We report a 38-year-old woman who developed what appeared to be Fisher syndrome associated with optic nerve involvement. One week after a common cold, she developed double vision and left facial palsy. Four days after the onset, she developed bilateral blurred vision, painful total ophthalmoplegia, and ataxic gait. Brain CT and MRI findings were normal. Her vision worsened but the optic fundi were normal. Serum anti-GQ 1 b antibody was elevated. She received steroid therapy at another hospital, and her vision, facial palsy and ocular pain improved. She was transferred to our hospital and we tr

PurposeTo compare quality of life (QoL) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and dry-type age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with similar best-corrected visual acuity.MethodsAge-, sex-, and visual acuity-matched POAG and dry AMD patients were included in the study. Each patient performed 24-2 and 10-2 SITA standard visual field tests. Contrast sensitivity was evaluated with CSV-1000 HGT instrument. The 25 item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) was used to analyze QoL. Overall and subscale scores were converted to scores between 0 and 100, the

The incidence and geographic distribution of dengue has increased dramatically in recent years across various parts of the world. Previously, ocular findings in dengue fever were considered rare. We report a spectrum of ocular manifestations presenting with vision loss in the last dengue epidemic in an eastern state of India. This is a retrospective interventional case series of patients with vision loss who were diagnosed with dengue eye disease in the 2022 epidemic. Systemic and ophthalmic examinations were completed on all patients and were analyzed. Fifteen patients had presented with visi

Dry eye disease (DED) can lead to ocular discomfort as well as visual disturbances. Older adults are more likely to develop DED. They are also more likely to develop retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, which may require vitreoretinal surgeries, lasers, and intravitreal injections. Posterior segment surgery may cause or worsen existing dry eye symptoms, albeit temporarily. Despite good anatomic and functional outcomes, ocular surface dysfunction can have a significant impact on the quality of life, lowering a patient's satisfaction with the retina

Prior research on visual impairments has documented specific challenges that people with low vision face such as reading and mobility. Yet, much less focus has been given to the relationships between seemingly separate challenges such as mobility and social interactions; limiting the potential of services and assistive technologies for people with low vision. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 low vision participants and examined the relationships between challenges and coping strategies overarching three facets of life - functional, psychological, and social.

Binocular vision disorders or dysfunctions have considerable impact on daily visual activities such as reading. Heterophoria (phoria) is a latent eye misalignment (with a prevalence of up to 35%) that appears in conditions that disrupt binocular vision and it may affect the quality of binocular fusion. Our recent study, which used lateral masking (LM), suggests that subjects with binocular fusion disorders (horizontal phoria) exhibit an asymmetry and an abnormal pattern of both binocular and monocular lateral interactions, but only for the horizontal meridian (HM). The perceptive field (PF) is

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of luminance on refraction and visual function under twilight conditions.
METHODS: Twenty young adults (mean age 20.5 ± 0.5 years) without ocular diseases and 20 eyes were included in the study. Subjective and objective spherical equivalent power (SE), logMAR, pupil diameter, ocular aberration, and ocular axial length were evaluated. Measurements were conducted in a light room with high luminance (300 cd/m2) targets (photopic), in a dark room with low luminance (10 cd/m2) targets (twilight), and a dark room after 15 min of adaptation to low luminance (10 cd

SIGNIFICANCE: The range of clear and single binocular vision differs between 3D displays and clinical prism vergences, but this difference is unexplained. This difference prevents clinicians from predicting the range of clear and single binocular vision in 3D-viewing patients. In this study, we tested a hypothesis for this difference.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether changing fixation target size in 3D viewing significantly affects the vergence ranges and, if so, then to determine whether the target size effect is driven by fusional vergence gain changes, threshold

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Homonymous visual field defects are a common sequela of stroke, and are assumed to be permanent within a few weeks of the event. Because consensus about the efficacy of rehabilitation is lacking, visual therapy is rarely prescribed. Here, we review current rehabilitation options and strategies in the translational pipeline that could change these perspectives.
RECENT FINDINGS: The mainstays of available therapy for homonymous visual defects are compensation training and substitution, which allow patients to better use their spared vision. However, early clinical studies sug

We present two neural models for vergence angle control of a robotic head, a simplified and a more complex one. Both models work in a closed-loop manner and do not rely on explicitly computed disparity, but extract the desired vergence angle from the post-processed response of a population of disparity tuned complex cells, the actual gaze direction and the actual vergence angle. The first model assumes that the gaze direction of the robotic head is orthogonal to its baseline and the stimulus is a frontoparallel plane orthogonal to the gaze direction. The second model goes beyond these assumpti

BACKGROUND: The eye is moved so that the object of interest falls on the central fovea, where the spatial resolution is highest. In the present study we quantified eye movements of normal test persons during steady fixation and characterized the fixation using a 3D fixation plot (X horizontal eye position, Y vertical eye position, Z time in each eye position).
METHOD: Fixation eye movements were quantified binocularly in ten normal test persons during a 40-s fixation task using an infrared recording technique.
RESULTS: The fixation plot was characterized by a single preferred fixation locus

Is there an effect on binocular coordination during reading of oculomotor imbalance (heterophoria, strabismus and inadequate convergence) and of functional lateral characteristics (eye preference and perceptually privileged visual laterality)? Recordings of the binocular eye-movements of ten-year-old children show that oculomotor imbalances occur most often among children whose left visual perceptual channel is privileged, and that these subjects can present optomotor dissociation and manifest lack of motor coordination. Close binocular motor coordination is far from being the norm in reading.

The examinations have been carried out under model conditions in women aged 33.6 +/- 3.8, in whom refraction defects or other sight organ disorders had been excluded. In order to select factors that would be most sensitive and specific for evaluation of visual fatigue, variations in the following indices of the sight organ occupational condition have been analysed: the near vision point, dispersing lens tolerance, retina sensibility, critical fusion frequency, speed and accuracy of perception, visual simple and choice reaction time. The indices have been analysed under the performance of sigh

Effective binocular vision is dependent on both motor and perceptual function. Young children undergo development of both components while interacting with their dynamic three-dimensional environment. When this development fails, eye misalignment and double vision may result. We compared the range of image disparities over which young children display reflex motor realignment of their eyes with the range over which they report a single versus double percept. In response to step changes in the disparity of a 2.2° wide stimulus, 5-year-olds generated an adult-like reflex vergence velocity tuning

OBJECTIVE: To report indications, fitting feasibility, and safety of miniscleral design (MSD) lenses in children.
METHODS: Medical records of patients aged <18 years at the time of referral to Contact Lens Clinic of Farabi Eye Hospital, because of inadequate spectacle-corrected visual acuity, rigid gas-permeable or soft contact lens intolerance, and ocular surface disease were reviewed. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), best-corrected vision with the lens (CCVA), lens parameters, and comfortable daily wearing time (CDWT) were documented.
