Learning, attention/hyperactivity, and conduct problems as sequelae of excessive daytime sleepiness in a general population study of young children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common problem in children, with estimates of 15%; few studies have investigated the sequelae of EDS in young children. We investigated the association of EDS with objective neurocognitive measures and parent reported learning, attention/hyperactivity, and conduct problems in a large general population sample of children. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Population based. PARTICIPANTS: 508 children from The Penn State Child Cohort. INTERVENTIONS: N/A. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Children underwent a 9-h polysomnogram, compr

Profiles of cognitive performance associated with reading disability in temporal lobe epilepsy.

92 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) were classified into reading deficient (RD; N = 41) and non-reading deficient (no-RD; N = 51) groups. A cutoff of 80 was used to further classify patients as having low average or better (AVG: IQ > 79) or below average (LOW: 69 < IQ < 80) intellectual ability. Differences between RD-AVG and no-RD-AVG patients in profiles of performance on cognitive tests were specific to verbal and non-verbal memory and verbal abilities, but not visuoconstructional and executive abilities. RD-LOW patients exhibited globally reduced abilities. Profiles of performanc

Sex differences in story recall decline in preclinical Alzheimer's disease.

Stage II pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease is defined by the presence of increased amyloid-beta evidenced by fluid and/or imaging biomarkers, in the absence of clinical signs and symptoms. Previous research suggests that pre-clinical sex differences exist on measures of story recall, such as the Wechsler memory scale-revised logical memory test total score. However, sex differences on a composite metric of proper names from that test have not been investigated, and the relationships between sex and amyloid positivity on longitudinal logical memory measures are unclear. We examined longitudinal

Intellectual Profile of Adolescents with Headache: A Case-Control Study Using the WISC-IV.

There are few literature evidences about the intellectual profile of adolescents with headache and no study has used the fourth edition of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV) in patients with a diagnosis of headache according to the ICHD-III-beta. We recruited 30 patients (age 11-14 years; male:female = 1:2) seen for headache in a tertiary center in Northern Italy and 30 healthy controls matched for age and sex, recruited in a public school from the same geographic area. The diagnosis of headache was done according to the ICHD-III criteria (beta version): the case group was

Subjective and objective working memory deficits in the post-acute phase of COVID-19 in a clinical trial population.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive difficulties are commonly reported following COVID-19, yet the relationship between subjective and objective working memory (WM) deficits remains unclear. Examining both types of measures may improve understanding of cognitive complaints in individuals with persistent post-COVID-19 symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to describe WM deficits in a clinical trial population with self-reported persistent cognitive difficulties >6 months following COVID-19, compare the frequency of scores exceeding clinical cutoffs on subjective versus objective measures, an

The effect of Sudoku puzzle solving on memory and anxiety of hemodialysis patients: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive and psychological disorders are among the most important outcomes of the end stage of renal disease. Treatments have neither definitely prevented the disorders' progression nor cured them. This study aims at evaluating the effect of solving a Sudoku puzzle on memory and anxiety in hemodialysis (HD) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical trial study was conducted on 64 HD patients. The samples were randomly assigned either to the control group (n = 32) or Sudoku (intervention) group (n = 32). The study lasted for four weeks. The anxiety and

[Higher brain dysfunction in benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spike and atypical benign partial epilepsy of childhood].

Although some recent studies have reported various cognitive impairments and behavioral disorders in children having benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spike (BCECT), it is still commonly believed that BCECT does not cause any definite neuropsychological impairment. In addition, reported impairments range over various cognitive functions, and there is no general agreement on this issue. We performed detailed neuropsychological tests in 17 children with BCECT and analyzed the profiles of their subtests. Atypical benign partial epilepsy of childhood (ABPE) is a type of BCECT in which

Verbal learning and memory impairment in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) to examine effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure on verbal learning and memory have reported impaired information acquisition (i.e., encoding), rather than retrieval, as the primary mechanism underlying learning and memory impairment. We administered the CVLT-C to 2 independent cohorts to determine whether (i) effects on encoding are also seen at moderate exposure levels, using both categorical (diagnostic/exposure group) and continuous exposure measures; (ii) these deficits are specific or
