Vocal power and pressure-flow relationships in excised tiger larynges.

Despite the functional importance of loud, low-pitched vocalizations in big cats of the genus Panthera, little is known about the physics and physiology of the mechanisms producing such calls. We investigated laryngeal sound production in the laboratory using an excised-larynx setup combined with sound-level measurements and pressure-flow instrumentation. The larynges of five tigers (three Siberian or Amur, one generic non-pedigreed tiger with Bengal ancestry and one Sumatran), which had died of natural causes, were provided by Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo over a five-year period. Anatomical inves

Multiparameter analysis of titanium vocal fold medializing implant in an excised larynx model.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the efficacy of the titanium vocal fold medializing implant (TVFMI) for the treatment of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) on the basis of acoustic, aerodynamic, and mucosal wave measurements in an excised larynx setup. METHODS: Measurements were recorded on 8 excised canine larynges with simulated UVFP before and after medialization with a TVFMI. RESULTS: The phonation threshold flow (p < 0.001) and phonation threshold power (p = 0.008) decreased significantly after medialization. The phonation threshold pressure also decreased, but this difference was not sign

Effect of vocal fold asymmetries on glottal flow.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Voice disorders, such as unilateral vocal fold paralysis or paresis, and vocal fold scarring feature structural asymmetries of the vocal folds. Studies on how structural asymmetries affect voice has mostly been limited to computational simulations and experiments on mechanical models. The purpose of the current study is to examine the effects of asymmetries in left-right position, height, and length of the vocal folds on the intraglottal flow characteristics, as well as acoustics in the canine larynx model. STUDY DESIGN: Basic science. METHODS: Measurements of intraglo

The neocartilaginous formation with hydroxyl-apatite in injection laryngoplasty: an experimental study on rabbit model.

Adductor paralysis or the pathologies occurring after laryngeal surgery such as scarring or atrophy of the vocal cords cause glottic insufficiency during phonation. Injection laryngoplasty has been a widely accepted technique due to lower morbidity of the procedure and the applicability via endoscope in the treatment of these pathologies. Various materials have been used in injection laryngoplasty. The primary expectations in these techniques are the persistence of injected material long enough, without resorbtion or any cause of serious tissue response and having beneficial effects in reinfor

Vocal cord positioning by selective denervation. Old territory revisited.

Vocal cord positioning produced by selective laryngeal denervation remains a controversial issue in clinical laryngology. Previous studies fail to arrive at uniform conclusions for two important reasons: 1) failure to mark a reference sagittal plane from which to assess the degree of vocal cord lateralization, and 2) failure to recognize the influence of tracheostomy and respiratory positioning of the vocal cords. The present study makes use of photographic and electromyographic documentation in the assessment of the paralyzed cord. Physiologic inactivation of the cricothyroid muscle by trache

A corollary discharge circuit in human speech.

When we vocalize, our brain distinguishes self-generated sounds from external ones. A corollary discharge signal supports this function in animals; however, in humans, its exact origin and temporal dynamics remain unknown. We report electrocorticographic recordings in neurosurgical patients and a connectivity analysis framework based on Granger causality that reveals major neural communications. We find a reproducible source for corollary discharge across multiple speech production paradigms localized to the ventral speech motor cortex before speech articulation. The uncovered discharge predic

Central GABA activation and behaviors evoked by tail-pinch stress in the rat.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the possibility that central GABA(A) receptors are involved in the stress response of rats. Separate groups of animals were implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the lateral cerebral ventricle, substantia nigra, and anterior to the rostral margin of the substantia nigra. Microinjections of the GABA(A) agonist muscimol into each of these areas augmented the stress response evoked by moderate tail pinch. Although consistent changes in the amount of food eaten in response to stress were not observed, stress-evoked gnawing was significantly increased by musc

Ultrasonic vocalization in response to unavoidable aversive stimuli in rats: effects of benzodiazepines.

The effects of two benzodiazepine derivatives (diazepam, 0.5-1 mg/kg; alprazolam, 1.25-2.5 mg/kg) on ultrasonic calling elicited in adult rats by unavoidable aversive stimuli (footshocks) were investigated. The results show that either diazepam or alprazolam affected the duration of ultrasonic calls. In particular, a significant decrease in the length of ultrasounds was found in the group of animals treated with these benzodiazepines. The effects of diazepam were counteracted by the benzodiazepine-antagonist Ro 15-1788. On the other hand, neither a neuroleptic agent, such as haloperidol (0.5-1

Management of canine perianal fistula with fluorescence light energy: preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Canine perianal fistula (CPF) is a severe, painful, debilitating skin condition affecting the perianal skin. It often interferes with the quality of life of both dog and owner. Conventional medical treatment involves the use of immunosuppressive therapy; however, the successful resolution of lesions can be limited by poor owner compliance, adverse drug effects and dependence on costly therapies. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to assess the potential benefits of fluorescent light energy (FLE) on cases of CPF. ANIMALS: Four dogs with active perianal fistulas METHODS

Variations in maternal behavior in rats selected for infant ultrasonic vocalization in isolation.

