Correlation Between Vitamin B12 Deficiency and Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) are the most prevalent organ-specific autoimmune disorders. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the proper functioning of the immune system. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the correlation between vitamin B12 deficiency and AITD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 306 patients (aged 18-65 years, mean - 37.6 ± 11.3 years and comprising 87 males and 219 females) were studied retrospectively (observational study). Patients were divided into groups: with and without vitamin B12 deficiency, and with and without AITD. Differences b

Effects of maternal folate and vitamin B12 on gestational diabetes mellitus: a dose-response meta-analysis of observational studies.

To comprehensively estimate the association of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk with maternal red blood cell (RBC) folate, plasma/serum folate, dose and duration of folic acid supplement (FAS) intake and vitamin B12 separately. PubMed, Web of science, CNKI, and Wanfang Databases were searched through March 26, 2021. We synthesized data using random-effects model meta-analysis in Stata 12.0. Sensitivity, subgroup and dose-response analyses were also performed. The certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE). T

A variety of abnormal movements in 13 cases with nutritional cobalamin deficiency in infants.

HYPOTHESIS: Abnormal movements such as tremor, myoclonus, and choreoathetosis due to infantile nutritional vitamin B12 (Cbl, cobalamin) deficiency or after Cbl injection have been recognized for many years. However, nutritional Cbl deficiency may be more common than recognized and a variety of the abnormal movements may be beyond our estimates. OBJECTIVE: To define the relationship between a large variety of abnormal movements in infants and vitamin B12 deficiency even if serum vitamin B12 levels and/or examination are normal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed a variety of abnormal

Methylmalonic acid and vitamin B12 in patients with heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin B12 deficiency among patients with heart failure (HF) may have been underestimated. High serum levels of methylmalonic acid (MMA) have been identified in several studies as an early indicator of vitamin B12 deficiency. Furthermore, MMA seems to constitute a biomarker of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. There are scarce data regarding vitamin B12 and MMA in patients with HF. The aim of this study was to investigate vitamin B12 and MMA serum levels in patients with HF. METHODS: One hundred five consecutive patients admitted to our hospital with symptoms and sig

[Successful treatment with mecobalamin in a pernicious anemia patient presenting with false-normal serum vitamin B12].

An 81-year-old woman presented to our hospital with anemia. Complete blood counts revealed macrocytic anemia; however, serum vitamin B12 and folate levels were normal. Bone marrow aspiration revealed multilineage dysplasia, and the patient was initially diagnosed with refractory cytopenia and multilineage dysplasia subtype of myelodysplastic syndrome. However, blood smear revealed hypersegmented neutrophils and bone marrow aspiration showed remarkable megaloblastic changes of erythroid cells. Based on these findings, the patient was administered 1,500 µg mecobalamin per day on a trial basis. T

Failure to thrive and life-threatening complications due to inherited selective cobalamin malabsorption effectively managed in a juvenile Australian shepherd dog.

A juvenile Australian shepherd dog exhibited failure to grow, inappetence, weakness, nonregenerative anemia, neutropenia, and cobalamin deficiency. DNA testing confirmed homozygosity of an amnionless mutation (AMN c.3G > A). Clinical signs resolved with supportive care and parenteral cobalamin supplementation. Inherited selective intestinal cobalamin malabsorption requiring lifelong parenteral supplementation should be considered in Australian shepherds, giant schnauzers, border collies, and beagles that fail to thrive.

Hypomethylation of serum blood clot DNA, but not plasma EDTA-blood cell pellet DNA, from vitamin B12-deficient subjects.

Vitamin B12, a co-factor in methyl-group transfer, is important in maintaining DNA (deoxycytidine) methylation. Using two independent assays we examined the effect of vitamin B12-deficiency (plasma vitamin B12<148 pmol/L) on DNA methylation in women of childbearing age. Coagulated blood clot DNA from vitamin B12-deficient women had significantly (p<0.001) lower percentage deoxycytidine methylation (3.23±0.66%; n = 248) and greater [3 H]methyl-acceptance (42,859±9,699 cpm; n = 17) than DNA from B12-replete women (4.44±0.18%; n = 128 and 26,049±2,814 cpm; n = 11) [correlation between assays: r =

Cobalamin deficiency presenting as obsessive compulsive disorder: case report.

Cobalamin deficiency commonly presents with a wide range of neuropsychiatric manifestations ranging from myelopathy, neuropathy, optic neuritis and dementia to mood disorders, chronic fatigue and psychosis even without classical hematological abnormalities like anemia and macrocytosis. However, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in relation to vitamin B12 deficiency has not been described so far. We report a case of middle-aged man presenting with OCD, low serum cobalamin and a positive family history of vitamin B12 deficiency who responded well to methylcobalamin replacement.

Brain atrophy caused by vitamin B12-deficient anemia in an infant.

Vitamin B12 deficiency in infants often presents with nonspecific hematological, gastrointestinal, and neurological manifestations. It is usually caused by inadequate intake, abnormal absorption, or congenital disorders of vitamin B12 metabolism, including transport disorders. We describe a vitamin B12-deficient infant with severe anemia who was breastfed. His mother had undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency having undergone total gastrectomy 18 years earlier. The infant developed normally after taking vitamin B12. It is important to suspect vitamin B12 deficiency in mothers who have undergone ga

Cobalamin C defect: natural history, pathophysiology, and treatment.

Cobalamin C (Cbl-C) defect is the most common inborn cobalamin metabolism error; it causes impaired conversion of dietary vitamin B12 into its two metabolically active forms, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. Cbl-C defect causes the accumulation of methylmalonic acid and homocysteine and decreased methionine synthesis. The gene responsible for the Cbl-C defect has been recently identified, and more than 40 mutations have been reported. MMACHC gene is located on chromosome 1p and catalyzes the reductive decyanation of CNCbl. Cbl-C patients present with a heterogeneous clinical picture and,

Challenges of long-term nutrition intervention studies on cognition: discordance between observational and intervention studies of vitamin B12 and cognition.

Conducting long-term nutrition intervention studies on cognition can be challenging. The gaps in current methodology are addressed via a case study of the relationship between vitamin B(12) and cognition in people aged 60 and older. There is robust evidence from many observational studies, both cross-sectional and longitudinal, showing that a deficit of the vitamin is associated with poor or declining cognition in this age group, but supplementation of the vitamin in trials does not bring about improved cognition. The evidence from observational studies as well as clinical trials is reviewed h

Schizophrenia-like psychotic episode precipitated by cobalamin deficiency.

Although cobalamin deficiency is widely known and usually presents with hematologic and neuropsychiatric manifestations, the psychiatric symptoms are not usually the predominant manifestation. We describe a young single male vegetarian who developed a cobalamin-induced psychotic episode without preceding neurologic manifestations and without any hematologic symptoms. He recovered after a short course of antipsychotics and oral cobalamin supplementation and remained asymptomatic and functionally independent at 1 year of follow-up.

[A case of subacute combined degeneration with normal serum vitamin B12 level].

A 40-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of pancytopenia with megaloblastic anemia. Two months later she complained of rapidly progressive gait disturbance and numbness in the distal part of limbs. She also told that her hair had turned totally gray in the third decade. Neurologically, mental state, cranial nerves and cerebellar functions were normal. Superficial sensations were impaired below the lower thoracic level and deep sensations were completely lost in the lower limbs. Moderate weakness was found in the lower limbs, symmetrically. Deep tendon reflexes were diminished i
