily employed as a means of self-management, with women failing to engage in efforts to seek treatment. Literature regarding the mediating role of dysfunctional UI strategies in the relationship between UI severity and SI is scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the mediating role of dysfunctional UI hiding and d…

BACKGROUND: Vaginal stones may form in the setting of mesh exposure with urinary incontinence. This report serves to help understand the presentation, evaluation, and management of vaginal urinary stones.
CASE: A 68-year-old female presented with a vaginal calculus. She had a history of anterior and posterior polypropylene mesh placement for prolapse 7 years earlier and urinary incontinence. The stone was identified on a portion of exposed mesh and removed in office. Pathology confirmed urinary etiology. The exposed mesh resolved with topical estrogen. Cystourethroscopy excluded urinary fistu…

In a series of 148 consecutive female patients with urinary incontinence 62 (group 1) had undergone 1 or more prior anti-incontinence operations and 86 (group 2) had none. After clinical and urodynamic assessment the incidence of detrusor instability in the 2 groups (44 and 51 per cent) was not significantly different but the incidence of stress incontinence in group 1 was significantly greater than in group 2 (58 and 38 per cent, p less than 0.05). Of the 69 patients with a final diagnosis of stress urinary incontinence 45 (24 in group 1) had surgery and were followed for a mean of 17 months …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common in women. For up to 77%, the use of absorbent continence products (pads) is central to management. Pad changes are common and reasons for change are not fully described. We hypothesized that women change their pads for many reasons other than wetness and at saturation levels well below advertised capacity.
METHODS: A sample of 11 community dwelling women aged 65-95 (mean 78.1, SD 8.2) years was included. Participants completed a bespoke questionnaire on satisfaction with their current pads; UI severity and quality of life were meas…

A 4-year-old castrated mixed-breed dog had atypical signs of chronic distemper encephalomyelitis. The predominant signs were related to visceral rather than somatic dysfunction. The visceral dysfunction was largely attributable to distemper-associated inflammatory lesions in the spinal cord and resulted in fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence, and priapism. Empirical treatment of the dog resulted in transitory improvement prior to euthanasia performed because of the progressive nature of the encephalomyelitis.

AIM: The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) and the Wexner Scale have been included in the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement core outcome set during pregnancy and childbirth, to measure urinary and anal incontinence. The reliability and validity of these instruments have not been fully evaluated in maternity populations. The aim of this study was to conduct a psychometric evaluation of the ICIQ-UI SF and Wexner Scale.
METHODS: Consecutive pregnant women (n = 309) who booked for care at one Australian bir…

IMPORTANCE: Women experiencing symptoms of urinary incontinence (UI) may be reluctant to discuss their symptoms with their primary care physicians (providers) due to embarrassment and stigma surrounding the condition.
OBJECTIVES: As part of a primary care quality improvement pilot intervention for UI, this study aimed to assess the success of an online screening tool in identifying bothersome urinary UI in a primary care setting. A secondary analysis sought to determine the percentage of women who discussed the condition with their providers.
STUDY DESIGN: Providers from a regional medical g…

INTRODUCTION: Urinary incontinence (UI)-including stress (SUI), urge (UUI), and mixed (MUI) subtypes-is associated with obesity, and weight loss is commonly recommended for intervention. However, the comparative effects of intentionality and weight loss strategies on UI severity remain poorly defined.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 16,331 adults from the 2001-2020 NHANES cohorts who self-reported 1-year weight loss and completed the UI questionnaire. Our use of a large, diverse sample of U.S. men and women and self-reported intentionality and strategies (dietary changes, exercise, intermit…

Background/Objectives: Urinary incontinence (UI) is common among women practicing sports, particularly those involving heavy lifting or high-impact movements that increase intra-abdominal pressure. UI can negatively affect social life, self-confidence, and motivation to remain active. This study aimed to examine the associations of sociodemographic, training-related, obstetric, and surgical factors with UI in female weightlifters. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 84 French women who regularly practiced weightlifting. Participants completed a structured questionnaire collecting soci…

AbstractMorning Report is a time-honored tradition where physicians-in-training present cases to their colleagues and clinical experts to collaboratively examine an interesting patient presentation. The Morning Report section seeks to carry on this tradition by presenting a patient's chief concern and story, inviting the reader to develop a differential diagnosis and discover the diagnosis alongside the authors of the case. This report examines the story of a 68-year-old man with a history of end-stage renal disease who presented with urinary incontinence following a kidney transplant. Through…

Urinary incontinence is characterized by the involuntary leakage of urine. The primary cause of stress urinary incontinence in women is the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a significant global health problem that impacts mainly middle-aged women, with a severe impact on their quality of life. Traditional diagnostic methods and treatments often fail, although technological innovations have improved diagnostic accuracy, such as specific questionnaires or transperineal ultrasound. While medical therapies and surgical procedures are continuously being de…
