Trends in HIV/AIDS cases in Kyrgyzstan between 2012 and 2022: An ecological study.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS continues to exert a significant toll on health care systems and governments worldwide, including in Kyrgyzstan, impacting the health and well-being of millions. The aim of this study was to examine how the patterns of HIV transmission in Kyrgyzstan evolved between 2012 and 2022. METHODS: This ecological study employed retrospective data collection. Quantitative methods were employed to assess and analyse changes in patterns of HIV transmission, as well as co-infections such as HIV + hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV + hepatitis C virus (HCV), across individuals with varyin

Intersectionality and mental health in university students: a jeopardy index approach.

To explore the associations between current mental health symptoms and social disparities in university students. We recruited participants from nine public universities in Brazil, from August to November 2022, using online advertisements and in-person lectures. All participants completed an online survey containing social (sex, race/color, gender identity, sexual orientation, and income) and mental health assessments. The Jeopardy index was composed of social variables. The index considered zero points for subjects with less oppressive experienced characteristics (men, White, cisgender, heter

Mortality among sexual and gender minority populations: A systematic review.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations experience elevated rates of negative health outcomes (e.g., suicidality) and social determinants (e.g., poverty), which have been associated with general population mortality risk. Despite evidence of disparities in threats to well-being, it remains unclear whether SGM individuals have greater risk of mortality. This systematic review synthesized evidence on mortality among studies that included information about SGM. Three independent coders examined 6,255 abstracts, full-text reviewed 107 articles, and determined that 38 met inclusion criteria: 1

Understanding Opportunities for Prescribing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis at Two Academic Medical Centers in a High Priority Jurisdiction for Ending the HIV Epidemic.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective yet underutilized tool for HIV prevention. We examined opportunities for prescribing PrEP at two large, urban, academic healthcare institutions. We analyzed electronic medical record data for 1/1/2015-12/31/2021 among patients ≥ 18 years of age, with ≥ 1 negative HIV test with indications for PrEP. Eligible encounters were six months after a sexually transmitted infection, or when injection drug use (IDU) was documented. We categorized encounter setting, including the emergency department (ED) and obstetrics and gynecology/women's health (OBGYN)

Unsuppressed HIV viral load among people living with HIV by exposure category in British Columbia, Canada from 2005 to 2020: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a suppressed HIV plasma viral load (pVL) is critical to the optimal management of people living with HIV (PLWH), and to prevent HIV transmission. We examined trends and determinants of unsuppressed pVL among PLWH from April 2005 to March 2020 in British Columbia (BC), Canada by HIV exposure groups. METHODS: We analyzed data from all PLWH in BC identified in a provincial database linking testing, treatment, laboratory, pharmacy and administrative health data. For each year, individuals were classified as having an unsuppressed pVL if they were newly diagnosed, had any p

Qualitative insights into drug use safety strategies and social support among sexual minority women who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (SMW) experience higher rates of substance use relative to heterosexual women in the U.S. but remain an under-studied population. SMW who inject drugs (SMWWID) navigate an unpredictable drug market and may experience complex relationships within their social spheres. We explore cisgender SMWWID's strategies to maintain safety while injecting drugs, and the influence of their social support systems on those strategies. METHODS: We conducted N = 16 phone-based, semi-structured, in-depth interviews with SMWWID in Baltimore, Maryland between June-October 2021. Th

Improving women's health and well-being by exploring the impact of emotional, physical, and sexual intimate partner violence.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, several studies have highlighted the harmful mental and physical effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on its victims. However, more repeated measures research is needed to observe the long-term health and emotional effects of IPV. This includes how these impacts change when violence is reduced or ceases, such as when the perpetrator receives intervention. Further limitations of existing research include the lack of data on abuse frequency, severity, and impacts linked with specific forms of abuse. OBJECTIVES: This research explores the impacts on I

Genital, Oral, and Anal Type-specific Human Papillomavirus Concordance within Individuals and between Partners.

BACKGROUND: Studying human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype concordance between male and female partners and between multiple anatomic sites can help our understanding of HPV epidemiology. METHODS: Heterosexual couples ages 18+ formed within the past 6 months attended visits at 0, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. They answered questionnaires and provided genital, oral, and anal samples for HPV genotyping. We calculated observed/expected (O/E) concordance [with 95% confidence intervals (CI)] between anatomic sites of HPV genotype-specific infections across all visits and cumulatively (i.e., ever-positi

Intersectional health disparities among U.S. midlife and older adults focusing on sexual orientation and race and ethnicity: Evidence from a population-based study.

