This study aims to systematically isolate different anatomical features of the human pharynx with the goal to investigate their independent influence on airflow dynamics and particle deposition characteristics in a geometrically realistic human airway. Loeys-Dietz syndrome presents early in life with rapidly progressive aortic aneurysmal disease, hypertelorism, and bifid uvula/cleft palate. Genetic testing reveals transforming growth factor-beta 1 and 2 mutations. Patients require monitoring for progressive aneurysmal disease, and may need total aortic replacement. Two patients are presented who typify these concepts.

Difficulty breathing after upper airway surgery requires immediate evaluation and treatment. We present a case of airway compromise after sinus surgery due to edema of the uvula. The patient was admitted for observation overnight and discharged the next day. A discussion of potential airway changes after sinonasal surgery is presented.

We report two patients with hepatic encephalopathy who developed periodic alternating gaze deviation (PAGD). Neither patient had an evident structural lesion, and the PAGD subsided after treatment of the encephalopathy. We postulate that a GABA-mediated disturbance affecting the cerebellar nodulus and uvula was responsible for the PAGD in these patients.

We report on a newborn boy with pronounced hypotonia, cryptorchidism, minor facial anomalies, congenital heart defect, neurologic anomaly, deafness, renal anomaly, and bifid uvula. A child with microdeletion at 22q11.21 was referred to a craniofacial center due to hypernasality, unintelligible speech, and bifid uvula. Velopharyngeal dysfunction remained after surgical repair of submucous cleft palate and speech therapy. A prosthetic-behavioral treatment approach involving total obturation of the velopharynx was successfully implemented for management of velopharyngeal hypodynamism.

Bovine familial convulsion and ataxia, a heritable disorder, is present in crossbred Aberdeen Angus cattle in western Canada. Though the prevalence appears to be low, this genetic defect might become widespread if not controlled. Characteristic histological lesions were seen in the lingula, uvula, or both, of all affected calves regardless of their age.

A 4-year-old boy had a history of persistent barking cough unresponsive to medical treatment since infancy. He described a feeling of something in his throat. When investigated by flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, the only abnormality was the uvula resting in contact with the epiglottis. The cough was no longer present after uvulectomy.

Effects of these lesions on optokinetic and optokinetic afternystagmus OKAN), vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), visual suppression, and adaptation and habituation of VOR were studied using an identical experimental protocol. Fifty-two patients with velopharyngeal incompetency without overt cleft palate underwent pharyngeal flap surgery. BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly is cranial asymmetry caused by external forces on the skull. Deformational plagiocephaly is seen in 5% to 48% of healthy newborns. Incomplete uvular fusion, in contrast, is one of many uvular malformations. The incidence of all degrees of incomplete uvular fusion is approximately 1% in healthy children. Bifid uvula is a malformation that is often considered a microform cleft palate or a marker for submucous cleft palate.

Four cases of congenital fistula of the palate are presented. All four patients had a fistula which was situated in the vault with a bifid uvula, submucous separation of the palatal muscles, deformities of the palatal plates and unilateral cleft lip. Velopharyngeal incompetence appeared in primarily treated children. The aetiology and surgical treatment of the congenital defect are discussed.
