No effect of venoconstrictive thigh cuffs on orthostatic hypotension induced by head-down bed rest.

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is the most serious symptom of cardiovascular deconditioning induced by head-down bed rest or weightlessness. Wearing venoconstrictive thigh cuffs is an empirical countermeasure used by Russian cosmonauts to limit the shift of fluid from the lower part of the body to the cardio-cephalic region. Our aim was to determine whether or not thigh cuffs help to prevent orthostatic hypotension induced by head-down bed rest. We studied the effect of thigh cuffs on eight healthy men. The cuffs were worn during the day for 7 days of head-down bed rest. We measured: orthostatic…

Effects of 28-day head-down tilt with and without countermeasures on lower body negative pressure responses.

This study was performed to determine the effects of 28 d of head-down tilt (HDT) (simulated weightlessness) on cardiovascular responses to orthostatic stress induced by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) (before, during, and after HDT) and +60 degrees head-up tilt (before and after HDT) in 12 subjects. Half of them underwent countermeasures (CM) of regular muscular exercise (isometric and isokinetic training) and LBNP sessions (-30 mm Hg) as generally performed during spaceflight; the other six were a control group (C). The countermeasure effect on the orthostatic responses to LBNP and tilt …

Maternal exercise represses FGF21 via SIRT1 to improve the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle in hypertensive offspring.

Maternal exercise during pregnancy is widely recognized as an effective means of promoting cardiovascular health in offspring. Few studies have explored how maternal exercise impacts vascular function and phenotypic switching in hypertensive offspring, despite the known involvement of vascular structural and functional remodeling in hypertension pathogenesis. Research indicates a significant relationship between elevated blood pressure and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) levels. It remains unclear whether maternal exercise during pregnancy can improve vascular function in hypertensive offs

Reinforcement learning based variable damping control of wearable robotic limbs for maintaining astronaut pose during extravehicular activity.

As astronauts perform on-orbit servicing of extravehicular activity (EVA) without the help of the space station's robotic arms, it will be rather difficult and labor-consuming to maintain the appropriate position in case of impact. In order to solve this problem, we propose the development of a wearable robotic limb system for astronaut assistance and a variable damping control method for maintaining the astronaut's position. The requirements of the astronaut's impact-resisting ability during EVA were analyzed, including the capabilities of deviation resistance, fast return, oscillation resist

Effects of spaceflight on the spleen and thymus of mice: Gene pathway analysis and immune infiltration analysis.

During space flight, the immune system function of the body is disrupted due to continuous weightlessness, radiation and other factors, resulting in an increased incidence of infectious diseases in astronauts. However, the effect of space flight on the immune system at the molecular level is unknown. The aim of this study was to identify key genes and pathways of spatial environmental effects on the spleen and thymus using bioinformatics analysis of the GEO dataset. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the spleen and thymus of mice preflight and postflight were screened by comprehensive an…

On-Orbit Robotic Grasping of a Spent Rocket Stage: Grasp Stability Analysis and Experimental Results.

The increased complexity of the tasks that on-orbit robots have to undertake has led to an increased need for manipulation dexterity. Space robots can become more dexterous by adopting grasping and manipulation methodologies and algorithms from terrestrial robots. In this paper, we present a novel methodology for evaluating the stability of a robotic grasp that captures a piece of space debris, a spent rocket stage. We calculate the Intrinsic Stiffness Matrix of a 2-fingered grasp on the surface of an Apogee Kick Motor nozzle and create a stability metric that is a function of the local contac

Artificial gravity--head movements during short-radius centrifugation: influence of cognitive effects.

Short-radius centrifugation is a potential countermeasure against the effects of prolonged weightlessness. Head movements in a rotating environment, however, induce serious side effects: inappropriate vestibular ocular reflexes (VOR), body-tilt illusions and motion sickness induced by cross-coupled accelerations on a rotating platform. These are well predicted by a semicircular canal model. The present study investigates cognitive effects on the inappropriate VOR and the illusory sensations experienced by subjects rotating on a short-radius centrifuge (SRC). Subjects (N=19) were placed supine …

Impaired spatial learning after hypergravity exposure in rats.

Most astronauts experience spatial disorientation after exposure to weightlessness, indicating that constant gravity is utilized as a stable external reference during spatial cognition. We attempted to elucidate the role of constant gravity in spatial learning using a radial arm maze test on rats housed in a hypergravity environment (HG) produced by a centrifuge device. Male Wistar rats were kept in 2G linear acceleration for 2 weeks before the spatial learning task, which lasted for 10 days. The control rats were placed close to the centrifuge device but not exposed to hypergravity. Spatial l…

A Survey on 5G and LPWAN-IoT for Improved Smart Cities and Remote Area Applications: From the Aspect of Architecture and Security.

