Folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and methionine intakes and risk for nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Chinese adults: a matched case-control study.

Many studies have suggested that folate-related one-carbon metabolism-related nutrients may play a role in certain cancer risks, but few studies have assessed their associations with the risk for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In this study, we investigated the association between four folate-related one-carbon metabolism-related nutrients (folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and methionine) and NPC risk in Chinese adults. A total of 600 patients newly diagnosed (within 3 months) with NPC were individually matched with 600 hospital-based controls by age, sex and household type (urban v. rural). F

Vitamin B12 status in older adults living in Ontario long-term care homes: prevalence and incidence of deficiency with supplementation as a protective factor.

Vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency, although treatable, impacts up to 43% of community-living older adults; long-term care (LTC) residents may be at greater risk. Recommendations for screening require further evidence on prevalence and incidence in LTC. Small, ungeneralizable samples provide a limited perspective on these issues. The purposes of this study were to report prevalence of B12 deficiency at admission to LTC, incidence 1 year post-admission, and identify subgroups with differential risk. This multi-site (8), retrospective prevalence study used random proportionate sampling of resident cha

An infant with Imersland-Gräsbeck syndrome.

The Imersland-Gräsbeck Syndrome (IGS) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by megaloblastic anemia due to a selective Vitamin B₁₂ malabsorption in association with mild proteinuria. This syndrome can be diagnosed and treated easily. Herein, we describe an infant with IGS as a rare etiology of growth retardation with diarrhea, vomiting and therapy-resistant proteinuria.

Efficacy of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Replacement Therapies in the Reduction of Adverse Effects of Isotretinoin: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Previous studies have reported elevated homocysteine levels and folic acid and/or vitamin B12 deficiencies after isotretinoin therapy, which increase the risk of cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric disorders. Homocysteine is metabolized in the liver, a process requiring folate and vitamin B12. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to investigate whether folate and vitamin B12 replacement therapy with isotretinoin would be useful for preventing hyperhomocysteinemia. A total of 66 patients with acne were randomized into two groups: group A took isotretinoin, folic acid, and vitamin B12, whe

What is the safe upper intake level of folic acid for the nervous system? Implications for folic acid fortification policies.

Between 1945 and 1959 it was convincingly documented that folic acid can precipitate or aggravate the neurological and haematological consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency by increasing the demand for vitamin B12. Since then there has been much misunderstanding of the issues, mainly by advocates of folic acid fortification who have been inclined to minimise or even dismiss the risks by misinterpreting the evidence as only a 'masking' of the anaemia of pernicious anaemia. Recent studies in the era of fortification are rediscovering the risks to the nervous system, especially cognitive function

Plasma homocysteine and B vitamins levels in Nigerian children with nephrotic syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Available data on plasma homocysteine level in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) are controversial with increased, decreased and unchanged values reported. Therefore, plasma homocysteine and serum B vitamins in Nigerian children with NS were assessed in this study. METHODS: Fasting blood samples were analysed for plasma homocysteine, serum folate and B vitamins in 42 children with NS and 42 age and sex-matched healthy controls in this case control study. Data were compared between NS and control using t test and Chi square. Relationships were tested with regression analysis

Myelopathy and polyneuropathy caused by nitrous oxide toxicity: a case report.

A 19-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of progressive 4-limb numbness and gait imbalance. Physical examination revealed mild general muscular weakness, areflexia, and wide-based, ataxic, steppage gait. Sensory tests showed diminished superficial sensation below the level of the cervical-thoracic junction and a glove-and-stocking pattern of sensory loss at the 4 extremities. An initial magnetic resonance imaging examination of the cervical spine revealed an increased bilateral signal from the posterior and anterior columns on T(2)-weighted images. Nerve conduction velocity and elect

Ambulatory dysfunction due to unrecognized pernicious anemia.

Pernicious anemia can result in significant hematologic and neurologic impairments due to a reduction in cobalamin absorption. Typically thought to be a disease of elderly whites, a growing body of literature has documented the disease in blacks and in younger age groups. We describe a case of a young black woman with gradually progressive lower extremity paresthesias, weakness, and ataxia as the primary presenting symptoms of pernicious anemia. This case is presented to make emergency physicians aware of pernicious anemia as a cause of ambulatory dysfunction in younger patients. We review the

Nutritional peripheral neuropathies.

