Opportunistic infection complicating acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Clinical features of 25 cases.

Twenty-five cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) complicated by opportunistic infections were diagnosed at Lenox Hill Hospital during an 18 month period and followed for at least 1 year or until the patients' deaths. Twenty-three patients were homosexual men, including 1 i.v. drug user, and 2 were heterosexual i.v. drug users, including the sole woman. Seventy infections were diagnosed. The commonest etiologic agents included Candida albicans, Pneumocystis carinii, cytomegalovirus, and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare. Less frequent pathogens included Cryptococcus neoformans,

Enteric diseases of homosexual men.

Certain enteric ailments are particularly common among homosexual men. They are primarily infectious diseases and include not only such common venereal diseases as gonorrhea and syphilis but also infections not usually regarded as being sexually transmitted. Among the latter are shigellosis, salmonellosis, giardiasis, and amebiasis. Patients' symptoms are non-specific and seldom helpful in diagnosing particular diseases. The practitioner must be prepared to identify a number of infections with similar presentations that may occur singly or together in gay men. Gonorrhea is probably the most co

Hormones and sexual differentiation of the brain.

Male rats castrated on the first day of life exhibited predominantly heterotypical (homosexual) behaviour after androgen substitution in adulthood. In addition, an increased evocability of a positive feedback effect of oestrogen was observed in such genetic males. In homosexual men, an increased evocability of a positive oestrogen feedback on luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion was also found as compared to heterosexual men. These findings suggest that male homosexuality may be based, at least in part, on andogen deficiency during a critical period of brain differentiation. In addition, we have

Boy Bi! The Association Between HIV Knowledge, PrEP Stigma, Bisexual Contact, and Binegativity in a Sample of Undergraduate Students.

BACKGROUND: Binegativity (negative attitudes and beliefs towards bisexual people) towards bisexual men includes inaccurate stereotypes of sexual promiscuity and serving as vectors of HIV to heterosexual women. College students' HIV knowledge has been negatively associated with homonegative attitudes towards gay men; however, limited studies have explored the link between HIV knowledge and binegativity towards bisexual men. Like bisexual men, people who take HIV prevention medications (i.e., PrEP) are also stigmatized as being sexually irresponsible and promiscuous. However, limited studies hav

HIV/AIDS Notification Status and Trends in the Republic of Korea, 2021-2025.

OBJECTIVES: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a critical public health priority requiring sustained prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment. This surveillance report examined 5-year trends in newly notified HIV cases in the Republic of Korea (ROK) from 2021 to 2025. METHODS: Annual notification counts and demographic characteristics for 2021-2025 were examined using the "2025 Annual Report on the Notified HIV/AIDS" in the ROK, which compiles cases reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Transmission routes and testing motivations among Korean

Persistent Patterns of Licit and Illicit Drug Use Among Gender and Sexuality Diverse Women in Australia: Results From a Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Gender and sexuality diverse women consistently report higher rates of licit and illicit drug use than heterosexual women. Longitudinal data are essential to understanding these patterns yet remain limited. We established a cohort to examine prevalence and changes in use. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study, the Understanding Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer Women's Alcohol, Drug Use and Health (UnLEASH) study, with data collected at baseline (May-October 2021) and follow-up (August-November 2022). Participants self-reported past-4-week, past 12 months and lifetime use o

Perceived Effectiveness of Cigar Warnings Among Young People in the U.S.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of warning size and format on cigar packaging in influencing youth and young adult smoking behaviors is not well understood. This study tested these cigar warning characteristics among youth and young adults who use or are susceptible to using little cigars or cigarillos. METHODS: The study recruited 506 U.S. youth and young adults, aged 15-20 years, between April and June 2023. Participants reported ever or past 30-day use of little cigars or cigarillos or were susceptible to using little cigars or cigarillos. A 2 × 2 between-subjects online experiment was con

Restrictive Masculinity Norms and Behavioral Health Outcomes Among Rhode Island Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictive masculinity norms (RMNs), characterized by emotional suppression, dominance, and risk-taking, have been linked to adverse health among cisgender heterosexual men. Little is known about how RMNs operate among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, particularly transgender young adults.  Methods: Data were from the 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey, a cross-sectional, web-based survey of adults aged 18-25 years. Analyses were restricted to SGM participants (n=438), with sub-analyses among transgender young adults (n=100). RMNs were measured using a 12-item que

Trends in Hepatitis C Virus Infection Prevalence Among People With HIV in Spain Over 2 Decades (2002-2023).