Individual differences in maternal behavior in rodents are associated with altered physiology and behavior in offspring across their lifespan and across generations. Offspring of rat dams that engage in high frequencies of high-arched-back nursing and pup-licking (High-LG) show attenuated stress responses compared to those engaging in lower frequencies (Low-LG). Selective breeding also produces widespread alterations in physiology and behavior that are stable over generations. To examine processes underlying generational and developmental influences on anxiety in an animal model, we developed

Type II thyroplasty changes cortical activation in patients with spasmodic dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a complex neurological communication disorder characterized by a choked, strain-strangled vocal quality with voice stoppages in phonation. Its symptoms are exacerbated by situations where communication failures are anticipated, and reduced when talking with animals or small children. Symptoms are also reduced following selected forms of treatment. It is reasonable to assume that surgical alteration reducing symptoms would also alter brain activity, though demonstration of such a phenomenon has not been documented. The objective of this study is to reveal

Laryngeal adductor function in experimental models of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Most patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis experience some degree of spontaneous reinnervation, which depends upon the type and severity of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. After partial recovery, the paretic vocal fold may or may not adduct adequately to allow glottic closure, which in turn affects phonatory and swallowing outcomes. This process was studied in a series of canine laryngeal nerve injury models. STUDY DESIGN: Animal (canine) experiments. METHODS: Maximum stimulable laryngeal adductor pressure (LAP) was measured pretreatment (baseline) and

Somatotopic changes in the nucleus ambiguus after section and regeneration of the recurrent laryngeal nerve of the rat.

Changes in motoneurons innervating laryngeal muscles after section and regeneration of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) are far from being understood. Here, we report the somatotopic changes within the nucleus ambiguus (Amb) after the nerve injury and relates it to the resulting laryngeal fold impairment. The left RLN of each animal was transected and the stumps were glued together using surgical fibrin glue. After several survival periods (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 weeks; at least six rats at each time point) the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles were injected with fl

Exposure to a dog elicits different cardiovascular and behavioral effects in pregnant and lactating goats.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate and plasma cortisol concentration are often used in evaluation of physiological reactions to stress and fear, but arterial blood pressure is rarely measured in farm animals. Goats are prey animals and can be expected to react strongly to a predator, especially when they have kids. We hypothesized that exposure to a dog elicits a flight response during pregnancy and a fight response when goats have kids to defend. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate should increase in both these cases, due to a synchronized discharge of the sympathetic nervous system. METHODS: Seven g

Controversies Surrounding the Pathophysiology of Tics.

Tics are sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movements or vocalizations (phonic productions) that are commonly present in children and are required symptoms for the diagnosis of Tourette syndrome. Despite their frequency, the underlying pathophysiology of tics/Tourette syndrome remains unknown. In this review, we discuss a variety of controversies surrounding the pathophysiology of tics, including the following: Are tics voluntary or involuntary? What is the role of the premonitory urge? Are tics due to excess excitatory or deficient inhibition? Is it time to adopt the contemporary ver

Tubular expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implants in glottal and neoglottal insufficiency: implantation technique in an animal model.

The problem of the therapy of glottal and neoglottal insufficiency is still unsolved. The surgical techniques and the materials employed up until now are not completely free from possible partial or total failures, early or late complications, or the need of a second operation. The objective of the study is to introduce a new thyroplasty technique of inserting tubular expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) into the larynx of an animal model, with the purpose of using it next in human laryngeal tissue augmentation. Seven 30 kg pigs had tubular e-PTFE implanted under endoscopic control into a

Bionic larynx: electronic control of the reimplanted organ in the dog.

Complete rehabilitation of paralyzed head and neck structures has been difficult, and attempts at reinnervation of striated muscles have not consistently succeeded. Recent studies have shown that disabled muscles can be electronically "paced." This, together with recent developments in microelectronics, has led to the concept of the Bionic Larynx. The current experiments involve transposed nerve-muscle pedicles used to selectively reinnervate larynges which were denervated, entirely detached from the animal except for their vascular supply, and then reimplanted. These pedicles were later stimu

Pain reaction after topical NA and lesions of the obex region in the alert guinea pig.

A study was carried out on the effect of topical application of 3.0 micrograms/microliters noradrenalin (NA) to the obex of awake guinea pigs bearing electrolyte lesions and submitted to noxious peripheral stimulation (electric pulses). The animals with extensive lesions covering the area postrema (AP) and the solitary tract nucleus (STN) showed a marked increase in vocalization (V) and defense motor response (M) to the noxious peripheral stimulus after NA application. In the group bearing lesions restricted to the AP, the analgesic effect of NA was potentiated, with a marked decrease in V and