Nutritional peripheral neuropathies are a global problem, heavily influenced by geopolitical, cultural and socioeconomic factors. Peripheral neuropathy occurs most frequently secondary to B-vitamin deficiencies, which is suspected to increase in years to come due to the popularity of vegan and vegetarian diets and increased use of bariatric surgery. This review will focus on the common B-vitamins for which a causal link to peripheral neuropathy is more established (vitamins B1, B2, B6, B9 and B12). We will review the historical human and animal data on which much of the clinical descriptions of

Metabolomic analysis reveals extended metabolic consequences of marginal vitamin B-6 deficiency in healthy human subjects.

Marginal deficiency of vitamin B-6 is common among segments of the population worldwide. Because pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) serves as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, organic acids, and neurotransmitters, as well as in aspects of one-carbon metabolism, vitamin B-6 deficiency could have many effects. Healthy men and women (age: 20-40 y; n = 23) were fed a 2-day controlled, nutritionally adequate diet followed by a 28-day low-vitamin B-6 diet (<0.5 mg/d) to induce marginal deficiency, as reflected by a decline of plasma PLP from 52.6±14.1 (mean ± SD) to 21.5±4.6 nmol

Effects of copper and vitamin B-6 deficiency on taste sensitivity in the rat: a signal detection analysis.

The effects of dietary copper and Vitamin B-6 deficiency on NaCl sensitivity in adult male rats were assessed in separate studies using a double-blind protocol, high-precision gustometry, computer-controlled go/no-go operant procedures and signal detection measures of sensitivity and responsivity. The dietary manipulations reduced plasma copper ion content to 40% of baseline levels in the copper deficient group and plasma 5'-pyridoxalphosphate content to 5% of baseline levels in the Vitamin B-6 deficient group and, as expected, altered hematocrit and hemoglobin levels in both groups. These met

Vitamin status during total parenteral nutrition.

Plasma concentrations of vitamins A and E, serum and erythrocyte folic acid, serum B12 and erythrocyte enzyme activations (to assess vitamins B1, B2 and B6 status) were measured at the start and finish of 39 courses of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The daily regimen was standard. Plasma vitamin A, E, and folate concentrations and vitamin B6 status improved significantly during TPN. Three patients developed low levels of vitamin A and two patients developed high transketolase activations (B1 depletion) during therapy. The adequacy of vitamin replacement and the monitoring of vitamin status

B-vitamins and homocysteine in Spanish institutionalized elderly.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia is an accepted risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and possibly also for cognitive impairment and dementia. It has also been proposed as a marker for the status of the B vitamins, which participate in the metabolism of homocysteine. Therefore, especially in the elderly, it is important to know the prevalence of high homocysteine (tHcy) levels and the influence that B vitamins have on them. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 218 elderly of both sexes, aged 60-105, living in an elderly home in Granada (Spain), were screened for serum folate, red blood cell (RBC) folate,

Multigene Screening of B-Vitamin Metabolism Pathways in Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: Toward Precision Prenatal Care.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are among the most common and serious complications of pregnancy, exerting substantial effects on both maternal and fetal health. B vitamins particularly folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 are essential to multiple metabolic pathways, most notably homocysteine metabolism, which is closely associated with vascular function and blood pressure regulation. Although understanding of HDP pathophysiology has advanced, early prediction and personalized management remain difficult because of the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. Dietary Intake and Plasma Concentration of B Vitamins in Relation to Incident Coronary Artery Disease in African-American Adults: The Jackson Heart Study.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the role of B vitamins in the disproportionately higher burden of coronary artery disease mortality among African Americans. BACKGROUND: B vitamin inadequacies are common in the United States, particularly among African Americans. B vitamins play a key role in 1-carbon metabolism, and poor status may influence cardiovascular health. We investigated associations of dietary intake of vitamins B-6, B-12, and folate, as well as plasma concentrations of vitamin B-12 and folate, with incident coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: We analyzed data from the Jackson Heart Stud
