[Clinico-laboratory diagnosis of chronic candidiasis of the external genital organs in women].

Major clinical characteristics of various forms of recurrent chronic external genital candidiasis in females and remission thereof are considered. Cytologic findings in vaginal smears are reported, as are the results of Candida albicans culture in vaginal discharge of patients with acute and subacute recurrences and those with remissions. Cytologic investigation is shown to be very valuable and capable of differentiating between various forms of the pathology when used in combination with the cultures. It was also valuable in the diagnosis of acute and suacute relapses of chronic candidiasis, …

Inflammatory smears--is there a correlation between microbiology and cytology findings?

Cervical smear results reporting the presence of inflammation are regularly encountered by smeartakers, yet the significance of this finding is not clear. We wished to evaluate whether the presence of inflammation on smear test was associated with a higher incidence of lower genital tract infection. A retrospective review was carried out on women attending our colposcopy unit for their first visit during 2001. Results of 256 women were available for analysis. Evidence of inflammation was found in 9.7% of smears. Genital tract infection was found in 29.2% of women overall. Infection with more t

Impact of the Genius Digital Diagnostics System on workflow and accuracy compared with the ThinPrep Imaging System for review of ThinPrep Papanicolaou tests.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we compared the workflow of the Genius Digital Diagnostics System (Hologic, Inc) with our current workflow based on the ThinPrep Imaging System (Hologic, Inc) to assess potential efficiencies associated with digitalization of Papanicolaou screening. METHODS: Each step of the current workflow (glass slide movement and slide review) and the experimental workflow were documented. Substantial workflow efficiencies were associated with the reduction of glass slide movement observed with the experimental workflow of the Genius system compared with the ThinPrep system. RES

Morphometrical Differences among Endometrial Endometrioid Carcinoma Grade 1, Grade 3, and Serous Carcinoma in Endometrial Liquid-Based Cytology Preparations.

INTRODUCTION: In Japan, the direct smearing preparation (conventional preparation) has been widely used for cytological examination of the endometrium. Problems with the conventional preparation can be dissolved by liquid-based cytology (LBC) preparation. The Yokohama System is a method for reporting endometrial cytology, but the system lumps cancers together and does not distinguish between histological types. The objective of this study was to clarify morphometrical differences among endometrial endometrioid carcinoma grade 1 (G1), grade 3 (G3), and serous carcinoma (Serous) by image analysi

Comparison of the Diagnostic Utility of Manual Screening and the ThinPrep Imaging System in Liquid-Based Cervical Cytology.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic results of the ThinPrep manual method (TPMM) and ThinPrep automated method (TPAM) in liquid-based cytology and present the advantages and disadvantages of both methods. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A total of 1.500 randomized ThinPrep Pap tests that were screened manually and archived in 2015 were reviewed by a blinded researcher manually and by the ThinPrep automatic method. RESULTS: There was a 83.3% increase in the detection of ASCUS (Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) with the TPAM compared to the TPMM, and with respect to the reference res

Cytology of the vulva: feasibility and preliminary results of a new brush.

OBJECTIVE: Taking a biopsy is a standard procedure to make the correct diagnosis in patients with suspicious premalignant vulvar lesions. The use of a less invasive diagnostic tool as triage instrument to determine whether biopsy is necessary may improve patient comfort especially in patients with chronic vulvar disorders that may warrant consecutive biopsies. This study was conducted to investigate whether vulvar brush cytology is feasible and may be used to detect (pre)malignant vulvar lesions. METHODS: A pilot study was performed with patients having clinically normal vulvar skin, lichen s

Assessment of cervical erosion in Hamedan city, Iran.

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of socio-economic factors and cytology in cervical erosion. A cross-sectional study involving 410 females in the reproductive age group was conducted in urban health centers in Hamedan city, Iran. Data were collected through interviews with women, gynecological examination in the clinics in the health centers and laboratory tests. Cervical erosion was detected in 68 (16.6%) females. Out of these mild dysplasia was seen in (8.8%) females. High percentages of inflammatory smears (58.8%) were obtained in women with cervical erosion. Cervical ero
