The relationship between phonological codes on memory and spelling tasks for students with and without learning disabilities.

The purpose of the study was to determine the degree to which 31 (23 boys and 8 girls) 13-year-old children with learning disabilities from Grades 7, 8, and 9 were comparable to younger (9-year-old) reading- and spelling-matched controls in (a) phonological similarity effects, (b) phonetically based misspellings, and (c) relationships between memory and spelling performance. Children with reading disabilities and reading-recognition-matched controls, subgrouped by spelling ability, were compared on their memory for phonetically similar and dissimilar word lists and types of spelling errors. Symbolic and non-symbolic geometric abilities across development and in individuals with dyscalculia and dyslexia.

Geometry is fundamental to mathematical thinking, yet its foundations and difficulties in learning disorders remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the development of geometric abilities and their relationship with developmental dyscalculia and dyslexia. Seventy-nine children and adults, including individuals with and without learning difficulties, completed behavioral measures of non-symbolic geometry and a paper-and-pencil assessment of symbolic geometry. Geometric abilities continued to develop from early adolescence into young adulthood and non-symbolic geometry predicted symbolic

Performance of Deaf Participants in an Abstract Visual Grammar Learning Task at Multiple Formal Levels: Evaluating the Auditory Scaffolding Hypothesis.

Previous research has hypothesized that human sequential processing may be dependent upon hearing experience (the "auditory scaffolding hypothesis"), predicting that sequential rule learning abilities should be hindered by congenital deafness. To test this hypothesis, we compared deaf signer and hearing individuals' ability to acquire rules of different computational complexity in a visual artificial grammar learning task using sequential stimuli. As a group, deaf participants succeeded at all levels of the task; Bayesian analysis indicates that they successfully acquired each of several targe

Memory functioning in developmental dyslexia: an analysis using two clinical memory measures.

The goals of this project were threefold: to determine the nature of the memory deficit in children/adolescents with dyslexia, to utilize clinical memory measures in this endeavor, and to determine the extent to which semantic short-term memory (STM) is related to basic reading performance. Two studies were conducted using different samples, one incorporating the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning and the other incorporating the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version. Results suggest that phonological STM is deficient in children with dyslexia, but semantic STM and visual…

Long-term blood pressure variability throughout young adulthood and cognitive function in midlife: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Whether long-term blood pressure (BP) variability throughout young adulthood is associated with cognitive function in midlife remains uncertain. Using data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA), which recruited healthy young adults aged 18 to 30 years (mean age, 25 years) at baseline (Y(0)), we assessed BP variability by SD and average real variability (ARV) for 25 years (8 visits). Cognitive function was assessed with the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (psychomotor speed test), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (verbal memory test), and the modified Stroop tes…

Ageing with Traumatic Brain Injury: Long-Term Cognition and Wellbeing.

Whether and how traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts ageing in the decades post-injury remains a matter of debate, partly due to a lack of c … ently associated with poorer cognition across multiple domains (p < 0.05). The relationship between verbal learning and memory impairment post-TBI differed between age groups: individuals with TBI in their 40s-60s performed significantly worse than same-aged controls on verbal story acquisition (B = 0.09, p = 0.040, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.004, 0.17]) and …

Specific spatial defect in a child with septo-optic dysplasia.

A blind girl with septo-optic dysplasia was compared with a blind, age-matched control on three spatial tests. Previous observations had suggested a specific spatial learning disorder. Results of the tests showed good verbal intelligence but severe impairment of topographical orientation, route-learning and kinaesthetic memory. It is argued that these dysfunctions were a direct consequence of the malformation syndrome, and could not be accounted for by factors such as sex or congenital blindness.

Prenatal organochlorine and methylmercury exposure and memory and learning in school-age children in communities near the New Bedford Harbor Superfund site, Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, and methylmercury (MeHg) are environmentally persistent with adverse effects on neurodevelopment. However, especially among populations with commonly experienced low levels of exposure, research on neurodevelopmental effects of these toxicants has produced conflicting results. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the association of low-level prenatal exposure to these contaminants with memory and learning. METHODS: We studied 393 children, born between 1993 and 1998 to mothers residing near a PCB-contaminated harbor in New Bedford,

Neural underpinnings of memory encoding and retrieval: Validation of a novel ecologically valid fMRI paradigm.

Cognitive impairment is prevalent in affective disorders. Currently, there is a lack of effective treatment options, which is partly due to limited insight into their neural underpinnings and poor transfer to everyday life. Integrating neuroimaging measures in cognition trials to identify neurocircuitry biomarkers is crucial for treatment development. We pooled baseline data from two clinical trials to validate a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm simulating real-life verbal learning and memory tasks. Healthy participants with no psychiatric history (n = 34) underwent …

Alexithymia and cognitive dysfunctions in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: In patients with panic disorder (PD), the difficulty to identify and manage emotional experience might contribute to the enduring vulnerability to panic attacks. Such a difficulty might reflect a dysfunction of fronto-temporo-limbic circuits. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that drug-free patients with PD, as compared with healthy subjects (HS), show a higher prevalence of alexithymia, greater difficulty in emotional stimuli processing and poorer performance on neuropsychological tests exploring the activity of fronto-temporo-limbic circuits. METHODS: Alexith

The effect of referential and emotional information on novel word learning: an fNIRS study.

The current study utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy to examine the neural mechanisms underlying the effect of referential and emotional information on novel word learning. After learning the meaning of novel words in different sentences, participants were asked to complete a semantic consistency judgment task and a source judgment task. The behavioral data and neural data were recorded simultaneously. The results showed that: (1) referential information affected the novel word learning; (2) the interaction between referential and emotional information was significant; (3) these ef

REM sleep in naps differentially relates to memory consolidation in typical preschoolers and children with Down syndrome.

Sleep is recognized as a physiological state associated with learning, with studies showing that knowledge acquisition improves with naps. Little work has examined sleep-dependent learning in people with developmental disorders, for whom sleep quality is often impaired. We examined the effect of natural, in-home naps on word learning in typical young children and children with Down syndrome (DS). Despite similar immediate memory retention, naps benefitted memory performance in typical children but hindered performance in children with DS, who retained less when tested after a nap, but were mor

Women have farther to fall: gender differences between normal elderly and Alzheimer's disease in verbal memory engender better detection of Alzheimer's disease in women.

We analyzed verbal episodic memory learning and recall using the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale-III to determine how gender differences in AD compare to those seen in normal elderly and whether or not these differences impact assessment of AD. We administered the LM to both an AD and a Control group, each comprised of 21 men and 21 women, and found a large drop in performance from normal elders to AD. Of interest was a gender interaction whereby the women's scores dropped 1.6 times more than the men's did. Control women on average outperformed Control men on every asp

Foreign language learning difficulties in Italian children: are they associated with other learning difficulties?

A group of seventh- and eighth-grade Italian students with low achievement (LA) in learning English as a foreign language (FL) was selected and compared to a group with high achievement (HA) in FL learning. The two groups were matched for age and nonverbal intelligence. Two experiments were conducted to examine the participants' verbal and nonverbal learning skills, such as native language reading accuracy, speed and comprehension, calculation, and attention and self-regulation. Both experiments showed that the LA group seemed at risk for reading comprehension difficulties, but its reading spe…
