Ultrastructural aspects of mucosas in endemic pemphigus foliaceus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether ultrastructural changes present in clinically normal oral mucosa could occur in the mucosas of patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF) or fogo selvagem (wildfire). PATIENTS: Surgical biopsy specimens were taken from the foreskin of 8 patients with EPF and 3 control subjects, the uterine cervix and vaginal wall of 9 patients with EPF and 2 controls, and the oral mucosa of 5 patients with EPF and 4 controls. The patients received a clinical and histopathologic diagnosis of EPF and all had clinically normal oral and genital mucosas. RESULTS: In the pati

Lessons learned from community-scale use of temporary refuge areas during the Camp Fire.

BACKGROUND: Wildfires can quickly spread or ignite within wildland-urban interface areas, leading to life-threatening scenarios for people who cannot evacuate in time or who become trapped during evacuations. One such example of a dire scenario is the Camp Fire, which occurred in Butte County, California, in 2018. AIMS: To provide insight into lessons learned from the evacuation during the Camp Fire and introduce a contingency, called temporary fire refuge areas, that communities can incorporate into their evacuation planning and response. METHODS: An in-depth case study of the Camp Fire was…

Advancing Atmospheric Detection of Weakly Absorbing Reactive Trace Gases Using the FY-3E/HIRAS-II TIR Sounder on a Dawn-Dusk Orbit.

Weakly absorbing reactive trace gases play important roles in the atmospheric environment and usually have short lifetimes ranging from seco … pping stone for subsequent research in concentration retrieval. The case of the ammonia column over wildfires retrieved using neural network technology initially demonstrates that FY-3E/HIRAS-II can improve our understanding of the diurnal variation of trace gases by complementing measurements at dawn and dusk.

Combustion conditions influence toxicity of flame-generated soot to ocular (ARPE-19) cells.

Soot is a prevalent aerosol found both indoors and outdoors that has several sources, such as natural (e.g., wildfires), civilian (e.g., cooking), or military (e.g., burn pit operation). Additionally, within the sources, factors that influence the physicochemical properties of the soot include combustion temperature, oxygen availability, and fuel type. Being able to reproduce soot in the laboratory and systematically assess its toxicity is important in the pursuit of elucidating pathologies associated with its exposure. Of the organs of interest, we targeted the eye given the scant attention r…

Volatile Organic Compounds Inside Homes Impacted by Smoke from the Marshall Fire.

Wildfires at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) have been increasing in frequency over recent decades due to increased human development and shifting climatic patterns. The work presented here focuses on the impacts of a WUI fire on indoor air using field measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by Proton-Transfer-Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS). We found a slow decrease in VOC mixing ratios over the course of roughly 5 weeks starting 10 days after the fire, and those levels decreased to ∼20% of the initial indoor value on average. The VOC composition could be d…

Yeast communities of primary and secondary peat swamp forests in southern Thailand.

Khanthuli peat swamp forest (PSF) is one of a few fertile peat swamp forests that remain in Thailand. It is composed of primary PSF and some areas which have been degraded to secondary PSF due to drought, wildfires and land conversion, which have resulted in a decrease in peat layers and change in the species of the plant community. In this study, diversity of yeasts in peat from both primary and secondary PSF areas of the Khanthuli PSF was determined based on culture-dependent approaches, using dilution plate and enrichment techniques. A total of 66 yeast isolates were identified by the analy…

Application of Displacement-Current-Governed Triboelectric Nanogenerator in an Electrostatic Discharge Protection System for the Next-Generation Green Tire.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD), a universal phenomenon derived from tribocharging and electrostatic induction, has always been regarded as a negative effect because it may cause various types of damage, such as gas explosions, wildfires, failure of integrated circuits, and so on. Normally, ESD is avoided by conducting those harmful charges through the surface or the whole bulk, by means of improving the conductivity of dielectrics or directly using conductive materials. However, the first approach compromises other performances at the same time, whereas the second one can be applied in only a f…

Volatile and Within-Needle Terpene Changes to Douglas-fir Trees Associated With Douglas-fir Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Attack.

