Sex differences in behavioral measures of anxiety in a recessive gene knockout (Pink1-/- ) rat model of Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by non-motor impairments including symptoms anxiety. These disturbances manifest in up to 40% of patients, most often early in the course of disease. While disruptive to all patients' lives, signs of anxiety are also more prevalent and/or more severe in female PD patients. Unfortunately, anxiolytic drugs are rarely used to manage these signs, as these medications can increase PD patients' risks for worsening of cognitive deficits and falls. The treatments commonly used in PD to improve patients' motor function or lessen signs of depressio

Association between nonsuicidal self-injury and borderline personality features in early-adolescent students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a disabling mental health condition marked by affective, cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal instability. Borderline personality features (BPF) often emerge during adolescence and can predict later BPD. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) - the deliberate, direct infliction of tissue damage without suicidal intent - has shown a strong association with BPF. This study examined the relationship between NSSI and BPF in early-adolescent students. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey, 244 first-cycle high-school students in Urmia, Iran, were

Using games to identify adolescents at risk for substance misuse-a proof-of-concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Early identification of adolescents at risk for substance use is critical for timely intervention. However, standard screening tools like CRAFFT (Car, Relax, Alone, Forget, Family and Friends, Trouble) and S2BI (Screening to Brief Intervention) face significant barriers, including adolescent disclosure reluctance, limited clinic privacy, and administrative challenges with paper-based forms. Digital games offer a promising alternative by generating behavioral data that may serve as digital biomarkers of substance use risk through engaging, low-burden gameplay. The objective of thi

The effects of cognitive behavioral therapy-based psychoeducation on quality of life, anxiety, and depression in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in childhood, associated not only with difficulties in attention and impulsivity but also with increased internalizing symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and a marked reduction in quality of life. Although pharmacological treatments play a central role in the management of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, there is a growing need for psychosocial interventions that target these emotional difficulties and quality of life outcomes while actively involving families. This study is novel

Impulsivity Is Related to Prescription Opioid Misuse in People With Chronic Pain Through Pain Catastrophizing and Emotional Distress.

Background: This study investigated the role of impulsivity as a personality variable predisposing to prescription opioid misuse. Pain catastrophizing, as well as anxiety, depression, and pain intensity, were postulated as potential serial mediators in this relationship. Methods: The sample comprised 366 individuals with chronic pain. We conducted correlational and serial mediation analyses to investigate the relationships between the study variables. Results: The results showed that pain catastrophizing partially mediated the relationship between impulsivity and prescription opioid misuse. De

The effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation on affective impulsivity in methamphetamine users: A randomized experimental study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is associated with significant impairments in impulsivity control, contributing to relapse and poor treatment outcomes. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) may be helpful in modulating these symptoms. This study aimed at [1] investigating the differential effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS on craving, affective impulsivity, and motor impulsivity; and [2] exploring the correlations between changes in affective impulsivity & drug craving, and alterations in resting-state elect

Effectiveness of bipolar-balanced prefrontal tDCS in patients with borderline personality disorder: Results from a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Preliminary evidence suggested that transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) could improve Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms, including impulsivity and emotion dysregulation. However, substantial heterogeneity in stimulation protocols and small sample sizes preclude definitive conclusions. METHODS: This double-blind RCT (active versus sham) investigated whether 15 daily sessions of bipolar-balanced prefrontal (anodal right DLPFC/cathodal left DLPFC) effectively reduced impulsivity and decision-making (primary outcomes). Improvements of depressive-anxiety sympt

Examination of preliminary behavioral and effective connectivity findings from treatment response to citalopram in cocaine use disorder: A dynamic causal modeling study.

We sought effective (directional) connectivity parameters associated with response to citalopram in cocaine use disorder (CUD) by conducting a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment with participants diagnosed with CUD (n = 13) and matched healthy controls (HC; n = 17). CUD participants showed a positive correlation between bilateral DLPFC-to-putamen effective connectivity and treatment effectiveness score. These preliminary results support further investigation of prefrontal-striatal interactions in response to treatment in CUD.

Adolescent alcohol use disrupts functional neurodevelopment in sensation seeking girls.

