BACKGROUND: Scrotal swelling from varicocele is a common complaint in adult men. Varicocele due to portosystemic collaterals is a rare presentation of portal hypertension. METHODS: Between 1997 and 2009, 180 boys diagnosed as having varicocele who underwent Palomo laparoscopic ligation were evaluated retrospectively. Outcome variables recorded for analysis were age at presentation, symptoms, varicocele grade (Dubin-Amelar classification), testicular atrophy, length of hospital stay, perioperative complications, recurrence and hydrocele formation after surgery. Antegrade sclerotherapy is an established procedure for the treatment of varicocele. To avoid complications during the dissection of the pampiniform plexus, detailed knowledge of the angioarchitecture of the spermatic cord is recommended.