Mass attack by tree-killing bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) brings about large chemical changes in host trees that can have important ecological consequences. For example, mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) attack increases emission of terpenes by lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.), affecting foliage flammability with consequences for wildfires. In this study, we measured chemical changes to Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Mirb.) Franco) foliage in response to attack by Douglas-fir beetles (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins) as trees di…

A daily peat moisture code for monitoring and predicting peatland fire danger.

Peatlands, ecosystems with deep (>40 cm) organic soils, play diverging roles in landscape wildfire regimes based on their moisture status. When peatlands are dry they can be the source of high-severity fire and carbon and smoke emissions. The daily Peat Moisture Code (PMC) presented here calculates the change in storage in the peatland water balance and accounts for peatland ecohydrological feedbacks by integrating peat hydrophysical properties using novel equations. Evapotranspiration is modelled using a modified Priestley-Taylor method. The change in water storage is converted to an index (t

Shewanella oneidensis grows on biochar as an electron acceptor via direct contact without flavins.

Pyrogenic black carbon, such as biochar and wildfire char, possesses a reversible electron storage capacity (ESC), allowing it to serve as an electron donor or acceptor for microorganisms. However, not all the ESC is bioavailable, and the proportion available varies by culture. We hypothesized microbes capable of producing soluble redox mediators could access the ESC in biochar interior and thus utilize a higher percentage of the ESC than organisms without a mediator. To test this hypothesis, we grew wild-type Shewanella oneidensis (MR-1) and Δ bfe MR-1, a mutant incapable of exporting flavins

Using Low-Cost Sensors for Fenceline Monitoring to Measure Emissions from Prescribed Fires.

Prescribed burning is a highly effective way to reduce wildfire risk; however, prescribed fires release harmful pollutants. Quantifying emissions from prescribed fires is valuable for atmospheric modeling and understanding impacts on nearby communities. Emissions are commonly reported as emission factors, which are traditionally calculated cumulatively over an entire combustion event. However, cumulative emission factors do not capture variability in emissions throughout a combustion event. Reliable emission factor calculations require knowledge of the state of the plume, which is unavailable

Challenges in studying air pollution to neurodegenerative diseases.

Exposure to ambient air pollution is ubiquitous and unavoidable. While associations between air pollution and cardiometabolic diseases are well-established, its role in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), has only recently begun to emerge. This narrative review provides an overview of current findings and discusses challenges and opportunities for future epidemiologic research. Mechanistically, air pollution may contribute to ADRD and PD through neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and cerebrovascular damage. Long-t

A genome catalogue of mercury-methylating bacteria and archaea from sediments of a boreal river facing human disturbances.

Methyl mercury, a toxic compound, is produced by anaerobic microbes and magnifies in aquatic food webs, affecting the health of animals and humans. The exploration of mercury methylators based on genomes is still limited, especially in the context of river ecosystems. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a genome catalogue of potential mercury-methylating microorganisms. This was based on the presence of hgcAB from the sediments of a river affected by two run-of-river hydroelectric dams, logging activities and a wildfire. Through the use of genome-resolved metagenomics, we discovered a

Climate change and its influence in nephron mass.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The consequences of climate change, including heat and extreme weather events impact kidney function in adults and children. The impacts of climate change on kidney development during gestation and thereby on kidney function later in life have been poorly described. Clinical evidence is summarized to highlight possible associations between climate change and nephron mass. RECENT FINDINGS: Pregnant women are vulnerable to the effects of climate change, being less able to thermoregulate, more sensitive to the effects of dehydration, and more susceptible to infections. Exposur

Developing and diagnosing climate change indicators of regional aerosol optical properties.

Given the importance of aerosol particles to radiative transfer via aerosol-radiation interactions, a methodology for tracking and diagnosing causes of temporal changes in regional-scale aerosol populations is illustrated. The aerosol optical properties tracked include estimates of total columnar burden (aerosol optical depth, AOD), dominant size mode (Ångström exponent, AE), and relative magnitude of radiation scattering versus absorption (single scattering albedo, SSA), along with metrics of the structure of the spatial field of these properties. Over well-defined regions of North America, t
