Sensors based on conductive hydrogels have received extensive attention in various fields, such as artificial intelligence, electronic skin, and health monitoring. However, the poor resilience and fatigue resistance, icing, and water loss of traditional hydrogels greatly limit their application. Herein, an ionic conductive organohydrogel (PAC-Zn) was prepared for the first time by copolymerization of cardanol and acrylic acid in water/1,3-butanediol as a binary solvent system. A very small amount of cardanol (1% cardanol of total monomers) could not only significantly improve the tensile stren

BACKGROUND: Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited disease caused by mutations in the arylsulfatase B (ARSB) gene. MPS VI is a multisystemic disease resulting from a deficiency in arylsulfatase B causing an accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in the tissues and organs of the body. In this report, we present the case of a 16-year-old Chinese male who presented with vision loss caused by corneal opacity. MPS VI was confirmed by genetic diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old Chinese male presented with a one-year history of binocular vision loss. The b

AIMS: Among musicians, string players have the highest prevalence for musculoskeletal overuse. Playing a violin or viola requires rapid, repetitive, and complicated movements of the hands and fingers. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine whether violin/viola, violin/cello, and violin/French horn players experience more intense musculoskeletal pain than other instrumentalists.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 590 orchestra musicians (354 male, 236 female, mean age 36 yrs). Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess pain of the back, neck, shoulder, face, jaw, and upper e

BACKGROUND: Spondylarthritis (SpA) significantly affects sacroiliac, intervertebral and peripheral joints. Patients with SpA suffer from increased cardiovascular risk (CVR). The endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) system critically perpetuates vascular repair. The aim of the study was to evaluate circulating EPCs in axial (ax)SpA with special attention on parameters of disease activity and CVR.
METHODS: Disease activity and functional impairment were quantified in 50 axSpA patients by using standardized parameters (Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI), C-reactive protein

Linkeropathies are a group of syndromes characterized by short stature, radio-ulnar synostosis, decreased bone density, congenital contractures and dislocations, joint laxity, broad digits, brachycephaly, small mouth, prominent eyes, short or webbed neck, congenital heart defects and mild developmental delay. Linkeropathies are due to enzymatic defects in the synthesis of the common linker region that joins the core proteins to their glycosaminoglycan (GAG) side chains. The enzyme glucuronyltransferase 1, encoded by B3GAT3, adds the last four saccharides comprising the linker region. Mutations

Nakajo-Nishimura syndrome (ORPHA2615; also registered as Nakajo syndrome in OMIM#256040) is a distinct inherited inflammatory and wasting disease, originally reported from Japan. This disease usually begins in early infancy with a pernio-like rash, especially in winter. The patients develop periodic high fever and nodular erythema-like eruptions, and gradually progress lipomuscular atrophy in the upper body, mainly the face and the upper extremities, to show the characteristic thin facial appearance and long clubbed fingers with joint contractures. So far about 30 cases have been reported from

This paper presents the experiences of the thumb reconstruction with osteofasciocutaneous reverse flap (OFCR flap). In the period between 1987 and 2000 the OFCR flap was used in 15 patients. The youngest of them was 18 and the oldest was 38 years of age. The average age was 25.4. All the patients had posttraumatic amputations. Defects on proximal phalangae and a part of metacarpal bone occurred in two cases. In one case there was an amputation on the base level of proximal phalanx and the metacarpophalangeal (MPH) joint was preserved. In all cases of reconstruction the OFCR flap was used, whic

This article elucidates the clinical picture in Cohen syndrome (MIM 216550), an autosomal recessive disorder that is overrepresented in Finland. The diagnosis is based on the typical clinical picture: nonprogressive psychomotor retardation, motor clumsiness and microcephaly, typical facial features, childhood hypotonia and hyperextensibility of the joints, ophthalmologic findings of retinochoroidal dystrophy and myopia in patients over 5 years of age, and granulocytopenia. In a nationwide study, 29 Finnish patients were investigated. Magnetic resonance images of the brain with quantitative str

In Western Europe the Carpal-tunnel syndrome (CTS) is rarely regarded as a work injury, but in the USA this syndrome is usually considered to be work-related compression of a peripheral nerve, and the labour unions are already concerned about it. The median nerve can be squeezed by the flexor tendons of the index and middle fingers. These tendons pass dorsally from the median nerve through the carpal canal, where the nerve is subject to pressure when the tendons stretch whilst the wrist is flexed. Measurements in the carpal canal confirm this mechanism and show that, whilst grasping with the m

SATB2-associated syndrome (SAS) is a multisystemic disorder characterized by developmental delay, moderate to profound intellectual disability, speech delay and/or absent speech, behavioral issues such as autistic tendencies, agitation or aggressive outbursts, self-injury, impulsivity, hyperactivity, anxiety and sleeping difficulties. Alterations in the SATB2 gene have been identified as pathogenic causes of SAS. No formal clinical diagnostic criteria have been established for SAS, and molecular disruption of SATB2 is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. To investigate the molecular pathogenesi