Addressing the recent trend of the massive demand for resources and ubiquitous use for all citizens has led to the conceptualization of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities. Ubiquitous IoT connectivity can be achieved to serve both urban and underserved remote areas such as rural communities by deploying 5G mobile networks with Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN). The current architectures will not offer flexible connectivity to many IoT applications due to high service demand, data exchange, emerging technologies, and security challenges. Hence, this paper explor

Effects of changing gravity on anticipatory grip force control during point-to-point movements of a hand-held object.

We investigated the quality of predictive grip force control during gravity changes induced by parabolic flight maneuvers. During these maneuvers gravity varied: There were 2 periods of hypergravity, in which terrestrial gravity nearly doubled, and a 20-s period of microgravity, during which a manipulated object was virtually weightless. We determined grip and load forces during vertical point-to-point movements of an instrumented object. Point-to-point movements were a combination of static (stationary holding) and dynamic (continuous movements) task conditions, which were separately analyzed

Longitudinal metabolomics profiles reveal increased gut microbial protein fermentation during Spaceflight.

Microgravity is a condition that may affect gastrointestinal function and metabolism during spaceflight. Despite attempts to keep normal dietary habits at the ISS, the food selection and meal timing may also be perturbed during the confinement. To understand the impact of spaceflight on human metabolism, we characterized the plasma metabolome of astronauts (n = 52) before, during, and after missions on board the International Space Station (ISS) using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Here we show that spaceflight affected around 40 circulating compounds. In this longitudin

Biological clocks and blood clots in space: circadian disruption-induced modulation of thrombosis risk.

Long-duration space missions expose astronauts to microgravity, radiation, confinement, fluid redistribution, and circadian disruption, which together induce physiological adaptations, including cardiovascular hemodynamics. Emerging evidence suggests that spaceflight may modulate hemostasis and potentially increase thrombotic risk in the head/neck; however, the association of circadian disruption and hemostasis in space, and its ground-based analogs, has yet to be systematically evaluated. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from real-spaceflight missions and ground-based analo

Changes of EEG beta band power and functional connectivity during spaceflight: a retrospective study.

Spaceflight exposes astronauts to unique conditions like microgravity, which may affect brain function, though it remains underexplored compared to other physiological systems. Astronauts often report temporary neurological symptoms, such as disorientation, visual disturbances, and motor issues, potentially linked to structural and electrophysiological brain changes. To investigate this, electroencephalography (EEG) is a reliable tool to study brain activity in space, measuring oscillatory activity and functional connectivity (FC). This study analyzed EEG data from five male astronauts during

To boldly go where no microRNAs have gone before: spaceflight impact on risk for small-for-gestational-age infants.

In the era of renewed space exploration, comprehending the effects of the space environment on human health, particularly for deep space missions, is crucial. While extensive research exists on the impacts of spaceflight, there is a gap regarding female reproductive risks. We hypothesize that space stressors could have enduring effects on female health, potentially increasing risks for future pregnancies upon return to Earth, particularly related to small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses. To address this, we identify a shared microRNA (miRNA) signature between SGA and the space environment, c

Radiation-induced ophthalmic risks of long duration spaceflight: Current investigations and interventions.

PURPOSE: As the average duration of space missions increases, astronauts will experience longer periods of exposure to risks of long duration space flight including microgravity and radiation. The risks from long-term exposure to space radiation remains ill-defined. We review the current literature on the possible and known risks of radiation on the eye (including radiation retinopathy) after long duration spaceflight. METHODS: A PubMed and Google Scholar search of the English language ophthalmic literature was performed from inception to July 11, 2022. The following search terms were utilize

Regulation of Bone by Mechanical Loading, Sex Hormones, and Nerves: Integration of Such Regulatory Complexity and Implications for Bone Loss during Space Flight and Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis.

During evolution, the development of bone was critical for many species to thrive and function in the boundary conditions of Earth. Furthermore, bone also became a storehouse for calcium that could be mobilized for reproductive purposes in mammals and other species. The critical nature of bone for both function and reproductive needs during evolution in the context of the boundary conditions of Earth has led to complex regulatory mechanisms that require integration for optimization of this tissue across the lifespan. Three important regulatory variables include mechanical loading, sex hormones