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has significantly impacted people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Harm reduction programs, changing transmission patterns, and direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) have profoundly altered HIV/HCV coinfection trends. This study evaluates HCV prevalence among people with HIV in Spain over 2 decades. METHODS: We conducted 9 cross-sectional studies (2002-2023) in 39-43 centers. Sampled individuals were randomly sampled from people with HIV actively followed up at these centers, with proportional allocation. Main outcomes included the prevalence of anti-HCV

Risk profiles for acute hepatitis B and C from 2004 to 2024 in Italy: A cluster and disproportionality analysis from the SEIEVA registry.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the decline in HBV and HCV incidence in Italy, identifying at-risk populations remains a priority. We aimed to identify risk profiles for acute HBV and HCV infections and possible signals of reporting disproportionality. METHODS: The study used data from the Integrated Epidemiological System of Acute Viral Hepatitis from 2004 to 2024. K-medoids clustering was applied to identify acute hepatitis profiles, considering demographic characteristics and major risk factors (drug use, nosocomial risk, men who have sex with men - MSM, risky sexual behaviour, living with HBsAg+ pers

How PrEPared is our campus? Insights from a cross-sectional study on awareness and attitudes towards HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) amongst University of Saskatchewan (Canada) students.

BACKGROUND: The number of new HIV infections in young adults is increasing in Canada. Research is lacking on the awareness and acceptability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) amongst Canadian university students. We conducted this study to assess awareness and attitudes towards PrEP amongst University of Saskatchewan students. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was sent to 22,004 actively enrolled university students. The survey explored students’ perceived risk of HIV, awareness of PrEP, and attitudes towards PrEP use. Statistical analyses were performed on all completed respons

Retrospective challenges to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among people living with HIV-A qualitative analysis using the COM-B framework.

Biomedical interventions to prevent transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), are available in England for free at specialised sexual health services (SSHS). Yet the number of new HIV diagnoses made in England among people exposed to HIV through heterosexual sex and among people of Black ethnicity are increasing. Published research discusses the barriers and facilitators to PrEP among people not living with HIV. We add to this literature by qualitatively exploring the retrospective barriers and facilitators to PrEP use and HIV prevention more

Interventions for thriving in HIV serodiscordant relationships in Sub-Saharan Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: HIV serodiscordant relationships, where one partner is HIV-positive and the other is HIV-negative, present unique challenges despite biomedical advances including U = U (Undetectable = Untransmittable). Effective interventions are crucial to support these couples in managing their relationships, promoting treatment adherence, and reducing the risk of HIV transmission. This scoping review aims to identify, map, and evaluate the range of interventions designed to support thriving and the maintenance of healthy relationships among HIV serodiscordant couples. METHODS: A comprehensive s

Temporal trends in viral setpoint and peak CD4 + cell count soon after HIV-1 seroconversion.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether HIV-1 virulence, as measured by prognostic markers soon after seroconversion, has changed over time and across subgroups in the context of widespread ART availability. DESIGN: Observational cohort study of individuals with well estimated HIV-1 seroconversion dates recruited from clinics in eight European countries and Canada (CASCADE Collaboration). METHODS: We analyzed data from 21 933 participants who seroconverted 1980-2014, while ART-naïve and AIDS-free. Piecewise linear mixed models with one knot at 1 year after seroconversion for log 10 HIV-1 RNA (setpoin

Should we still treat asymptomatic Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis contacts in the era of NAATs? Reviewing data from the GetaKit study to inform practice.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine positivity rates for participants in the GetaKit study who identified as asymptomatic contacts of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and/or Chlamydia trachomatis (CT). Our goal was to shed light on current discrepancies between international sexually transmitted infection (STI) guidelines, some of which recommend blanket empiric treatment for all NG and CT contacts (eg, Canadian and United States guidelines) versus others which recommend waiting for positive results (BASHH, Australian, and European). METHODS: We extracted data for the period of 1 June 2023 to 30 Jun

A case of Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma (LCNEC) treated with tarlatamab.

UNLABELLED: Transgender and gender-diverse young adults, most of whom identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer, encounter considerable health, social, and systemic inequalities, leading to higher rates of trauma exposure, mental health difficulties, and suicidal thoughts and behaviours compared to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. The complex relationship between sexual orientation, gender identity, and suicide has received considerable attention, primarily from quantitative research focused on risk narratives, rather than an individual's lived experiences or specific healthcare need

Perspectives on Trauma Treatment, Self-Management Strategies, and Attitudes Toward Psychedelic Therapies in Individuals with Psychological Trauma Symptoms.

Background: Current trauma treatment options often fail to meet patients' needs. Despite the availability of established interventions, many trauma treatments fail to adequately meet patients' needs. In parallel, there has been renewed scientific and public interest in the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and related compounds, accompanied by increasing unsupervised use. This underscores the need to examine patients' willingness to engage with these therapies should they receive regulatory approval and to better characterize patterns of self-administration in order to inform patient-cente