Exogenous causes, such as alcohol use, and endogenous factors, such as temperament and sex, can modulate developmental trajectories of adolescent neurofunctional maturation. We examined how these factors affect sexual dimorphism in brain functional networks in youth drinking below diagnostic threshold for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Based on the 3-year, annually acquired, longitudinal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of 526 adolescents (12-21 years at baseline) from the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) cohort, development

Naltrexone differentially modulates the neural correlates of motor impulse control in abstinent alcohol-dependent and polysubstance-dependent individuals.

Identifying key neural substrates in addiction disorders for targeted drug development remains a major challenge for clinical neuroscience. One emerging target is the opioid system, where substance-dependent populations demonstrate prefrontal opioid dysregulation that predicts impulsivity and relapse. This may suggest that disturbances to the prefrontal opioid system could confer a risk for relapse in addiction due to weakened 'top-down' control over impulsive behaviour. Naltrexone is currently licensed for alcohol dependence and is also used clinically for impulse control disorders. Using a g

Effect of a human serotonin 5-HT2A receptor gene polymorphism on impulsivity: Dependence on cholesterol levels.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is multidimensional: Low impulse control may result in behavioural disorders, but acting on the spur of moment may also be advantageous. Previous studies have shown negative associations between different facets of impulsivity and serotonergic function. Other investigations have found negative correlations between serum lipid levels and impulsivity. METHODS: We have investigated whether the functional polymorphism -1438A/G in the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor gene (HTR2A) is associated with impulsivity levels and whether there is any interaction with serum lipid levels. Classifying eating disorders based on "Работает" and "Требует внимания" perfectionism and impulsivity.

OBJECTIVE: Perfectionism and impulsivity are associated with eating disorders (EDs). The current study examines whether clinically relevant subgroups of women with EDs can be identified based on "Работает" and "Требует внимания" perfectionism and impulsivity. METHOD: Latent profile analyses (LPA) were performed on data of 844 patients (DSM-IV diagnosis: 381 anorexia nervosa, 146 bulimia nervosa, 56 binge-eating disorder, 261 ED not otherwise specified). "Healthy" and "Требует внимания" forms of perfectionism and impulsivity were assessed by the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and the Dickman Impu

Cognition and impulsivity in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with and without cocaine and/or crack dependence.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a common comorbidity in adults with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, there have been few studies on cognitive profiles of these patients. Impulsivity is also commonly increased in both disorders. The central aim of this study was to compare cognition and impulsivity in subjects who had ADHD and cocaine dependence (ADHD+COC group) to those with ADHD only (ADHD-noSUD group). We hypothesized that the ADHD+COC group would show more marked cognitive dysfunction and greater impulsivity than their counterparts with ADHD only. METHOD

Impulsivity in abstinent alcohol and polydrug dependence: a multidimensional approach.

RATIONALE: Dependence on drugs and alcohol is associated with impaired impulse control, but deficits are rarely compared across individuals dependent on different substances using several measures within a single study. OBJECTIVES: We investigated impulsivity in abstinent substance-dependent individuals (AbD) using three complementary techniques: self-report, neuropsychological and neuroimaging. We hypothesised that AbDs would show increased impulsivity across modalities, and that this would depend on length of abstinence. METHODS: Data were collected from the ICCAM study: 57 control and 86

Subjective illusion of control modulates striatal reward anticipation in adolescence.

The perception of control over the environment constitutes a fundamental biological adaptive mechanism, especially during development. Previous studies comparing an active choice condition with a passive no-choice condition showed that the neural basis of this mechanism is associated with increased activity within the striatum and the prefrontal cortex. In the current study, we aimed to investigate whether subjective belief of control in an uncertain gambling situation induces elevated activation in a cortico-striatal network. We investigated 79 adolescents (age range: 13-16years) during rewar

Profiles of substance use disorders in patients of therapeutic communities: link to social, medical and psychiatric characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic community (TC) clients frequently display a pattern of multiple substance use disorders (SUDs) which is associated with poorer treatment outcomes. This study aimed to characterize multiple SUD profiles in patients enrolled in TCs, and examine the association of these profiles with social, medical and psychiatric outcomes. METHODS: Observational study. We acquired substance use diagnoses and sociodemographic, medical and psychiatric comorbidity data for 4102 patients who had been admitted to six public TCs in Andalusia (Spain) from 2004 to 2012.
