Little is known about the effect of helminth infections on the natural gynecological and pregnancy course. Our goal was to assess the relationship between Wuchereria bancrofti and hookworm (HW) infections with pregnancy course and outcome in a group of 82 women living in a rural area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Demographics and information on gynecological and obstetrical histories were collected retrospectively with standardized questionnaires. Wuchereria bancrofti and HW infections were diagnosed using a filarial antigen-detection test and the Kato-Katz method, respectively. Ana…

Nigeria has a high burden of vector borne diseases such as malaria and lymphatic filariasis (LF). This study aimed to determine the species composition of mosquitoes in Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria as well as determine their role in malaria and LF transmission. Adult mosquitoes were collected by Pyrethrum Spray Catch (PSC) and identified and graded according to their abdominal conditions. The mosquitoes were dissected to determine the parity status and to check for microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. The presence of circumsporozoite protein of Plasmodium falciparum was examined using ELISA. A …

BACKGROUND: The filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold, 1877), Brugia malayi (Brug, 1927) and B. timori Partono, Purnomo, Dennis, Atmosoedjono, Oemijati & Cross, 1977 cause lymphatic diseases in humans in the tropics, while B. pahangi (Buckley & Edeson, 1956) infects carnivores and causes zoonotic diseases in humans in Malaysia. Wuchereria bancrofti, W. kalimantani Palmieri, Pulnomo, Dennis & Marwoto, 1980 and six out of ten Brugia spp. have been described from Australia, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka and India. However, the origin and evolution of the species in the Wuchereria-Brugia cl…

We hereby describe the case of a giant scrotal elephantiasis due to infection by Wuchereria bancrofti, imported in Belgium. We briefly discuss diagnostic methods, their subtlety, and therapeutic possibilities.

Reported are results for 23 Haitian patients with capillary Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaremias greater than 30 mf/20 cmm blood. In capillary blood, the number of microfilariae was 0.9 to 7.8 times greater than expected when compared with that in venous blood. When the values for venous blood and capillary blood from these high count patients were plotted, the simple linear regression y = a + bx (r2 = .36) and the exponential function y = aebx (r2 = .34) both represented the relationship. However, when values for high and low count patients were plotted, the power function y = axb (r2 = 0.82)…

Microfilariae found in a breast nodule of a patient with tropical pulmonary eosinophilia were identified as Wuchereria bancrofti, confirming that the tropical pulmonary eosinophilia syndrome may be associated with infections caused by this species of filarial worm.

It is estimated that 120 million people worldwide are affected by filariasis. In the South East and South Asian region, Wuchereria bancrofti is the most prevalent parasite causing filariais in 99.4 % of cases. In the present case the parasite was a cause of unexplained ascitis in a young female whose previous cytological report was suspicious in nature. Extensive physical and radiological assesment was not able to determine the cause of ascitis. Repeat cytological examinantion revealed a few microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. The patient was diagnosed as a case of low density microfilaremi…

Parasite host switches may trigger disease emergence, but prehistoric host ranges are often unknowable. Lymphatic filariasis and loiasis are major human diseases caused by the insect-borne filarial nematodes Brugia, Wuchereria and Loa. Here we show that the genomes of these nematodes and seven tropical bird lineages exclusively share a novel retrotransposon, AviRTE, resulting from horizontal transfer (HT). AviRTE subfamilies exhibit 83-99% nucleotide identity between genomes, and their phylogenetic distribution, paleobiogeography and invasion times suggest that HTs involved filarial nematodes.…

Filarial parasites infect an estimated 140 million people worldwide. Wuchereria bancrofti, Onchocerca volvulus, Loa loa and Mansonella perstans are responsible for most filarial infections in sub-Saharan Africa. We describe the prevalence and the clinical characteristics of filariasis in symptomatic patients in Goundi Sanitary district:167 patients were enrolled (99 men, 68 women). M. perstans microfilariae were isolated in peripheral blood in 164 cases, while Loa loa and Wuchereria bancrofti filariasis were diagnosed in only six and three cases, respectively. The most frequent filariasis obse…

Filaria endemicity is probably gradually increasing over the years in Bagdogra town, district Darjeeling (West Bengal). Of 1511 night blood smears examined, 35 were found positive for Wuchereria bancrofti (mf rate 2.32%). The microfilaria (mf) rates for males and females were 2.84% and 1.79 % respectively. The age of these positives ranged from 5-45 years. The mf rate was highest (4.46%) in the age group of 20-29 years. All mf carriers were local residents of Bagdogra and Wuchereria bancrofti was only the infection encountered. Mean microfilaria density was 7.71 per 20 cmm. of blood, whereas M…

Filariasis is a major health problem in South Asia, particularly India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Pakistan was presumed to be not affected. We report for the first time confirmed cases of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) in indigenous patients as a result of infection with Wuchereria bancrofti. Following clinical examination, total leukocyte and eosinophil counts were recorded. Parasitological examinations included blood for microfilariae and stool and urine for eggs of intestinal parasites. Total immunoglobulin (Ig) E and specific antifilarial IgG were measured. Suspected cases of TPE we…

The breast is a common site of filarial infection in females in Sri Lanka. We report our experience with 13 cases of filarial breast nodules, 12 containing adult worms and the other only microfilariae. In five of these cases the species was identified as Wuchereria bancrofti.

Current methods for detecting and identifying filariae in mosquitoes are laborious and time consuming. With today's technology, we can reasonably expect development of rapid, sensitive and specific assays for detecting and identifying filariae in naturally infected mosquito populations. Progress in developing such assays is reviewed.

Of 58 patients in Leogane, Haiti, infected with Wuchereria bancrofti and treated with diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC-C) at 6 mg/kg per day for 12 days (= 72 mg/kg), 38 (66%) of 58 continued to harbor low numbers of circulating microfilariae (median microfilariae could be demonstrated in 7 (37%) of 19 patients, with a median microfilarial density of 8 mf/ml. Three patients who continued to have circulating microfilariae after two courses of DEC-C were treated a third time. Two (67%) of the three remained microfilaria positive, both with 1 mf/ml. The results of this study clearly indicate that …

Filariasis is an endemic infection caused by nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugya malayi, highly prevalent in Bihar, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The disease mainly affects the lymphatics, both channels and nodes. Breast filariasis is rather uncommon, and might mimic a neoplastic breast lump.

Filariasis, a mosquito borne disease is endemic in many tropical countries and sub tropics including India. A 44 years old male presented with signs and symptoms of pleural effusion. Pleural fluid on examination was exdudative in nature and showed presence of microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti.
