Tissue-specific expression and in vivo regulation of zebrafish orthologues of mammalian genes related to symptomatic hypomagnesemia.

Introduction of zebrafish as a model for human diseases with symptomatic hypomagnesemia urges to identify the regulatory transport genes involved in zebrafish Mg(2+) physiology. In humans, mutations related to hypomagnesemia are located in the genes TRPM6 and CNNM2, encoding for a Mg(2+) channel and transporter, respectively; EGF (epidermal growth factor); SLC12A3, which encodes for the Na(+)-Cl(-) co-transporter NCC; KCNA1 and KCNJ10, encoding for the K(+) channels Kv1.1 and Kir4.1, respectively; and FXYD2, which encodes for the γ-subunit of the Na(+),K(+)-ATPase. Orthologues of these genes w

Severe Mg-deficiency is not associated with endothelial cell activation in mouse lung.

Several experimental and clinical studies suggest that the lungs are a specific target of Mg-hypomagnesemia, which is a common side effect of cyclosporin A therapy. Due to the possible effect of hypomagnesemia on lung allograft function, the aim of this study was to evaluate endothelial cell (EC) activation and tissue remodelling (apoptosis) in the lungs from mice fed Mg-deficient diets. Immunocytochemical examinations did not reveal any inflammatory process in Mg-deficient mice, infiltration of leukocytes (CD45+ cells), expression of I-Ab class II molecules, E-selectin or ICAM-1 on ECs, and a

Nutritional status of healthcare professionals in primary health and social care.

Balanced nutrition is crucial for healthcare workers' health and performance. Despite extensive knowledge of healthy eating, they face organizational and behavioral barriers leading to suboptimal diets. This study aimed to compare anthropometric status and dietary intake among male physicians, female physicians, and nurses in primary healthcare, and to identify deficiencies or excesses of key nutrients. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in six clinics in Karaganda (2023-2024), involving 202 participants (22 male physicians, 67 female physicians, and 113 nurses). Body compositio

Genetic diversity for grain nutrients in wild emmer wheat: potential for wheat improvement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Micronutrient malnutrition, particularly zinc and iron deficiency, afflicts over three billion people worldwide due to low dietary intake. In the current study, wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides), the progenitor of domesticated wheat, was tested for (1) genetic diversity in grain nutrient concentrations, (2) associations among grain nutrients and their relationships with plant productivity, and (3) the association of grain nutrients with the eco-geographical origin of wild emmer accessions. METHODS: A total of 154 genotypes, including wild emmer accessi

Endocrine-Immune Crosstalk in Pediatric Autoimmune Diseases: A Systematic Review of the Role of Micronutrients, with Emphasis on Vitamin D.

Background: Pediatric autoimmune disorders are increasingly common, yet outcomes remain poor due to delayed diagnosis and lack of appropriate actions. Immune system dysfunction frequently coincides with deficiencies in essential micronutrients and cofactors, including vitamin D. Objectives: This study evaluated the contribution of vitamin D and cofactor (e.g., magnesium) deficiencies to impaired endocrine secretion and autoimmune susceptibility, which may trigger or exacerbate autoimmunity in children. Methods: This systematic review examines the complex interactions between micronutrients-par

Effect of Water Hardness on Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Fatty Acid Salts.

The acute aquatic toxicity of anionic surfactants, including fatty acid salts, changes depending on water hardness. Generally, the acute aquatic toxicity of Daphnia magna is caused by the adsorption of surfactants and other substances. Despite the low environmental risk, the effect of water hardness on the acute aquatic toxicity of soap should be discussed to improve the assessment accuracy. Previously, we evaluated the effects of water hardness and the presence of an adsorbent on the acute aquatic toxicity of soap by performing an immobility test using D. magna in accordance with Japanese Ind

Diets realistic for westernized people significantly effect lipoproteins, calcium, zinc, vitamins C, E, B6 and haematology in vervet monkeys.

This report describes measurements of 50 variables in adult, female, reproductively inactive Vervet monkeys during prolonged nutrition realistic for westernized people. Dietary treatments consisted of an atherogenic Western diet (WD) and a prudent Western diet (PD). Ingredients were normal foods for man and no extra cholesterol was added. Fortification of both diets with vitamin C after cooking was necessary to prevent deficiency. Randomised groups of Vervet monkeys received either the PD or WD for 47 months, while a third group was fed WD for 20 months and then PD for 27 months (WD-PD). Befor

Total gastrectomy for severe proton pump inhibitor-induced hypomagnesemia in a MEN1/Zollinger Ellison syndrome patient.

We report here the first case of life-threatening hypomagnesemia in a Zollinger-Ellison syndrome patient with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome. The severe symptomatic hypomagnesemia proved to be due to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), but withdrawal of PPIs led to early severe peptic complications despite a substitution by histamine H2-receptor antagonist therapy. Simultaneous management of life-threatening hypomagnesemia, severe gastric acid hypersecretion and MEN1-associated gastrinomas was complex. A total gastrectomy was performed in order to definitely preclude the use of

Effect of the entorhinal cortex on ictal discharges in low-Mg²⁺-induced epileptic hippocampal slice models.

The hippocampus plays an important role in the genesis of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, and the entorhinal cortex (EC) may affect the hippocampal network activity because of the heavy interconnection between them. However, the mechanism by which the EC affects the discharge patterns and the transmission mode of epileptiform discharges within the hippocampus needs further study. Here, multielectrode recording techniques were used to study the spatiotemporal characteristics of epileptiform discharges in adult mouse hippocampal slices and combined EC-hippocampal slices and determine whether and

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC): report of three cases with a novel mutation in CLDN19 gene.

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is caused by mutation in the genes coding for tight junction proteins Claudin-16 and Claudin-19. Affected individuals usually develop nephrocalcinosis and progressive renal failure; some of them may have ophthalmologic involvement as well. Phenotypic description of three affected individuals from the same Middle Eastern kindred (two sisters and their cousin) is presented. This includes both clinical and laboratory findings upon initial presentation and subsequent follow-up. Mole

Early and late renal adverse effects after potentially nephrotoxic treatment for childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: Great improvements in diagnostics and treatment for malignant disease in childhood have led to a major increase in survival. However, childhood cancer survivors (CCS) are at great risk for developing adverse effects caused by multimodal treatment for their malignancy. Nephrotoxicity is one of these known (acute) side effects of several treatments, including cisplatin, carboplatin, ifosfamide, radiotherapy and nephrectomy, and can cause glomerular filtration rate impairment, proteinuria, tubulopathy and hypertension. However, evidence about the long-term effects of these treatments