Older adults with sexual minority and racial/ethnic minority statuses are posited to face heightened health disadvantages due to multiple marginalizations. Yet, there remains a dearth of empirical evidence. We examined health disparities among Hispanic, Black, Asian, and additional sexual minorities of color aged 50 and older in the U.S. Using the 2013-2023 National Health Interview Survey data stratified by gender, we estimated joint disparities with adjusted risk differences (RDs) in 25 health indicators between sexual minorities of color and non-Hispanic White heterosexuals and tested for s

Beyond endocrine features in non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia: a narrative review of psychoneuro-social perspectives in pediatric and adolescent patients.

UNLABELLED: Non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH) is a late-onset, milder form of 21-hydroxylase deficiency marked by adrenal androgen excess. While endocrine aspects are well described, psychoneuro-social outcomes in pediatric and adolescent patients remain less clearly defined. A literature search of MEDLINE (PubMed) was conducted in July 2025 using "Non-Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia" with terms related to mental health, cognition, social adaptation, gender identity, sexual orientation, and heterozygous carriers. In females, androgen excess is frequently associated

Better outcomes of HIV-1 infection in women compared to men in an Ethiopian cohort.

Introduction: Sex influences the presentation and progression of various diseases. Studies regarding the impact of sex on the course and outcome of HIV may be biased due to differences in socioeconomic status between women and men and uneven sex representation, among other factors, resulting in conflicting data. Thus, this study compared men and women of similar ethnicity and social class who were diagnosed with HIV in two Israeli HIV care centers to minimize the effect of non-biological elements in this study cohort. Methods: A retrospective HIV cohort of 334 women and 223 men diagnosed from

Hotspots of Anal Cancer Screening in a High-risk Population: A Clinical Study on Free Provision, Best Method, Self-sampling, and Independent Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND/AIM: As of 2024, anal cancer (AC) has been steadily increasing worldwide but, due to insufficient evidence, anal cancer screening (ACS) has yet to be standardized. Furthermore, most high-risk people in the world have no help paying for it. Therefore, our primary endpoint was to assess the best screening method for these subjects through a provision that was free of charge (all costs were covered by the Italian public health service). Awareness-raising campaign, determination of risk factors, education on anal self-examination, and sampling (ASS) were secondary objectives. PATIENTS

Nicotine and cannabis vaping among early high school adolescents: Disparities of use across sociodemographic characteristics and associations with psychosocial factors.

Objective. This study examines whether adolescent nicotine and cannabis vaping types (i.e., nicotine-only, cannabis-only, and dual use) differ across sociodemographic and school characteristics (e.g., age, gender, sexual identity, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status [SES], school setting/type), and associations of vaping types with psychosocial factors. Methods. From 2021 to 2022, 9th and 10th grade adolescents (N = 2,476) in Colorado and Ohio participated in a survey measuring vaping behaviors and psychosocial factors including substance use attitudes, alcohol use, mental health, aggression,

Nonabstinence Among US Adults in Recovery From an Alcohol or Other Drug Problem.

OBJECTIVES: Most US treatment and recovery services are abstinence-based. However, many people in recovery from an alcohol or other drug (AOD) use problem do not abstain completely. This study estimated the prevalence of and characteristics associated with nonabstinence among US adults in recovery. METHODS: Nonabstinence-operationalized as past-month use of alcohol, illicit drugs, or nonmedical use of prescription drugs-was estimated among a sample of 3763 US adults in self-identified recovery from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, weighted to be nationally representative. Driving after substance use in Rhode Island adolescents: A cross-sectional analysis of surveillance data.

OBJECTIVE: Existing literature on driving under the influence during adolescence is sparse, especially for driving after the use of non-medical prescription drugs (DAP). This study examines the prevalence of driving after use of alcohol (DAA), cannabis (DAC), and DAP, and examines the role of several potential risk and protective factors. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the 2022 Rhode Island Study Survey, a cross-sectional survey of middle and high school students. Separate multivariable regressions were conducted for each outcome among lifetime users for each substance, controlling
